docs: settle the sidecar compose filename and dev deployment - #43
Render the sidecar as docker-compose.yml in the deployment directory; use Compose's default filename once there.
Move the tracked example to docker-compose.example.yml and document the deployment tree and --code conventions.
Default gcb probe/gcb logs to github.com; --host is no longer required.
Document the local gcb-host:dev / gcb-client:dev image build, image-based sidecar recreate, and runtime GCB_PROXY.
Make --user <pusher uid:gid> explicit: the socket is 0660, so a sidecar running as another identity cannot connect.
corepack yarn check: 339 pass.

Explanation
Issue #21 is the only active directly linked issue. The supplied PR evidence shows the generated file is docker-compose.yml, the tracked example is docker-compose.example.yml, and related init, README, DEVELOPMENT.md, .gitignore, and example content use the new layout. The documentation covers broker.config.yml, app.pem, log/, the staged code directory, absolute -f and --code paths, and the fact that app is only a convention. Issue #21 lists STAGED.json enforcement as a consideration, not a requirement. The issue does not require a runtime behavior change or a specific automated test.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Issue #21 states that no runtime behavior change is implied. This PR changes gcb probe and gcb logs so that omitted --host values default to github.com, and it adds validation for bare and empty --host values. The supplied evidence identifies these changes in packages/client/src/commands/probe.ts, packages/client/src/commands/logs.ts, test/unit/commands.test.ts, and the gcb-client changeset. These changes do not implement the compose filename or deployment layout requirements.
Resolution
Remove the gcb probe and gcb logs host-default and empty-host changes from this PR. Restore the required --host behavior and remove the related tests and changeset text. Track the host-default behavior in a separate issue and pull request if it is required.

Review — changes requested
corepack yarn check passes (339) and CI is green. Two small fixes, one in the new dev workflow and one in the code placement.
1. DEVELOPMENT.md's dev workflow still renders into the repository root
The block at lines 88–92 runs docker build ... . — which needs the repository root as cwd — then gcb compose ... > docker-compose.yml, which writes to that same cwd, and docker compose config, which reads that same cwd. The new paragraph at line 110 then says “Run it from that deployment directory … not the repository root”, but no cd or --dir is shown. The block cannot satisfy both.
I ran the compose half from the repository root: it warned no configuration at /…/broker.config.yml yet and rendered - /…/broker.config.yml:/etc/git-cred-broker/broker.config.yml:ro, i.e. a repository-root deployment. With /docker-compose.broker.yml removed from .gitignore and no /docker-compose.yml rule added, that rendered file is now untracked but not ignored, so host-specific bind paths can be committed by accident. If the whole block is run in a deployment directory instead, docker build . fails.
Fix: make the deployment directory explicit, as in the README quick start — after the build, DEPLOY=…, gcb compose --dir "$DEPLOY" … > "$DEPLOY/docker-compose.yml", then cd "$DEPLOY" && docker compose config and up -d; or keep the dev render at the repository root and add the ignore rule back. The README diagnose snippet at line 288 also uses $DEPLOY without defining it in that section; an explicit path or “from the deployment directory” line would make it copy-pasteable.
2. shellQuote sits inside the import block
packages/host/src/commands/init.ts:32-35 declares the helper between the ../policy.ts import and the gcb-core imports. It compiles and the output is correct, but it is an obvious misplaced edit; move it below all imports. A small test for the quoted output would be nice, but not required.
Non-blocking
Existing sidecar deployments: the old docker-compose.broker.yml is no longer ignored, and init's restart message now only says cd … && docker compose up -d. An existing deployment that still has the old filename gets a command that finds no docker-compose.yml; the rename notice from 84a7ea4 was dropped in dc4adcae. A one-line “rename or re-render the compose file” note, or keeping the old ignore for a transition, would avoid the surprise.
docker-compose.example.yml is a document with fenced snippets rather than valid YAML. The header says so, but at the repository root with a .yml name it is easier to mistake for a runnable compose file. Optional.
The shellQuote implementation itself is correct (single quotes with embedded quotes escaped), and the rendered startup commands now use compose's default filename. Once the dev workflow and the helper placement are fixed, this should be ready.

The two change requests are addressed:
DEVELOPMENT.md now builds from the repository root but renders into an explicit $DEPLOY directory, passes the required --socket-dir, and runs docker compose config from that directory. The README diagnose snippet now defines $DEPLOY too.
shellQuote now sits below the import block in packages/host/src/commands/init.ts.
Verified: corepack yarn check 339 pass, and CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL. All review threads are resolved.

The follow-up adds the pusher's uid:gid to the dev compose command via --user, which is the flag that renders the sidecar's user: and has to match the container that uses the socket. The earlier fixes remain in place: the compose file is rendered into an explicit $DEPLOY with --socket-dir, and shellQuote sits below the imports.
The only change since the verified source head is documentation, and CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL. The CodeRabbit finding is addressed.

