Raise on a gateway error_response in signed energy device replies - #202
Decode signed energy replies.EnergySite._signed_command now parses message_envelope_as_bytes as a MessageEnvelope. If it holds common.error_response, the call raises instead of returning success:
code 12 (UNIMPLEMENTED) raises InvalidCommand;
any other code raises DeviceUnexpectedResponse;
both carry {"code", "message"} as data.
A reply without decodable envelope bytes is returned unchanged, as before. This covers the Fleet and Teslemetry signed paths (Teslemetry overrides only _device_command).
Correct the dispatch docs (dispatch_battery_power docstring and docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md). The old sentence "the gateway still applies its own reserve and grid limits" is replaced with what was observed: a setpoint discharged below the backup reserve and exported with export set to pv_only/never (Powerwall 2, Backup Gateway 1, firmware 26.34.0, one third-party run). The gateway refuses (does not clamp) a request above its power limit, seen at 10,000 W, with code 11 (OUT_OF_RANGE).
Simpler power check.validate_dispatch_battery_power checks power with math.isfinite alone. The bool/isinstance checks are gone, so True passes as 1 W, a str or None raises TypeError, and an int too large for a float raises OverflowError. This library has no input schema or typed request model for dispatch_battery_power, so the check stays in the helper.
Why
A refused dispatch (for example power 11000.000000 exceeds discharge limit 10000) comes back from Tesla as HTTP 200 with the gateway's error inside the envelope bytes, so the library reported it as success. Evidence: the pypowerwall PR jasonacox/pypowerwall#440 hardware logs. The reply shape ({"response": {"request_id", "message_envelope_as_bytes"}}) and the ack bytes KgOyAgA= come from our live signed dispatch on 2026-10-29.
Notes for review
error_response is outside CommonMessages' message oneof, so the check uses HasField, not WhichOneof.
Neither new raise is failover-safe, so EnergySiteRouter does not retry a refused command on another backend.
Behaviour change: a caller-supplied verify_by_use in wait_until_paired that issues a signed command the gateway answers with an error now fails and keeps polling. Before, it counted as proof.
No hardware test was run. Code 11 on the signed cloud path has not been seen live; the test uses the reply shape we captured plus the code-11 message from PR 440.
Tests
tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py, tests/test_energysite_battery_dispatch.py, tests/test_teslemetry_energy_commands.py: 44 passed (121 subtests). Added: code-11 reply raises on Fleet and Teslemetry, code 12 raises InvalidCommand, and the live ack is returned unchanged. Dropped the True, "5000" and None power cases from the invalid-argument test, because the power check no longer raises ValueError on them. pyright strict and ruff check are clean.
A signed device_command that the gateway refuses (for example code 11
OUT_OF_RANGE on a dispatch above its 10,000 W limit) comes back as HTTP 200
with common.error_response in message_envelope_as_bytes, and was reported as
success. Decode the reply in _signed_command: code 12 (UNIMPLEMENTED) raises
InvalidCommand, any other code raises DeviceUnexpectedResponse, both with
{code, message} as data.
Correct the dispatch docs: a setpoint was seen to discharge below the backup
reserve and to export regardless of the export setting, and the gateway
refuses rather than clamps a request above its power limit.
Make validate_dispatch_battery_power raise ValueError, not OverflowError, on
an int too large for a float.

Walkthrough
Signed energy-site commands now decode response envelopes and raise command exceptions for gateway errors. Battery power validation also rejects extremely large integers through its existing ValueError path. Documentation and tests cover gateway refusal codes, acknowledgements, and dispatch behavior.

Summary
Dispatch validation and behavior tesla_fleet_api/tesla/energysite.py, tests/test_energysite_battery_dispatch.py, docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md
Dispatch power validation treats overflow during finiteness checks as invalid input. Tests include an extremely large integer. The documentation records observed reserve, export, and gateway power-limit behavior.
Signed reply error handling tesla_fleet_api/tesla/energysite.py, tests/test_energysite_signed_transport.py, docs/fleet_api_energy_sites.md
Signed-command replies are inspected for gateway error responses. Code 12 raises InvalidCommand; other codes raise DeviceUnexpectedResponse. Both exceptions include the response code and message in data. Tests also check that an acknowledgement is returned unchanged.
Malformed signed replies can raise after a command is sent; handling them unchanged would preserve the documented behavior.

Return non-object replies unchanged.
TeslaFleetApi._request permits JSON null, lists, and scalars. If device_command returns one, this .get() raises AttributeError after the command was sent. Check that result is a dictionary before reading it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Handle non-ASCII envelope strings.
If message_envelope_as_bytes contains non-ASCII text, base64.b64decode raises ValueError, which this handler does not catch. The signed command then fails instead of returning the undecodable reply unchanged. Catch ValueError here as well. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

No input schema exists for dispatch_battery_power, so keep the single
isfinite check in the helper and drop the bool/isinstance chain, the
OverflowError catch and their test cases.
