Add hpx::threads::task_size and with_task_size (step 1 of #7837) - #7848
Add hpx::threads::task_size (unknown, small_, medium, large) in thread_enums.hpp, next to thread_stacksize and thread_priority.
Add hpx::traits::get_task_size<F, Size = task_size::unknown> and get_task_size_v (in threading_base). Size is what is reported when F carries no size.
Add hpx::threads::with_task_size<Size>(f) / sized_function and the shorthands small_task, medium_task, large_task. The size is a template argument, so the wrapper adds no storage; serialization is generated for it.
get_task_size sees through annotated_function, deferred_call, bind, bind_front, bind_back, one_shot and dataflow; the name traits see through sized_function.
The size travels in thread_schedule_hint (2 bits, next to the mode, now also 2 bits); the hint stays 4 bytes. hpx::post, hpx::async, executors, .then() and dataflow put the function's size into the hint; a function without a size keeps the size of the caller's launch policy.
Add unit tests, including one that checks the size arrives at the scheduler's create_thread.
Any background context you want to provide?
This is step 1 of #7837 only: no scheduler changes and no executor property; nothing reads the size yet.
thread_schedule_hint::mode is now accessed through mode() / mode(x) like the other parts of the hint; code that used the mode member directly needs updating (all uses in HPX are updated).
Launch policy serialization writes one more byte (the size).
small_ has an underscore because small is a macro on Windows, as with thread_stacksize::small_.
Not covered yet: .then() with an executor (drops the size, as it drops the description), bulk execution and parallel algorithms (chunk wrappers), type-erased functions, and actions.
thread_data doesn't keep the hint; storing the size there needs one byte, which fits in existing padding.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added helpers to label callables as small, medium, or large tasks.
Scheduling hints now support task sizes, which are carried through asynchronous launches, executors, continuations, and dataflow operations.
Bug Fixes
Task-size hints now follow consistent precedence: callable hints override launch-policy hints, while executor hints override callable hints when specified.
Tests
Added coverage for task-size annotations, scheduling hints, propagation across execution paths, and serialization.
The change adds task-size metadata to callable types and scheduling hints. Execution paths propagate task sizes to scheduled threads. Scheduling-hint serialization and mode access are updated, and unit tests cover the metadata and its propagation.
Adds task-size values and storage to thread_schedule_hint, a get_task_size trait, and callable wrappers for explicit small, medium, or large task sizes. Adds trait forwarding for wrapped, annotated, and dataflow callables.
Task-size propagation and validation libs/core/execution/include/hpx/execution/detail/{future_exec,post_policy_dispatch}.hpp, libs/core/executors/include/hpx/executors/parallel_executor.hpp, libs/core/futures/include/hpx/futures/{futures_factory,packaged_continuation}.hpp, libs/core/threading_base/tests/unit/{CMakeLists.txt,sized_function.cpp,task_size_hint.cpp}
Sets task-size hints during policy dispatch and future scheduling. Passes task size through spawner calls and executor dispatch. Adds tests for wrapper behavior, task-size propagation, and policy-versus-callable task sizes.
Hint serialization and mode access libs/core/async_base/{src/launch_policy.cpp,tests/unit/launch_policy.cpp}, libs/core/executors/include/hpx/executors/{detail/index_queue_spawning_*,thread_pool_scheduler_bulk.hpp}, libs/core/executors/tests/unit/parallel_executor_parameters.cpp, libs/core/futures/src/detail/execute_thread.cpp, libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/*, libs/core/threading_base/src/*
Serializes the scheduling-hint mode and task size. Replaces direct mode-field access with getters and setters in executor, scheduler, and thread-state code. Updates launch-policy tests for task-size preservation and hint accessors.

