Adds the Phase 1 gcb config check command: it resolves the configuration the same way every host command does, validates it with loadConfig, and prints the deployment mode and hosts without starting the broker.

  • config is in HOST_COMMANDS; the host backend references that list instead of duplicating it.
  • --config is accepted once with a value; repeated, valueless, unknown flags and extra positionals are refused.
  • Includes a gcb-host changeset, README/AGENTS/ROADMAP updates and command tests.

corepack yarn check: 347 pass.

Validate the configuration and report its deployment mode and hosts without starting the broker.

Checked out the head, ran corepack yarn install and corepack yarn check (344 pass), and exercised the command against real configs.

Blocking

1. config is missing from HOST_COMMANDS (packages/core/src/index.ts:26-36).
hostBackend.commands and HOST_HELP both gained config, but the core list runCli uses to explain a command from the wrong side did not. The container-side binary therefore says the command does not exist:

$ node packages/client/bin/gcb.js config check
gcb: unknown command `config`.
...
$ node packages/client/bin/gcb.js compose --help
gcb: `compose` is a host command; install gcb-host on the host.
$ node packages/client/bin/gcb.js help config
gcb: unknown command `config`.

That is exactly the drift packages/core/src/index.ts says this module exists to prevent. Either add 'config' there, or — better — make hostBackend.commands reference HOST_COMMANDS so there is one list instead of two that can disagree. test/unit/gh-command.test.ts:455 already pins the wrong-package message for host.

2. No changeset for the new command. Every user-visible change here has come with one (.changeset/compose-layout.md from #43, .changeset/review-by-id.md from #40). With the fixed group, the pending 0.0.2 release would ship gcb config check with a changelog that does not mention it. A patch changeset for gcb-host is enough; the fixed group bumps the rest.

Non-blocking

  • packages/host/src/commands/config.ts:29: the (none) branch is unreachable — validateConfig already refuses an empty hosts (hosts must be a non-empty object, config.ts:348), so hosts.join(', ') alone says the same thing.
  • runConfig is async with nothing awaited (loadConfig is readFileSync); runCompose has the sync shape, and returning number from the async dispatcher is fine. Dropping async is free.
  • gcb config check --config (no value) and a misspelled --confg path both validate ./broker.config.yml and exit 0: parseArgs records a trailing --config as a boolean and ignores unknown flags. Verified in a directory with a valid broker.config.yml — the broken file passed on the command line was never read. diagnose/authorize share the parser behaviour, so this is pre-existing, but for a command whose whole job is "validate this file" a guard on args.has('config') && args.value('config') === undefined is cheap and prevents a green result for the wrong file.
  • README.md:289: the new line is an example under "Check it without pushing" with no sentence about what the command does or where it runs. Unlike probe (socket) and diagnose (needs the key), config check reads only the configuration file; saying so is what tells a reader whether it belongs on the host or in the sidecar.
  • AGENTS.md's layout table still enumerates the host command modules as "init, stage, compose, diagnose, authorize and host-opener", and ROADMAP.md:148 keeps config check and config edit on one unticked line. Updating the table and noting that check has landed keeps the working notes accurate.
  • No test covers the new command (the count is unchanged at 344). A few cases in test/unit/commands.test.ts — a valid file prints mode and hosts, an invalid and a missing file exit 1, an extra positional is a usage error — would pin the output, and an enumeration of HOST_COMMANDS in the wrong-package test would have caught finding 1.

Verified okay

  • gcb config check --config <file> prints ok: <absolute path> (<mode>) plus the hosts and exits 0; malformed YAML, a failed validation and a missing file each exit 1 with the loader's message and no doubled error: prefix.
  • An unknown subcommand or extra positional gives error: usage: gcb config check [--config <path>] and exit 1; --help, gcb config --help and gcb help config on the host print the usage and exit 0.
  • It resolves the path exactly like the other host commands (--config, else $GIT_BROKER_CONFIG, else ./broker.config.yml), does not read the key and does not start the broker — the right scope for the roadmap's one-shot validation.

