Summary

A live check on the captain's Powerwall 3 (2026-10-29) showed that Tesla's cloud answers HTTP 400 (powergate ... Error sending command) to the unsigned grpc_command for every energy device command except four pre-pairing reads: get_system_info, get_networking_status, get_signed_commands_public_key and list_authorized_clients. The same commands sent signed through device_command all reached the gateway. Signed dispatch_battery_power moved the battery from -7.3 kW to -2.4 kW, signed resume returned it, and signed schedule_backup_event/cancel_backup_event added and removed the event.

#199's signing table was the reverse of this (sign only island mode and two reads). This PR fixes it:

  • EnergySite._command is now the one routing point. If the site has a signing key, it signs every device command except the four in UNSIGNED_DEVICE_COMMANDS. Without a key it sends the unsigned grpc_command as before (Tesla refuses most of them, as before). set_island_mode/go_off_grid/reconnect_grid still raise SignedCommandRequired without a key.
  • TeslemetryEnergySite: with a key, dispatch_battery_power, resume_battery_operation and remove_authorized_client call super() and sign. add_authorized_client signs when a public_key is given; with no public_key it still calls Teslemetry's route, which registers Teslemetry's own key. Without a key, all of these keep their Teslemetry routes. get_networking_status/list_authorized_clients stay on their routes.
  • Signed add_authorized_client sends the client type as type, the proto field name. The unsigned JSON body keeps authorized_client_type unchanged.
  • Fleet REST routes (backup, storm_mode, operation, grid_import_export, ...) are not device commands and do not change.
  • Docs: signing table in docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md and the dispatch section of docs/teslemetry.md.

No version bump.

Coordination with #198

That draft edits the same files. It adds if self._signer branches to four Fleet reads; after this PR those branches are redundant but harmless, because _command already signs. Its test test_teslemetry_routes_stay_unsigned_with_a_key expects keyed dispatch_battery_power on the Teslemetry route; that expectation is now wrong and must change to "signed" on rebase.

Risks

  • Signed add_authorized_client/remove_authorized_client were not tested live (the live check did not touch authorization writes). With a key they now sign, by the "sign everything but the four" rule.
  • Teslemetry's dispatch_battery_power, resume_battery_operation and backup-event routes still send unsigned and get Tesla's 400 until the Teslemetry api moves them to server signing. A keyless Teslemetry site cannot dispatch until then.
  • set_local_site_config_request has no fields in the proto, so a keyed site rejects any params for it locally before sending (json_format.ParseError).

Tests

tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py now checks every device command: signed with a key on both backends, unsigned without one on Fleet, the four pre-pairing reads unsigned with a key, the dispatch/resume payloads, the signed add_authorized_client field names, and the keyless Teslemetry routes. Ran the energy-site, router, command-logging and Teslemetry authorized-client/pairing test files: 174 passed. pyright strict and ruff check pass.

A live check on a Powerwall 3 (2026-10-29) showed Tesla's cloud answers
HTTP 400 to every unsigned grpc_command except get_system_info,
get_networking_status, get_signed_commands_public_key and
list_authorized_clients. Signed through device_command, every command
tested reached the gateway: dispatch_battery_power moved the battery,
resume released it, and backup event schedule/cancel took effect.

EnergySite._command now signs every device command except those four
when the site has a key, and sends unsigned otherwise (as before).
TeslemetryEnergySite signs dispatch_battery_power,
resume_battery_operation and add/remove_authorized_client with a key,
and keeps its routes without one. The signed add_authorized_client
uses the proto field name "type" for the client type.

Walkthrough

Keyed Energy Sites now sign device commands except four pre-pairing reads. Teslemetry methods delegate eligible commands to the shared signed transport and retain existing Teslemetry routes in other cases. Tests and documentation describe the signing behavior and routing conditions.

TeslemetryEnergySite inherited the Fleet API grpc_command body for 12 energy
device commands, which Teslemetry rejects with 400. Without a signing key,
each now calls its dedicated Teslemetry route and never the generic command
route.

With a signing key, the commands that #201 signs go through super() and
Teslemetry's device_command route. The pre-pairing reads get_system_info,
raw_networking_status and get_signed_commands_public_key always use their
route.
