Add client-signed energy device_command transport - #199
Adds a client-signed cloud transport for energy device commands (enabler E2 in the energy command gap analysis).
New tesla_fleet_api/tesla/energy_signing.py holds EnergyDeviceSigner. It wraps a MessageEnvelope in a RoutableMessage signed with RSA PKCS#1 v1.5 / SHA-512 over the TLV header (signature type, domain, gateway DIN, expires_at). It is the same scheme as aiopowerwall's /tedapi/v1r signer. The TTL is 30 s, the value that worked live through device_command on 2026-09-21.
EnergySite(parent, id, private_key=None, din=None) and EnergySites.create(..., private_key=, din=) are new constructor inputs. A key without a din raises ValueError. None means unsigned. Unlike vehicles, the site does not fall back to parent.rsa_private_key.
EnergySite._signed_command signs off the event loop and posts to POST api/1/energy_sites/{id}/device_command with {"data": {identifier_type: 1, routable_message, target_id}}. TeslemetryEnergySite._device_command posts the flat body, because the Teslemetry api adds the data wrapper itself.
Per-command signing rule
The site signs only commands that need a signature. Commands the gateway accepts unsigned stay unsigned, even when a key is given.
Method
With a key
Without a key
set_island_mode, go_off_grid, reconnect_grid (unsigned is acknowledged but does nothing)
signed
Fleet: SignedCommandRequired, as before. Teslemetry: server-signed api route
get_backup_events, get_teg_config (unsigned returned 400 on observed gateways)
signed
Fleet: unsigned, as before. Teslemetry: server-signed api route
every other device command, including dispatch_battery_power and the Teslemetry routes
With a key, TeslemetryEnergySite.set_island_mode, get_backup_events and get_teg_config call super(), which signs with that key and posts to Teslemetry's device_command route.
Without a key, they call the routes that api #888 added, where Teslemetry signs with its own key: POST command/set_island_mode with {mode, force}, GET command/backup_events and GET command/config. If Teslemetry's key is not verified on the gateway, those routes answer 409 energy_site_not_paired and send nothing.
go_off_grid now passes force=True, as aiopowerwall's local go_off_grid does. Before this PR the call always raised, so no existing caller sees a change.
EnergySiteRouter needed no code change. A test proves that a failed local primary falls over to a keyed cloud site, which sends the signed command on both backends.
Not in this PR
No new device commands. No version bump. No command was sent to any live site.
The device_command reply is returned unchanged and is not decoded. Its shape has not been captured live yet (gap analysis step E3).
docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md gets a new "Client-signed device commands" section. The island-mode warning in docs/energy_local_control.md, the SignedCommandRequired text and the AGENTS.md island-mode rule no longer say "always raises". They now say that a Fleet site raises without a signing key, and that a Teslemetry site without a key uses the server-signed route.
Tests
tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py uses a generated test RSA key, not a gateway key. The tests check:
the TLV bytes, written out byte by byte
signature verification, and rejection for a different DIN
expires_at, uuid, public key DER and envelope header
the Fleet and Teslemetry request bodies
the per-command routing table above
the Teslemetry super() path with a key, and the server-signed api routes without one
router failover to a signed cloud site
I ran pyright strict, ruff, and the energy-site, Teslemetry energy, router, parity and command-logging tests locally, and they passed. CI runs the full suite.
EnergySite and TeslemetryEnergySite take an optional RSA private_key and
gateway din. With a key, commands that need a signature (set_island_mode,
go_off_grid, reconnect_grid, and get_backup_events/get_teg_config, which
return 400 unsigned) are RSA-signed and sent through device_command; every
other command stays on the unsigned path. Without a key nothing changes.
TeslemetryEnergySite.set_island_mode calls super() when keyed, and goes to
a _server_signed_command hook otherwise; the hook raises
SignedCommandRequired until Teslemetry signs on its server.
Energy sites can accept an RSA private key and gateway DIN to sign selected commands for cloud transport. Fleet island-mode operations require signing credentials. Teslemetry supports signed command routing and server-signed routes. Tests cover signing, transport, and router fallback.
Adds RSA signing for energy-device messages, including DIN-personalized signatures, expiry, and message UUIDs. Tests verify message contents and reject non-RSA keys.
Fleet energy-site signed commands tesla_fleet_api/tesla/energysite.py, tesla_fleet_api/exceptions.py, AGENTS.md, docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md, tests/test_energysite_island_mode.py, tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py
Fleet sites accept a private key and DIN. Selected reads use signed commands when configured; island-mode operations require signing credentials. Other commands retain unsigned routing.
Teslemetry routing and router fallback tesla_fleet_api/teslemetry/energysite.py, docs/energy_local_control.md, tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py
Teslemetry sites use signed commands when configured and Teslemetry routes when no client key is supplied. Tests cover cloud fallback after a local connection failure.

Per the captain's rule on #198: a TeslemetryEnergySite signs locally only
when it has an RSA key. Without one, set_island_mode, get_backup_events and
get_teg_config call the routes api #888 added (POST command/set_island_mode,
GET command/backup_events, GET command/config), which Teslemetry signs with
its own key. This replaces the hook that raised SignedCommandRequired.
Point to the routing implementations instead of restating them.
The new per-backend routing description duplicates behavior in tesla_fleet_api/tesla/energysite.py and tesla_fleet_api/teslemetry/energysite.py. Keep the contactor safety warning, but replace the routing description with pointers to those methods so this guidance does not become stale. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