Validate the configuration and report its deployment mode and hosts without starting the broker.

Fixed in f5f1757: config is now in HOST_COMMANDS and the host backend references that list; the command rejects an empty --config, unknown flags and extra positionals; the changeset, README/AGENTS/ROADMAP updates and command tests are included. corepack yarn check: 346 pass.

Review — f5f1757

Re-checked after the update: corepack yarn install + corepack yarn check (346 pass), all four CI jobs green (Linux, macOS, Windows refusal, WSL), and the CLI exercised against valid, broken and missing configurations.

Both change requests are fixed:

  • config is in HOST_COMMANDS, and hostBackend.commands now references that list, so the two can no longer disagree. Verified from the installed client: gcb config check and gcb help config now say `config` is a host command; install gcb-host on the host, matching compose.
  • .changeset/config-check.md records the new command for the pending release.

The rest of the update also holds up:

  • --config with no value and --config= fail with --config needs a value; --confg path and --bogus fail with unknown option --…, instead of silently validating ./broker.config.yml (reproduced before the fix: a broken file on the command line exited 0 while the default was checked).
  • gcb config check --config <file> still prints ok: <abs path> (<mode>) + hosts and exits 0; a rejected config and a missing file exit 1 with the loader's message.
  • The (none) branch is gone, runConfig is sync, and the README sentence, AGENTS.md table and split ROADMAP.md items are accurate.
  • The new tests in test/unit/commands.test.ts pass on Linux and macOS.

Non-blocking, for whenever this file is next touched:

  • The extra-positional case passes ['check', 'extra'], but the helper already prepends config check, so this really tests two extra positionals; ['extra'] is the case named. The failure cases assert only the status, so the new unknown option / --config needs a value messages are not pinned.
  • gcb config check --help --bogus exits 1 because the unknown-option check runs before the help check. Either order is defensible; worth knowing that --help does not always win here.

Approving.

Re-checked the new head: corepack yarn install + corepack yarn check (347 pass), all four CI jobs green (Linux, macOS, Windows refusal, WSL), and the CLI exercised against valid, invalid and missing configurations.

The update addresses both notes from the previous review:

  • Help now wins: gcb config check --help --bogus, --bogus --help and --config --help all print the usage and exit 0.
  • The refusal test now pins the messages, not only the status — cannot read config for a missing file, --config needs a value for a bare flag, unknown option --confg for a misspelled one, and usage: gcb config check for extra (now a single extra positional).

Everything from the earlier rounds still holds: config is single-sourced in HOST_COMMANDS, the client refuses it as a host command (gcb config check and gcb help config), the changeset/README/AGENTS/ROADMAP updates are accurate, the dead (none) branch is gone, and runConfig is sync.

No remaining findings. Approving.

Review — b1aeea0

Re-checked the new head: corepack yarn install + corepack yarn check (347 pass), all four CI jobs green (Linux, macOS, Windows refusal, WSL), and the CLI exercised again.

The update behaves as intended:

  • --config a --config b, --config a --config, and a trailing bare --config all exit 1 instead of silently taking the first value.
  • --config= still fails with --config needs a value; a valid single --config <file> still prints ok: <abs path> (<mode>) and hosts, exit 0.
  • Help still wins over option validation (--help --bogus, --config --help), unknown options and extra positionals are still refused, and the client still reports `config` is a host command.
  • The tests cover the repeated, valueless and misspelled cases.

One non-blocking polish note, not worth another round: the combined message reads oddly for a single flag — gcb config check --config says "--config may only be given once and needs a value", where "may only be given once" is irrelevant. Splitting it into --config needs a value (bare/empty) and --config may only be given once (repeated) would read better, and the test title could mention the repeated/misspelled cases it now covers.

Approving.