The size should be stored in the launch-policy. That will require making room in the thread_schedule_hint type (which currently occupies exactly 4 bytes and should not grow larger). There is however the possibility to squeeze the hint's thread_schedule_hint_mode mode member that currently occupies a full byte, but needs only 2 bits, leaving sufficient space to encode the new task-size (which needs 2 bits only - unknown/small/medium/large). The other members of the thread_schedule_hint demonstrate how the bit packing can be done.
Also, eventually, the selected task-size of a thread should end up being stored in the thread_data type as well, as later we will need to access that information from withing the schedulers.
the size is now 2 bits in thread_schedule_hint, next to mode (also 2 bits now, with mode()/mode(x)). The hint stays 4 bytes and thread_init_data::size is gone. Code using hint.mode directly needs hint.mode() now, and a serialized launch policy is one byte longer
enum moved to thread_enums.hpp, trait is in threading_base. Specialized for deferred, the binders, one_shot, annotated_function and dataflow. Not for hpx::function and other type-erased ones (can't see through them), algorithm chunks (a chunk isn't one call) or actions (later step)
added get_task_size_v and small_task/medium_task/large_task (small_ because small is a macro on Windows), removed serialize
the sized_function specialization uses a separate default parameter, since with the same Size it only matched when both sizes were equal
thread_data will need its own byte for the size, it fits in existing padding, I'd add it with the scheduler step
Two questions:
What should the Size default be fed from? If it's for something like annotations, the wrapper winning over it fits the issue's order.
Right now a function's size overwrites the size in the launch policy's hint. If the executor property sets the policy's hint, that's the reverse of "executor property overrides wrapper". Should the policy's size win instead?

Thanks for the quick turnaround, the hint now stays at 4 bytes and the size travels the way it should. A few more points:
About my last comment (moving the specializations next to the types): I overlooked that deferred, bound, bound_front, bound_back and one_shot_wrapper live in the functional module, which can't see threads::task_size (coroutines depends on functional, not the other way around). This can be solved the same way as get_function_annotation: move task_size and the primary templates get_task_size/get_task_size_v into the functional module (for instance hpx/functional/traits/get_task_size.hpp), let thread_enums.hpp include that header so hpx::threads::task_size stays where it is, and put the specializations into deferred_call.hpp, bind.hpp, bind_front.hpp, bind_back.hpp and one_shot.hpp, next to their get_function_annotation specializations. The annotated_function and dataflow specializations are already in the right place.
The inspect check fails because of task_size_hint.cpp: the helper named check clashes with an Apple macro (line 53). Please rename it, for instance to check_sizes.
Issue #7837 proposed the user-facing names in namespace hpx (hpx::with_task_size, hpx::task_size), like hpx::annotated_function. Users will write hpx::post(hpx::large_task(f)) much more often than they touch the scheduler types, so I'd like with_task_size, small_task, medium_task and large_task (and task_size) to be available in namespace hpx as well, for instance through using-declarations, while sized_function can stay in hpx::threads.
sized_function::operator() is non-const only, so a sized_function can't be called through a const reference. annotated_function has the same limitation, but since this wrapper is meant to go around arbitrary user callables, please add a const overload (and consider returning decltype(auto)).
Everything else looks good to me: the 2-bit mode/task_size fields with the static_assert on the size, set_task_size keeping the policy's size for functions without one, the extra byte in the launch policy serialization, and the test that checks the size at create_thread. Once the inspect failure is fixed I'll have another look at the remaining CI results.
What should the Size default be fed from? If it's for something like annotations, the wrapper winning over it fits the issue's order.
I think it should default to task_size::unknown. The template argument is meant to be used for specializations only, nothing that we do today, simply an extension point for users wanting to do something special.
Right now a function's size overwrites the size in the launch policy's hint. If the executor property sets the policy's hint, that's the reverse of "executor property overrides wrapper". Should the policy's size win instead?
Good question. Can't we overwrite the function's size in executors that define it?
Match the result type to the stored callable’s reference category.
If F defines operator() & but not operator() &&, small_task(F{})() fails to compile. The result type tests F as an rvalue, while the body invokes the stored f as an lvalue. Use hpx::util::invoke_result_t<F&, Ts...> for this operator. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The new sized_function unit test does not compile with MSVC (14.52, VS 18 Insiders, Release). The Windows CI jobs here don't build the threading_base unit tests, so CI doesn't show it:
libs\core\threading_base\tests\unit\sized_function.cpp(97): error C2131: expression did not evaluate to a constant
libs\core\threading_base\include\hpx\threading_base\sized_function.hpp(45): note: failure was caused by a read of a variable not usable in constant expressions
libs\core\threading_base\include\hpx\threading_base\sized_function.hpp(45): note: see usage of 'lambda'
Line 97 is static_assert(size_of_object(with_task_size<task_size::medium>(lambda)) == task_size::medium);. with_task_size copies lambda into the wrapper, and lambda is a non-constexpr local, so MSVC refuses to evaluate the copy in a constant expression (the Linux CI builds accept it, the closure being empty). Declaring it constexpr auto lambda = [](int i) { return i; }; in test_trait() should fix it; the other uses of lambda there are in decltype and sizeof only and are not affected. Line 95 is fine since it wraps &plain_function.
Avoid evaluating the lambda in this static_assert.
with_task_size forwards the non-constexprlambda into its sized_function::f member. The call is evaluated by size_of_object during constant evaluation. This can trigger the reported MSVC 14.52 Release compilation failure and block the supported unit-test build. Use decltype to preserve the same type and size assertion without evaluating the wrapper.

