Fixes #7773

Proposed Changes

  • precompute same-domain and permitted remote victim masks for each work-requesting scheduler worker
  • try same-domain victims first, then use the level 0/1/2 NUMA policy to select eligible remote domains
  • propagate hpx.numa_sensitive through the FIFO, LIFO, and MC work-requesting scheduler configurations
  • stop set_scheduler_mode from unconditionally restoring cross-NUMA stealing
  • add victim-mask, victim-selection, and scheduler-mode regression tests
  • update the command-line help and manual to include the work-requesting schedulers

Any background context you want to provide?

This PR is stacked on #7756 because it uses the three-level numa_sensitive_mode and the shared distance-ordered NUMA-domain helper introduced there. Once #7756 merges, this branch can be rebased so that only the three work-requesting commits remain.

Validation:

  • Release C++20 build with HPX_WITH_WORK_REQUESTING_SCHEDULERS=ON
  • workrequesting_numa, workrequesting_random_victim, workrequesting_scheduler_mode, workrequesting_steal, and workrequesting_suspend_resume pass
  • HPX inspect passes

The complete scheduler unit group passes 15/16 in this configuration. The remaining min_tasks_to_steal_staged failure is issue #7772 and is fixed separately by #7777.

Checklist

Not all points below apply to all pull requests.

  • I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
  • I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
  • I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added three NUMA-sensitivity levels for controlling cross-domain work stealing: unrestricted, nearby domains for boundary workers, or disabled.
    • Level 1 is now the default and can be overridden through command-line options or configuration.
    • Schedulers prioritize same-domain work and apply sensitivity rules to stealing and work requests.
    • Clarified that --hpx:bind=none disables thread-affinity definition.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Scheduler sensitivity queries now report an initialization error before the runtime is ready.
    • Improved handling of queuing command-line options.

NUMA sensitivity now has levels 0, 1, and 2, with level 1 as the default. The runtime passes the selected mode to schedulers. Local, local-priority, and work-requesting schedulers use NUMA topology to select eligible remote workers.

Changes: NUMA-aware work stealing

The command-line and runtime defaults change to level 1. Scheduler initialization receives the selected mode. The runtime query checks initialization state. Documentation and tests cover the three levels and configuration handling.
Select remote domains for local schedulers
libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/queue_helpers.hpp, libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/local_*queue_scheduler.hpp, libs/core/schedulers/tests/unit/...
A shared helper orders eligible remote domains by distance. Local and local-priority schedulers use those domains to restrict cross-domain stealing.
Separate local and remote work-requesting victims
libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/local_workrequesting_scheduler.hpp, libs/core/schedulers/tests/unit/...
The work-requesting scheduler builds local and remote victim masks and advances requests to remote victims after local attempts are exhausted. Tests cover masks, victim selection, and scheduler modes.
Preserve queuing-option parsing
libs/core/command_line_handling_local/tests/regressions/queuing_options_7743.cpp
The queuing option consumes a following non-option value only when one exists. Regression tests cover valued and valueless cases.

The scheduler change looks consistent with the intended NUMA-sensitivity levels. One documentation page may still describe the old on/off semantics and should be updated before merge.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For [#7773], the FIFO, MC, and LIFO work-requesting schedulers pass numa_sensitive_mode into their initialization. Each worker builds separate same-domain and permitted remote victim masks. Victim requests use same-domain victims first and use eligible remote domains afterward. The NUMA helper implements levels 0, 1, and 2. set_scheduler_mode no longer forces enable_stealing_numa. The added victim-mask, domain-selection, and scheduler-mode tests cover the requested behavior. The command-line help and manual document the work-requesting schedulers.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The NUMA plumbing, scheduler logic, tests, and documentation support [#7773]. The change to libs/core/command_line_handling_local/tests/regressions/queuing_options_7743.cpp changes --hpx:queuing argument filtering and adds unrelated queuing tests. The reviewed diff shows no connection between that change and NUMA-sensitive work-requesting schedulers.

Resolution

Remove the queuing_options_7743.cpp change from this pull request or move it to a separate pull request.

🟡 Minor · Document all NUMA sensitivity levels for ABP and… · hpx_runtime_and_resources.rst:96-99

docs/sphinx/manual/hpx_runtime_and_resources.rst:96-99
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document all NUMA sensitivity levels for ABP and work-requesting schedulers.

The ABP scheduler checks same-domain queues first, but level 1 also restricts cross-domain stealing to boundary workers and nearest domains. Level 2 disables remote stealing. The work-requesting scheduler applies the same level policy to its local and remote victim masks. Update both sections as follows:

📝 Suggested documentation update
queue from which threads will be scheduled only when there is no other work. For
-this scheduling policy there is an option to turn on NUMA sensitivity using the
-command line option :option:`--hpx:numa-sensitive`. When NUMA sensitivity
-is turned on work stealing is done from queues associated with the same NUMA
-domain first, only after that work is stolen from other NUMA domains.
+this scheduling policy the command line option
+:option:`--hpx:numa-sensitive` controls NUMA-sensitive work stealing. The
+scheduler checks queues in the same NUMA domain first. At level ``0`` all
+workers may then steal across NUMA domains. At the default level ``1`` only
+boundary workers may steal from the nearest NUMA domains. At level ``2``
+workers may not steal across NUMA domains.
@@
In general, this scheme avoids contention on the
work queues as those are always accessed by their own cores only.
+Requests first try workers in the same NUMA domain. At level ``0`` all workers
+may request work across NUMA domains. At the default level ``1`` only boundary
+workers may request work from the nearest NUMA domains. At level ``2`` workers
+may not request work across NUMA domains.
