Correct AGENTS.md from recent session history - #216
This PR corrects AGENTS.md using the worker session records for this repository from 2026-10-04 to 2026-11-03 (41 sessions). Every remaining entry was checked against the code on main at 4263c99. Each path, symbol and test it names still exists. No code changes.
Removed
uv run ruff format tesla_fleet_api in Development Commands. CI runs no format check, and the tree is not format-clean (8 package files and 9 test files would be reformatted on main). In two sessions, running that exact command rewrote 3 to 4 unrelated files (for example router/energysite.py, teslemetry/const.py, teslemetry/vehicle.py), and those files then had to be put back. A short note replaces the command.
"commit on main" in Release. No release was committed on main: all 8 release sessions opened a Bump version to X.Y.Z PR that changed only pyproject.toml, tesla_fleet_api/__init__.py and uv.lock, then tagged the merge commit.
The "Captain directive:" label on the proto coverage rule. It names a person, not a fact about the code.
Corrected
Lint command: now uv run ruff check tesla_fleet_api tests, which is what ci.yml and release.yml run. The old line linted only the package.
Format note (new, replaces the removed command): run ruff format only on the files you change. 15 sessions got Would reformat output from ruff format --check. At least three of them had to prove the flagged lines were already on main, not their own (one compared every changed file's formatting at HEAD and after).
Release: now says to merge a bump PR that changes only those three files and to tag its merge commit, and points to the release skill for the steps. Evidence: the 8 release sessions above. Because AGENTS.md said to commit on main, four of those tasks had to spell out "copy the previous bump PR exactly".
tesla-protocol pin: "bump the floor" is now "bump the floor and major cap together (>=X.Y.Z,<X+1)". Two sessions: the uncapped >=5.0.0 floor let tesla-protocol 6.0.0 install, and transport_pb2.LOCAL_PARTICIPANT_INSTALLER raised AttributeError (fixed by adding the cap). The 6.1.0 move then had to adapt renamed fields (uiDesire, sheduling_info, LocalParticipant).
aiopowerwall dependency rule: it said EnergySiteRouter uses a local structural Protocol. That is not true on main: EnergySiteRouter is generic over PrimaryT/SecondaryT, and the only such Protocol is StreamSink in stream_glue.py. The Powerwall LAN client now lives in tesla/powerwall/ (moved in #205). The rule now says that.
Proto coverage lock: "keep it in sync instead of special-casing new fields" now says to wrap each new field, allowlist one only with a written reason in a reasoned set, and never special-case it in the test logic. That matches the test's docstring and the tesla-protocol-bump skill. One bump session read the old wording as conflicting with the skill, allowlisted three new fields, and had to ask which was meant.
Added
TeslemetryEnergySite without a signing key calls only dedicated Teslemetry api routes, never the generic command route. A missing route is added to the api first. Three sessions: one PR shipped keyless commands on the generic route and was rejected in review ("add these to the api first rather than shipping this incomplete"). A second PR had keyless island mode and two reads sending their own unsigned gRPC message and had to be reworked onto the api routes. A third fixed docs that said keyless dispatch works.
Never route operation, backup and grid_import_export for one site to different backends, because all three write the gateway config.json. This rule was in aiopowerwall's AGENTS.md. The approved merge plan listed it as one to carry over. The move (#205) brought the code in but not the rule, and it now appears nowhere in this repository. The other aiopowerwall rules were not carried over: the code docstrings already cover them (site_info absent, full gateway password, _send_command_request reuse), or they are stale since tesla-protocol 6.0.0 (the sheduling_info spelling).
Not changed
CLAUDE.md (the @AGENTS.md pointer is correct). The BLE, router, funnel and cross-transport rules were verified against main and kept. No session gave evidence that any of them is wrong or unused.

- Line 34: Clarify the release instructions around the release skill: state that
version bumps and tag creation are manual, while publication is automated by the
tag-triggered release.yml workflow.
- Line 109: Qualify the keyed-operation rule in the AGENTS.md sentence so it
applies to signed device commands, not every keyed operation; preserve the
dedicated-route exceptions for TeslemetryEnergySite.get_system_info() and
raw_networking_status().
Walkthrough
AGENTS.md updates development guidance for linting, formatting, releases, protobuf upgrades, proto coverage, local dependencies, and Teslemetry EnergySite routing.
Changes: Development guidance
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Lint and release workflow AGENTS.md
Lint instructions now include both the library and tests. Release instructions specify the three version-bump files and require the tag to target the merge commit.
Dependency and proto guidance AGENTS.md
Protobuf guidance specifies updating the minimum version and major cap together. The instructions also describe the local Powerwall and BLE stream implementations and require written reasons for proto-field allowlists.
EnergySite routing rules AGENTS.md
Keyless TeslemetryEnergySite instructions prohibit generic-command fallback. Signed operations use device_command, and operation, backup, and grid_import_export must use the same backend.
Teslemetry/python-tesla-fleet-api#199: Adds signed device_command handling and keyless Teslemetry command routes, which are covered by the updated routing guidance.
Teslemetry/python-tesla-fleet-api#198: Adds a generic Teslemetry energy-site command route, which the updated instructions distinguish from keyless dedicated routes.
The PR changes development guidance only, but two inaccurate instructions could mislead release execution or future Teslemetry routing changes.

Clarify the release automation scope.
release.yml is a tag-triggered automated publisher. The statement “No release automation” conflicts with the workflow described below. State that version bump and tag creation are manual, while publication is automated by release.yml.

Document the pre-pairing-read exception.
The sentence says that every keyed operation uses device_command. TeslemetryEnergySite.get_system_info() and raw_networking_status() use dedicated routes even when a signer exists. Qualify this rule for signed device commands.