bulk_async/bulk_sync and bulk_then already use the executor's size, since the chunks are internal tasks that hide the function's size
then_execute dropped the executor's whole hint, fixed now, so its size wins there too (this also passes the other hint bits through to the continuation now, which were dropped before)
the hierarchical bulk path with a function that returns a value let the function's size win, fixed with the same masking as post/async
Added tests for all paths.

We do have more executors besides the parallel_executor (fork_join_executor, scheduler_executor, explicit_scheduler_executor). Could you add similar changes to those as well?
We do have more executors besides the parallel_executor (fork_join_executor, scheduler_executor, explicit_scheduler_executor). Could you add similar changes to those as well?
Checked all three:
Scheduler_executor and explicit_scheduler_executor already let the executor's size win wherever they create a thread, so no change needed there, I added tests for it
fork_join_executor doesn't create a thread per call (it reuses its own worker threads), so there's nothing for a size to attach to. Side note: its post is private, so hpx::parallel::execution::post can't reach it, even though it's declared one-way
One difference to parallel_executor: the scheduler-based ones never use the function's own size, because the scheduler creates the thread around its own lambda before the function runs in the then() step. Making them match for post/sync_execute/async_execute would be small: schedule on a copy of the scheduler with the function's size in its hint when the scheduler has none. Do you want them consistent, or is the executor's size enough there?
@v4xsh, thanks again for this PR. While preparing 2.0.0 we found that one part of its design doesn't work as intended, and #7925 and #7926 change it. Here is why, as it also affects the next steps of #7837.
A task size describes how long a function runs, so it can only come from the function. A size given to an executor or a launch policy through thread_schedule_hint applies to every function run through it, and an executor is usually used for many unrelated functions (all the loop bodies of the parallel algorithms, for instance). In this PR that size also won over the size of the function, so a sized executor hid the sizes the functions actually had. #7925 makes the function the only source of a task size: a size in the hint of an executor, a launch policy or a scheduler now has no effect.
The same reasoning applies to bulk operations. Their tasks run the function many times, so the size of a single call says nothing about the task, and they no longer pass the size on. Hierarchical spawning is the exception, as it creates a task for each element: those tasks get the size of the function, and the tasks that only spawn other tasks are marked small.
#7926 adds the run-time side, matching what get_function_annotation does: get_task_size::call(f) finds the size of a function stored in an hpx::function or an hpx::move_only_function, and hpx::thread and run_as_hpx_thread now pass the size on as well.
#7925 also documents which run times the sizes stand for (about a microsecond or less for small, tens to hundreds of microseconds for medium, a millisecond or more for large). The scheduler needs this to use the sizes at all: a size that only orders tasks relative to each other can't be compared with anything it knows, while a known run time can be compared with its own costs, such as the cost of stealing a task or of waking a worker. Please keep these ranges in mind when choosing sizes and when implementing the scheduling side of #7837.
For the next steps of #7837, please attach sizes to functions only: with_task_size and its shorthands, or a get_task_size specialization (forwarding call) for wrappers of your own. Actions will take their size from the function they bind; that will be a separate PR.

Thanks for explaining, makes sense, the function is the only thing that knows how long it runs. I'll start 2a on top of #7925 and #7926 once they're in, with sizes only on functions, and keep the time ranges in mind.
