This adds hpx::execution::experimental::task_size_chunk_size, executor parameters that divide loop iterations into chunks based on the task size of the loop body (see hpx::task_size) instead of measuring an iteration. The run time a size stands for (hpx::task_size_duration) is taken as the run time of one iteration. A loop runs on as many cores as can be given chunks_per_core chunks of at least min_chunk_time each, at least on one, and on the calling thread if it is only one chunk. A loop body without a size is chunked as with the default parameters.
The defaults (2.5 us as the minimal run time of a chunk and 8 chunks per core) are compiled into hpx_core and can be changed at startup with the configuration entries hpx.task_size_chunk_size.min_chunk_time_us and hpx.task_size_chunk_size.chunks_per_core (or HPX_TASK_SIZE_CHUNK_SIZE_MIN_CHUNK_TIME_US and HPX_TASK_SIZE_CHUNK_SIZE_CHUNKS_PER_CORE).
The new task_size_chunk_size_sweep runs hpx::for_each with nano, small and medium loop bodies over 1 us to 10 ms of work for 28 pairs of the two parameters and compares them to the default parameters. It prints the pair closest to the best parameters of each case as configuration entries, for tuning a machine. Four rounds at 4, 8, 16 and 32 cores put 2.5 us and 8 chunks per core first overall (1.051 of the best of each case), so these are the defaults.
foreach_report and stream_report get entries that use task_size_chunk_size (named with a _task_size suffix), and stream implements its --chunker option as default or task_size.
The new configure option HPX_WITH_TASK_SIZE_DEFAULT_PARAMETERS (OFF by default) derives default_parameters from task_size_chunk_size, so that par and the executors without parameters of their own chunk a loop whose body has a task size based on it, while loops without a size are chunked as before. For this, a default-constructed task_size_chunk_size reads its defaults when a loop is chunked instead of when it is created, so that the global execution policies use the configured values. The option is turned on for the Linux debug, Windows release and macOS debug GitHub Actions builds and for the gcc 14 builders on rostam.
Copy and other algorithms without a function have no task size yet, so task_size_chunk_size chunks them as by default.

Added task-size-based chunking for parallel loops. Task-size hints help estimate iteration work and select chunk sizes without measuring each iteration.
Added configurable minimum chunk time and chunks per core, with defaults of 2.5 microseconds and 8 chunks per core. Per-loop settings can override these defaults.
Added an option to use task-size-based chunking for default parameters; it is disabled by default.
Added task-size chunking options to the STREAM performance benchmarks and a benchmark for comparing chunk-size settings.

task_size_chunk_size divides loop iterations into chunks based on the task
size of the loop body instead of measuring an iteration: the run time a
size stands for (task_size_duration) is taken as the run time of one
iteration. A loop runs on as many cores as can be given chunks_per_core
chunks of at least min_chunk_time each (4 chunks of 5 microseconds by
default), and on the calling thread if it is only one chunk. A loop body
without a size is chunked as with the default parameters.

The defaults of task_size_chunk_size (a minimal run time of a chunk of
5 us and 4 chunks per core) are compiled into hpx_core instead of being
written in its header, so that changing them recompiles one source file.
The runtime replaces them at startup with the configuration entries
hpx.task_size_chunk_size.min_chunk_time_us and
hpx.task_size_chunk_size.chunks_per_core, which are empty by default and
can also be set with HPX_TASK_SIZE_CHUNK_SIZE_MIN_CHUNK_TIME_US and
HPX_TASK_SIZE_CHUNK_SIZE_CHUNKS_PER_CORE. A chunks_per_core of 0 given
to the constructor stands for the default.
Test the configuration entries, and transform_reduce and reduce with
task_size_chunk_size running in several chunks.
Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>
task_size_chunk_size_sweep runs hpx::for_each with nano, small and
medium loop bodies over 1 us to 10 ms of work for 28 pairs of minimal
chunk time and chunks per core, and compares them to the default
parameters. It prints a summary and, as configuration entries, the pair
closest to the best parameters of each case, for tuning a machine. As a
test it runs only loops of up to 100 us, each once.
Four rounds at 4, 8, 16 and 32 cores put 2.5 us and 8 chunks per core
first overall (1.051 of the best of each case, 5 us and 4 chunks per
core 1.071), first at 8 and 16 cores and within 1% at 32 cores, so these
become the defaults. More chunks per core leave chunks to steal towards
the end of a loop.

