Give task sizes the run-time lookup function annotations have - #7926
Depends on #7925. This PR is based on its branch and shows only its own commit; it will be retargeted to master once #7925 is merged.
get_task_size<F, Size> only knew the size from the type of F, so a function stored in an hpx::function or an hpx::move_only_function, or passed to hpx::thread or run_as_hpx_thread, lost its size. The trait now also has call(f), which returns the size of the function object f, the same way get_function_annotation::call(f) does for annotations:
The vtable of type erased functions gets a get_task_size entry, and hpx::function and hpx::move_only_function answer from it.
bind, bind_front, bind_back, deferred_call, one_shot, annotated_function, the dataflow finalization and the iteration wrappers of the algorithms forward call to the function they wrap.
set_task_size takes the function object and uses call, so every spawn path that uses it sees the run-time size. hpx::thread and run_as_hpx_thread now set the size of their threads as well.
with_task_size_of gives a function the size of another one, which may be known at run time only. Hierarchical spawning uses it for its per-element tasks.
The executors manual describes call and shows how a wrapper of your own forwards it. The sized_function and task_size_hint tests check type erased functions, hpx::thread and run_as_hpx_thread.

Runtime task-size information is now available for type-erased functions and is preserved through callable wrappers.
Threads and executor bulk operations use available task-size information when scheduling work.
Parallel algorithm tasks reflect the work assigned per chunk; tasks with unsized loop bodies retain an unknown size.
Documentation
Clarified runtime task-size lookup and how task sizes are assigned across threads, executor bulk operations, and parallel algorithm chunks.
This change adds runtime task-size queries for callable objects and propagates task sizes through wrappers, thread creation, futures, bulk executors, and parallel algorithm workers. Partitioners calculate iterations per chunk and combine that count with the loop body's task size. Tests and executor documentation cover these paths.
Changes: Task-size lookup and propagation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Runtime task-size queries for callable objects libs/core/functional/..., libs/core/threading_base/include/hpx/threading_base/sized_function.hpp, libs/core/executors/include/hpx/executors/dataflow.hpp, libs/core/threading_base/tests/unit/sized_function.cpp
The task-size trait adds a runtime call query. Callable wrappers and type-erased functions expose or forward task sizes. size_of_function stores a runtime size, and tests cover erased functions and wrappers.
Task-size propagation into scheduled and bulk tasks libs/core/execution/include/hpx/execution/detail/post_policy_dispatch.hpp, libs/core/futures/include/hpx/futures/*, libs/core/runtime_local/include/hpx/runtime_local/run_as_hpx_thread.hpp, libs/core/threading/src/thread.cpp, libs/core/executors/include/hpx/executors/*, libs/core/threading_base/tests/unit/task_size_hint.cpp
Task creation paths query callable task sizes when setting scheduling hints. Bulk worker-task traits derive sizes from the work assigned per worker. Tests cover thread, executor, and type-erased callable paths.
Chunk-based task sizes in parallel algorithms libs/core/algorithms/include/hpx/parallel/algorithms/*, libs/core/algorithms/include/hpx/parallel/util/*, libs/core/threading_base/tests/unit/task_size_hint.cpp, docs/sphinx/manual/executors.rst
Partitioners pass iterations per chunk to worker functions. reduce, transform_reduce, and merge wrap partition work with the relevant callable's task size. Tests and documentation describe the resulting task-size propagation.
Existing task-size specializations can stop compiling when used with threads or wrappers. Restore compatibility before merging.

Explanation
The title "Give task sizes the run-time lookup function annotations have" matches the main change. The PR adds get_task_size<F, Size>::call(f), which reads a task size from a function object at run time, in the same way get_function_annotation does for annotations. The objectives state the same aim. The title is a single sentence and does not list files. It is slightly abstract, since it does not name hpx::function or type-erased wrappers, but it still identifies the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the problem: get_task_size<F, Size> reads the size only from the type of F, so functions stored in hpx::function, hpx::move_only_function, hpx::thread, or run_as_hpx_thread lose their size. It then lists the changes: the new call(f) trait, a vtable entry for type-erased functions, forwarding through bind and related wrappers, set_task_size taking the function object, and with_task_size_of. It also names the manual and test updates. The description matches the changeset in detail.

get_task_size<F, Size> only knew the size from the type of F, so a function
stored in an hpx::function or hpx::move_only_function, or passed to
hpx::thread or run_as_hpx_thread, lost its size. The trait now also has
call(f), which returns the size of the function object f, like
get_function_annotation<F>::call(f) does for annotations:
- the vtable of type erased functions gets a get_task_size entry, and
hpx::function and hpx::move_only_function answer from it
- bind, bind_front, bind_back, deferred_call, one_shot, annotated_function,
the dataflow finalization and the iteration wrappers of the algorithms
forward call to the function they wrap
- set_task_size takes the function object and uses call, so every spawn
path that used it sees the run-time size; hpx::thread and
run_as_hpx_thread now set the size of their threads as well
- with_task_size_of gives a function the size of another one, which may be
known at run time only; hierarchical spawning uses it for its per-element
tasks
The executors manual describes call and shows how a custom wrapper forwards
it. sized_function and task_size_hint check type erased functions,
hpx::thread and run_as_hpx_thread.