Review — changes requested
corepack yarn check passes (339) and CI is green. I verified the new default reaches the broker as host: "github.com" for both probe and logs. Three things need fixing before this is ready.
1. Missing gcb-client changeset (blocker)
packages/client/src/commands/probe.ts and logs.ts now default --host, but .changeset/compose-layout.md only bumps gcb-host. DEVELOPMENT.md says a PR that changes a published package adds a changeset; without one, gcb-client is not versioned or published for this behavior. Add 'gcb-client': patch and mention the default host (and the --user guidance in the host entry if you want the changelog to show it).
2. Dev image tags disagree between docs
DEVELOPMENT.md now builds code-vaults/gcb-host:dev / code-vaults/gcb-client:dev, while README.md (lines 104, 108, 633–634, 642–643), the Dockerfile header (lines 8–9), and the idsh example use ghcr.io/code-vaults/...:dev. A reader following one doc will not find the image named by the other. Pick one name and update all of them; if the non-registry name is intentional, the README Images section and Dockerfile comment need the same change.
3. The dev deployment command loses --config if followed literally
DEVELOPMENT.md line 110 says to change the generated final exec npx ... to exec gcb daemon. The generated line is:
The image's CMD has no config default, and the container's working directory is /, so replacing the whole command as written starts gcb daemon without --config. The README wording keeps --config ...; please show the resulting line, or say only the npx ... gcb prefix is replaced, so the dev sidecar still finds its config.
Non-blocking
Add a test for the new default: the existing probe test still passes --host github.com. A fake socket that records the request would assert both probe and logs send github.com when the flag is omitted.
--host '' now forwards an empty host; the old check refused it, and gcb pr still has an explicit empty-host refusal and test. Consider keeping a host === '' check in both commands.
The README probe/logs examples could drop --host to advertise the default, but explicit is not wrong.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Approved at 6a9ab37.
All three requested fixes are in place:
The changeset now bumps gcb-client and gcb-host, with the client default and --user guidance described.
The dev image tags are aligned across README, DEVELOPMENT and the Dockerfile, and the idsh example uses the same name.
The dev compose replacement keeps --config /etc/git-cred-broker/broker.config.yml explicit.
The follow-up also rejects an explicitly empty --host in both probe and logs while keeping the github.com default; the existing socket-discovery test now covers the omitted host. Verified corepack yarn check 339 pass and CI green on all four jobs.
The open README thread about the example uid is addressed by the same commit; I resolved it.

Review — changes requested
The --host handling is now correct: an omitted flag defaults to github.com, while a bare --host and --host '' both fail. corepack yarn check passes and CI is green on all four jobs. One gap remains in the new ownership paragraph.
user.refresh is missing from the ownership list
gcb authorize writes user.refresh beside the key, with mode 0600 and owned by the invoking user, and compose mounts it read-write because GitHub rotates the token on every exchange.
If the sidecar runs as PUSHER_UID/PUSHER_GID and those differ from the user who ran init/authorize, the broker cannot read that file — or can read it but cannot write the rotated token back — so the person-token routes fail. The new paragraph lists the config, key and log/, but not this writable secret.
Please include it, and note that authorize may create it after the initial chown: for example, “and user.refresh, if authorize has created it (re-run the chown after authorize)”. It should stay 0600. The log/ chown should also cover an existing audit file, since the sidecar appends to it.
Non-blocking
Add tests for the bare and empty --host cases in probe and logs; the existing socket-discovery test only covers omission.
The README probe/logs examples could drop --host now that it defaults, but explicit examples are not wrong.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Approved at 20275ae.
The README ownership paragraph now covers user.refresh as a 0600 read-write file that must be readable and writable by the sidecar user, includes re-running the chown after authorize creates it, and names an existing audit file in the log chown. The --host handling, changeset coverage, and dev-doc alignment from the previous round remain in place.
CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL. Non-blocking: tests for the bare/empty --host cases in probe and logs are still worth adding, since only the omission case is covered.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Approved at 0ed8dc6.
The new test block covers both bare --host and --host '' for probe and logs at the CLI boundary, so the refusals that were added in 154aa5e are now protected. Nothing else changed.
Verified corepack yarn check: 343 pass (the four new cases included), and CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL.

Add a probe-specific assertion for the omitted host.
The socket-discovery test calls runProbe(['--repo', 'a/one']), but it only asserts exit code 3 after resolving an absent socket. A regression that sends the wrong host can produce the same result.
The existing host-request test covers pr, not probe. Add a probe test with a reachable test socket and assert that the request contains host: 'github.com'.
