feat(profiles): add /gentle:profiles clear and unreadable-record warning - #1993
Review size: this slice changes 71 code lines in extensions/gentle-ai.ts plus 135 test lines and 2 doc lines. GitHub's Files tab shows the cumulative diff with the chain until it merges; review only commits 3a5fdd00c and 3f8f9dc2b.
Summary
Part of #1064, slice 3b-i, PR 5d (clear action and unreadable-record warning). Builds on Enter wiring from #1992. With this PR, 3b-i covers the full persistence spec: bind, clear, invalid/future handling, lifecycle and affected-launch safety.
Cleared vs never-bound: a session that never selected a profile, or is already cleared, writes nothing and gets a notice saying so.
Invalid or newer-version records: on start, resume, reload and tree navigation they raise a warning with the session file, the entry index and the line. Affected launches stay blocked (5b) until Enter or clear replaces the record, and clear reports that it cleared the unreadable record.
Out of scope: footer/Status redesign and Usage. The panel and footer keep showing (session) only for a bound profile.
Part of #2456: with this slice the resumed session restores its persisted profile authority and affected launches resolve routing from it. subagent_continue is gated on that authority but still re-resolves the model from the current binding instead of reusing the model frozen in the TaskRecord at launch; that continuation-reuse gap is left to a follow-up PR, which will close#2456.

CodeRabbit follow-up: an unsaved or in-memory never-bound session reads as indeterminate; with no profile record on the branch, clear now writes nothing instead of a record that could never be corroborated and would block launches.
Test plan
Verified on top of #1992 (b951b3fd6), commit 3f8f9dc2b:
9 new tests through the registered /gentle:profiles command on a real persisted session: RED (clear opened the panel; no warning existed), GREEN after.
Profile selections are saved with sessions and can be restored when reopening, resuming, forking, or navigating session history, when the saved selection is confirmed by the session file.
Added a clear option to remove a session’s saved profile selection.
Bug Fixes
Pending profile changes now settle before session transitions, helping keep saved selections consistent.
Invalid or unsupported saved selections are reported, and stale profile actions stop without affecting the current session.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Session profiles now persist as session records and restore from corroborated branch state. The extension adds clear handling, lifecycle synchronization, and authority checks before profile-dependent launches. New codecs, disk readers, append controllers, and tests cover persistence outcomes and fork behavior.
Changes: Session Profile Persistence and Lifecycle
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Profile format and disk corroboration lib/session-profile-persistence.ts, lib/session-profile-disk-reader.ts, docs/session-profile-format.md, tests/session-profile-persistence.test.ts, tests/session-profile-disk-reader*.test.ts
Adds v1 bind and clear records, branch replay, and disk corroboration. Tests cover record validation, branch selection, and inconsistent or unreadable session files.
Append authority and fork evidence lib/session-profile-append-controller.ts, tests/session-profile-append-controller*.test.ts
Adds append outcomes, refresh behavior, and fork handoff validation. Tests cover append failures, uncertain records, attachment changes, and copied branches.
Lifecycle and session authority lib/session-profile-integration.ts, lib/session-profile-authority.ts, tests/session-profile-integration.test.ts, tests/session-profile-authority.test.ts
Adds lifecycle attachment handling, queued selection coordination, and authority publication and reads. Tests cover session transitions, fork restoration, unavailable authority, and manager isolation.
Profile selection and clear actions now use the session integration. Session events synchronize profile state, and agent operations require available authority. Tests cover selection, clear, navigation, and launch behavior.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(profiles): add /gentle:profiles clear and unreadable-record warning" matches the main changes. The changeset adds the clear action to /gentle:profiles, which writes a kind=clear record, and adds warnings for unreadable or invalid session-profile records. The raw summary confirms both features in the extension, integration module, and tests. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit style, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support session-profile persistence and the routing authority needed by [#2456]. The handleProfilesClear command, notifySessionProfileProblem warnings, start, fork, tree, and shutdown lifecycle hooks, stale-context guards in the profiles panel, hasPendingSessionProfileSelection in lib/session-profile-integration.ts, the command help text, and docs/readme-reference.md all relate to the session-profile persistence work described in the PR. The new tests in tests/gentle-ai.test.ts, tests/session-profile-extension.test.ts, and tests/session-profile-integration.test.ts verify this behavior. The PR does not change footer, Status, or Usage behavior, which the PR description lists as out of scope. No unrelated change was identified in the reviewed evidence.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2456] The direct issue requires that a subagent always runs with the profile of its owning session. This includes continuations and restarts, and applies to any installed subagent runtime. The PR adds persisted session-profile authority, affected-launch gating, clear recovery, and lifecycle warnings. These changes address the session-side state. The PR does not meet two concrete requirements. (1) Continuation reuse: the PR description states that subagent_continue still re-resolves the model from the current binding instead of reusing the model frozen in the TaskRecord at launch. The issue names this behavior as a defect (manager.continueTask / resolveContinuationProfile). (2) Runtime coverage: the issue requires routing for pi-subagents when extensions/gentle-agents.ts is not loaded, or a documented cross-runtime resolver or event. The reviewed changes do not add that path. The PR calls itself 'Part of #2456' and defers continuation reuse to a follow-up. Deferral does not remove the requirement while #2456 remains an active directly linked target. The changes since the previous review do not add either behavior.
Resolution
Change the continuation path so it reuses the model frozen in the TaskRecord at launch instead of re-resolving from the current binding. Extend session-profile routing to the pi-subagents launch path, or expose a documented resolver or event that third-party launchers can apply. Add automated tests for these behaviors across restart and continuation scenarios. Alternatively, split the remaining #2456 work into a separate linked change and keep this PR from claiming to satisfy #2456.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Guard the fallback notice with isCommandContextActive(ctx).
runCurrentSessionProfileSelection returns undefined in two cases:
No attachment exists.
A reload or session replacement made the queued selection stale before it ran.
In the stale case, Pi's runner throws on any access to ctx, so ctx.ui.notify at Line 5395 throws from the command handler. The Enter path in runProfilesPanelAction (Lines 4716-4720) already guards the same notice with isCommandContextActive(ctx). A /gentle:profiles clear queued behind a pending Enter during /reload reaches this state.
🐛 Proposed fix
- if (selected === undefined)+ if (selected === undefined && isCommandContextActive(ctx))
ctx.ui.notify("el Gentleman cannot clear the session profile: the current session attachment is unavailable. Nothing was changed.", "warning");