The worker tasks of the bulk operations of parallel_executor (which
scheduler_executor uses as well) and of the bulk sender of
thread_pool_scheduler run their share of the elements of the shape,
each a call of the bulk function, so their size is derived from the
function's size with hpx::bulk_task_size.
The parallel algorithms call the function they give to the executor
once per chunk of loop iterations. The partitioners now store the
number of iterations per chunk in that function, partitioner_iteration,
whose size is derived from the size of the loop body.
A function without a size still gives tasks without a size.
task_size_hint expects the new sizes, and the docs describe them.
Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>
sized_function and size_of_function accepted any arguments, so a caller
that detects which arguments a function takes chose the wrong call for a
wrapped function: partitioner_iteration checks whether the function takes
an index pack and a tuple. The call operators now require the wrapped
function to be invocable with the arguments.
Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>
The worker tasks of the parallel algorithms get the size of the function
the partitioner runs for each chunk. reduce, transform_reduce and merge
pass their own lambdas, which had no size, so their worker tasks had none
even for a sized operation. The lambdas now have the size of the reduction
(reduce), of the transformation (transform_reduce) or of the comparison
(merge). transform_reduce of two ranges copies the transformation into its
lambda instead of moving it, so that its size can still be read.
task_size_hint checks the sizes of the worker tasks of these algorithms.

get_bulk_iteration_shape_variable consumes the count it is given, so the
iterations per chunk computed from it afterwards were always 0, and the
worker tasks of a sized function got the size nano for executor
parameters with variable chunk sizes (for instance guided_chunk_size).
The partitioner now keeps the total before generating the shape.
task_size_hint checks this for reduce with guided_chunk_size.

@hkaiser Thanks for doing this, the run-time lookup fits nicely with how annotations already work. I built it (GCC 16, Debug, thread descriptions off) and ran all threading_base and executors tests, the 7887 regression test (5x), and the reduce, transform_reduce, merge, for_loop, foreach and transform tests, all pass. It also merges cleanly with master.
A few small things I noticed, none of them blocking:
merge: the partitioner gets the length of the longer range as the count, but each call merges elements from both ranges, so the count can be 1x to 2x too low. Usually the class stays the same (4 worker threads, 10k + 10k with a small comp: 625 vs 1250 per call, medium either way), but it can flip near a boundary: 100k + 100k gives 6250 vs 12500, so medium instead of large.
size_of_function doesn't forward get_function_address / get_function_annotation / get_function_annotation_tracing like sized_function does. Nothing is lost today since all users wrap plain lambdas, just mentioning it in case it's used more widely later.
function_ref has a get_function_annotation specialization but no get_task_size one. It isn't used on any spawn path, so only for consistency.
The comment in thread_pool_scheduler_bulk.hpp says a bulk_chunked function's size counts per element. It might help to say that in executors.rst too, since someone could otherwise give the size of a whole chunk.
The bulk/algorithm tests mostly use large functions, and bulk_task_size(large, n) is always large, so a count that's too low wouldn't make them fail (the guided reduce with a medium function wouldn't catch it either). A nano or small body over enough elements might.
Also, not from this PR but in get_task_size.hpp: line 78 casts to decltype(max_calls), which is const, so GCC gives -Wignored-qualifiers in every file that includes it. And the comment "small up to about 100 ns" seems to read the opposite of bulk_task_size, which treats 100 ns as the lower bound of small.
- size_of_function forwards the address and the annotations of the
function it wraps, as sized_function does.
- Document that the size of a bulk_chunked function is the size of its
work for one element, not for the range passed to a call.
- Test a reduction of a nano function with 100 iterations per chunk,
whose task size changes if the iterations per chunk are counted wrong.
- bulk_task_size casts the number of calls to the representation of
std::chrono::nanoseconds instead of the const type of max_calls, which
gave -Wignored-qualifiers with gcc.
- A small task stands for about 100 ns, the lower bound used by
bulk_task_size, not for up to 100 ns.

@v4xsh thanks again! 03ee2f6 addresses 2, 4 and 5 and both notes on get_task_size.hpp (the cast now uses std::chrono::nanoseconds::rep, and small stands for about 100 ns, as bulk_task_size uses it). The new test reduces a nano function with 100 iterations per chunk on one worker: the task is medium, while a wrong number of iterations per chunk makes it small or large (checked by breaking the count in the partitioner both ways).
I left out 3: without thread descriptions function_ref stores just a function pointer, so a task size would need a vtable in every build (or work only in builds with thread descriptions), and function_ref isn't used to spawn tasks.
A user-defined specialization that provides only the previously supported value member can now fail to compile when its wrapper is submitted through set_task_size: the new implementation calls traits::get_task_size<F>::call(f), but explicit specializations do not inherit members added to the primary template. Use a compatibility accessor that calls call when available and otherwise returns get_task_size_v<F>. Apply it to all new object-based lookup paths, including set_task_size and with_task_size_of.

Use the combined merge length for task-size estimation.
foreach_partitioner derives partitioner_iteration::iterations_ from max(len1, len2), but the merge reshape gives each worker a diagonal chunk from len1 + len2 output positions. For equal non-empty ranges with a static chunk size of 60, a nano-sized comparator can be classified as a nano task instead of a small task. Keep the input count for iterator partitioning, but pass a separate len1 + len2 task count to iterations_per_chunk.

Use a compatibility helper for every runtime task-size lookup.
163-173: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Use a compatibility helper for every runtime task-size lookup.
A fallback only in set_task_size does not preserve value-only get_task_size specializations. The erased callable vtable, with_task_size_of, and the bind, deferred-call, and one-shot wrappers call traits::get_task_size<...>::call(...) directly. A value-only specialization can therefore still fail to compile.
The requires expression is compatible with HPX's required C++20 standard. Apply it in a shared helper and use that helper at every runtime lookup site.