foreach_report runs the for_each loop of three executors again with
task_size_chunk_size, the loop body given the task size closest to
--work_delay. stream_report runs its three executors again with
task_size_chunk_size and nano-sized kernels, and stream implements its
--chunker option, which it printed but didn't use, as default or
task_size. Copy has no function, so task_size_chunk_size chunks it as by
default.

With this configure option, default_parameters is derived from

whose body has no size are chunked as before. The option is OFF by
default.

Forward the task size through the for_each_index wrappers.
When a parallel for_each_index call uses task_size_chunk_size, the partitioner measures for_each_index_iteration_left or for_each_index_iteration_right, not the annotated body stored in fun_. The wrapper reports unknown, so the policy falls back to default chunking and does not apply the body's task-size-based partitioning.
Add forwarding traits for both wrappers, matching the existing for_each_iteration forwarding pattern.

Preserve the generator task size before capturing it.
When generate or generate_n receives a sized generator, the partitioner receives f1, whose lambda type has no task-size specialization. task_size_chunk_size therefore uses default chunking instead of the configured generator size. Query the size before forwarding f, then wrap f1 with size_of_function.

Forward the predicate's task size through count_iteration.
count_if passes its predicate inside count_iteration to the general partitioner. count_iteration has no get_task_size specialization. A predicate annotated with hpx::task_size therefore reports unknown. task_size_chunk_size then returns null_duration and uses default chunking, so the annotation has no effect on count_if.
Other wrappers in this code already forward their size. for_each_iteration in for_each.hpp and part_iterations in for_loop.hpp both do this. Add the same forwarding for count_iteration. Place the specialization at namespace scope after the count_iteration definition in count.hpp:
count(value) uses compare_to as its operation. That type has no task size, so its behavior does not change.

@coderabbitai the three outside-diff findings (for_each_index_iteration_left/right, the generator wrapper in generate/generate_n, and count_iteration) are about algorithms whose wrappers don't pass the task size of the user's function on yet. They are handled by #7947, which sizes those wrappers (for_each_index with the size of the body times the number of calls per iteration, generate/generate_n with the size of the generator, count/count_if with the size of the predicate) and tests them in task_sizes_predicates.cpp. Until it is merged, task_size_chunk_size chunks these algorithms as by default, as the PR description says for algorithms without a sized function, so nothing changes here.
@hkaiser You're right. I withdraw the three outside-diff findings as objections to this PR.
The inspected code confirms the intended fallback: an unknown task size produces null_duration, preserves the available processing-unit count, and returns a chunk size of 0 to select default chunking. Missing task-size propagation in those wrappers does not establish a regression here.
The wrapper changes belong in #7947, as you explained. I did not find task_sizes_predicates.cpp on this branch, so I have not verified that PR's tests.

… in the sweep
A configured hpx.task_size_chunk_size.chunks_per_core of 0 gave one chunk per core, it is now ignored like the other values out of range. The sweep takes the mean of the two middle samples for an even number of repetitions.
Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>
@coderabbitai Both fixed in 2355644. A configured chunks_per_core of 0 is now ignored like the other out-of-range values, so the compiled default is used; the documentation gives the range as 1 to 1024, and task_size_chunk_size_configuration.cpp tests it. The sweep now takes the mean of the two middle samples for an even number of repetitions.
@hkaiser Thanks. Source inspection confirms both fixes in 2355644868:
Configured chunks_per_core=0 now selects the compiled default. The documentation specifies 1–1024, and the configuration test checks the zero-value fallback.
For an even sample count, the sweep now averages the two middle samples.
Both concerns are addressed. I did not run the tests.