noProfile duplicates the family predicate and hardcodes the "gentle-pi.session-profile/" prefix. The disk reader and the append controller already share isSessionProfileFamilyEntry from session-profile-persistence.ts. A later prefix or predicate change would then update the reader and the controller but not this authority shortcut. A branch could then be classified as profile-less here while the reader selects a profile record from it.

* Custom tools (or replace built-in tools entirely)
* Sub-agents and plan mode
* Custom compaction and summarization
* Permission gates and path protection
* Custom editors and UI components
* Status lines, headers, footers
* Git checkpointing and auto-commit
* SSH and sandbox execution
* MCP server integration
* Make pi look like Claude Code
* Games while waiting (yes, Doom runs)
* ...anything you can dream up
Place in `~/.pi/agent/extensions/`, `.pi/extensions/`, or a pi package to share with others. See docs/extensions.md and examples/extensions/.
### Themes
Built-in: `dark`, `light`. Themes hot-reload: modify the active theme file and pi immediately applies changes.
Place in `~/.pi/agent/themes/`, `.pi/themes/`, or a pi package to share with others. See docs/themes.md.
### Pi Packages
Bundle and share extensions, skills, prompts, and themes via npm or git. Find packages on npmjs.com or Discord.
pi update --models # refresh model catalogs only
pi update --self # update pi only
pi update --self --force # reinstall pi even if current
pi update npm:@foo/pi-tools # update one package
pi config # enable/disable extensions, skills, prompts, themes
Packages install to `~/.pi/agent/git/` (git) or `~/.pi/agent/npm/` (npm). Use `-l` for project-local installs (`.pi/git/`, `.pi/npm/`). Git `@ref` values are pinned tags or commits; pinned packages are skipped by `pi update --extensions` and `pi update --all`, so use `pi install git:host/user/repo@new-ref` to move an existing package to a new ref. Git packages install dependencies with `npm install --omit=dev` by default, so runtime deps must be listed under `dependencies`; when `npmCommand` is configured, git packages use plain `install` for compatibility with wrappers. If you use a Node version manager and want package installs to reuse a stable npm context, set `npmCommand` in `settings.json`, for example `["mise", "exec", "node@20", "--", "npm"]`.

## Run with Nix
nix run github:earendil-works/pi/stable
`stable` points at the latest release. Install it with `nix profile add github:earendil-works/pi/stable` and update with `nix profile upgrade pi`. Use a release tag such as `github:earendil-works/pi/v1.0.0` to pin a version, or `github:earendil-works/pi` for unreleased changes on `main`. Nix builds Pi from source.
Supports ARM64 and x86-64 on Linux and macOS. Use `nix build .` or `nix run .` to build or run your checkout.
Nix builds are offline, so the bundled model data comes from a pi.dev model catalog revision pinned in `nix/model-catalog.json`. At runtime, Pi still overlays newer catalog data from pi.dev as usual. The Nix workflow replaces the pin on `main` when it no longer matches the checkout, for example after a provider is added or gains a new model type. To refresh it by hand:
npm run update:model-catalog-pin

Expose the loader through a supported API before replacing this import.
The package does not currently provide a public export for loadExtensionFromFactory. Add one upstream, then import it from that API. Do not replace this path with a package-root import because that symbol is not exported there.

Rebasing the whole chain in one pass and squashing the fixes into their commits is exactly how I like to see this handled — thanks for the careful work here.
One thing CodeRabbit's Linked Issues check surfaced, and I confirmed it in the diff: subagent_continue in #1991 gates on requireSessionProfileAuthority and then falls through to buildRequest, which re-resolves the model fresh from the session profile. So this slice genuinely fixes "session-bound profile reaches subagents" (the persistence via 3b-i is the big one), but a continuation still re-resolves rather than reusing the model frozen in the TaskRecord at launch time. Scenario: task launched on model A, session re-binds (or the new binding has no row for that agent) before the continuation → the continuation crosses models.
Two options, and I'm fine with either:
Soften Fixes #2456 to Part of #2456 in this slice, and track the continuation-reuse gap as its own issue.
Either way this chain is mergeable as 3b-i as far as I'm concerned — the gate ordering before resolveSessionProfile and the conditional session_shutdown await both look right to me.
Thanks for catching that and confirming it in the diff — you're right, subagent_continue still re-resolves instead of reusing the TaskRecord's launched model.
Let's do both: I've switched #1993 from Fixes #2456 to Part of #2456 so the issue stays open when the chain lands, and I'd love for you to open your lib/continuation-model.ts follow-up once it's merged — that PR can carry the Fixes #2456.
Reviewed the delta (ca1f62da8 + 512587c7b) on top of #1992: the clear flow is the right shape — nothing written for never-bound/already-cleared sessions, unreadable record as the recovery case, publish-only-returned-state, and the warning with file/entry/line for invalid and newer-version records. Targeted tests pass (305 across the session-profile + gentle-ai files), typecheck clean, CI green.
Two notes:
Should-fix before landing:handleProfilesClear notifies on selected === undefined without the isCommandContextActive(ctx) guard. That is exactly the race feat(profiles): persist Enter session profile selection and wire lifecycle #1992's follow-up (ec90de8dc) fixed for Enter: a reload or session replacement while the selection is pending (e.g. held on authentication, same as the live switch) leaves a stale ctx, and ctx.ui throws. The Enter shape is the reference: guard the missing-attachment notice the same way.
Landing heads-up:main rewrote /gentle:profiles since this forked — the command now parses verbs (export, import, usage) in handleProfilesCommand and opens the routing screen otherwise. clear will need to slot in as a verb there rather than the pre-check in the command handler, and notifySessionProfileProblem merges into the reworked session_start/session_tree hooks. Nothing conceptual, just where it lands.
This one stacks on #1992, so it inherits that PR's rebase request (see my comment there — the models screen rewrite is the semantic part). Once both are rebased I'll re-review and land them in order.
Out of curiosity for the follow-up on #2456: agreed that subagent_continue re-resolving from the current binding is acceptable for now; reusing the frozen TaskRecord model is the honest semantics for a continuation, so tracking it separately is right.
…cycle
Enter appends the session profile record, publishes only the returned
state, and switches the live orchestrator while that snapshot stays
current. Session start, fork, tree and shutdown hooks drive the profile
integration, and the profiles panel closes instead of reusing a ctx made
stale by reload or session replacement.
Refs Gentleman-Programming#1064
Pi's runner invalidates the command ctx in a microtask, so a reload can
land while a panel or input step is still in flight. Every step now
re-checks the ctx when it settles, and the U3 fixture drives the tabbed
models screen (arrows move tabs, u uses the profile in this session).

Bare clear is handled by the registered command. However, clear foo reaches handleProfilesCommand, loads or seeds profiles.json, and only then shows the usage warning. Reject clear with extra arguments before loadProfilesStore.

Update the stale "nothing persisted" claim for Use in this session.
This paragraph is unchanged, but this PR makes it inaccurate. It says Use in this session makes "the same live move, nothing persisted." Line 1101 now says the selection is appended to the session file as its own record. A reader can take the two statements as a contradiction.
Narrow the claim to what is true: the action skips the global settings.json write and persists only the session record.

…hority (Gentleman-Programming#2623)
Binding a profile with u in /gentle:profiles was dropped by the first
subagent launch when the session file already existed: the action bound
the in-memory map only, so noProfile found no session profile record and
the Gentleman-Programming#1991 authority check cleared the binding. The regression test drives
the panel action against a real persisted session under the profile
integration and asserts the binding survives requireSessionProfileAuthority.
/gentle:profiles clear appends an explicit clear record and publishes the
returned state; never-bound and already-cleared sessions write nothing and
say so. Invalid or newer-version session profile records warn with the
session file and entry index on start and tree navigation, and clear
recovers them.
Refs Gentleman-Programming#1064
An unsaved or in-memory branch reads as indeterminate; with no profile record
on the branch, clear writes nothing instead of appending a record that could
never be corroborated and would block launches.

Refs Gentleman-Programming#1064
Hi @barbatdev, both notes addressed and rebased on the updated #1992:
The clear missing-attachment notice is now guarded with isCommandContextActive(ctx), mirroring Enter; a new stale-ctx test fails without the guard.
clear is now a verb in handleProfilesCommand (clear <extra> gets the usage warning); the command-handler pre-check is gone. notifySessionProfileProblem was already wired into the current session_start/session_tree hooks.
Updated this branch with current main (merge commit 9968e5efd, no history rewrite) so the Files tab shows only this slice's delta again: 3 files, +252/−7.
The tree is verified identical to a straight rebase of your four commits onto 77fd46c66, and the full local suite on the updated head runs 7854 tests / 0 fail. Main brought the models-screen rewrite (already adapted in #1992), plus #2624 and #2621, none of which touch this slice.
One observation from the validation runs, not from this PR: tests/orchestrator-consultation-sdk.test.ts failed once mid-suite with a Git-probe count assertion (metadata query adds no caller Git probes, 32 !== 30) and passed on every isolated and subsequent full run, on both main and this branch. Looks environment-sensitive rather than deterministic; worth a look if it shows up in CI.

Summary
Part of #1064, slice 3b-i, PR 5d (clear action and unreadable-record warning). Builds on Enter wiring from #1992. With this PR, 3b-i covers the full persistence spec: bind, clear, invalid/future handling, lifecycle and affected-launch safety.
/gentle:profiles clear(agreed in feat(profiles): support session-bound active profiles without global routing mutation #1064, no new shortcut): appendskind=clearand publishes only the returned state. New launches use the routing without a session profile (pins, repository declaration, global). The live orchestrator and every shared default are untouched.(session)only for a bound profile.Issue
Part of #1064
Part of #2456: with this slice the resumed session restores its persisted profile authority and affected launches resolve routing from it.
subagent_continueis gated on that authority but still re-resolves the model from the current binding instead of reusing the model frozen in the TaskRecord at launch; that continuation-reuse gap is left to a follow-up PR, which will close #2456.PR type
