Fixes #7774

Proposed Changes

  • route NUMA scheduling hints to worker threads on the requested domain
  • share the NUMA-aware selection path across thread creation and rescheduling
  • add deterministic selection coverage and runtime tests for both work-requesting schedulers

Any background context you want to provide?

The scheduler previously treated every non-thread hint as an unspecified hint. If the requested domain has no worker in the pool, the new selection path preserves the existing round-robin fallback.

Checklist

Not all points below apply to all pull requests.

  • I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
  • I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
  • I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • NUMA scheduling hints now select workers from the requested domain when available, while preserving explicit thread hints and fallback behavior for supported hint types.
    • High-priority tasks are matched only with workers that have high-priority queues. If no eligible worker is found in the requested domain, scheduling falls back to the round-robin-selected worker.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for NUMA-based worker selection with both local work-requesting scheduler variants, including fallback and high-priority worker selection.

The work-requesting scheduler records each worker’s NUMA domain and uses NUMA scheduling hints to select workers during thread creation and scheduling. A new test checks worker selection and task placement with the FIFO and MC schedulers.

Changes: NUMA hint support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record domains and select workers
libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/local_workrequesting_scheduler.hpp
The scheduler records each worker’s NUMA domain and selects a matching worker for NUMA hints. If no worker matches, it uses the round-robin starting worker.
Apply worker selection to scheduling
libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/local_workrequesting_scheduler.hpp
Thread creation, normal scheduling, and last-place scheduling use the shared selection logic. Scheduling preserves allow_fallback for thread and NUMA hints and clears it for other hint modes.
Test NUMA selection and scheduling
libs/core/schedulers/tests/unit/workrequesting_numa_hint.cpp, libs/core/schedulers/tests/unit/CMakeLists.txt
The test checks worker selection and task placement for FIFO and MC work-requesting schedulers. The test configuration sets four threads per locality.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7774 requires NUMA hints in create_thread, schedule_thread, and schedule_thread_last. The selector records worker NUMA domains, selects a worker in the requested domain, and preserves round-robin fallback when no worker matches. All three paths use the selector. The added test covers deterministic selection, fallback, priority filtering, and runtime execution with both work-requesting schedulers.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #7774. The scheduler changes implement NUMA-aware worker selection and fallback. The test and CMake changes provide regression coverage for the affected schedulers. No unrelated functionality is identified.

- Around line 2041-2043: Update select_worker’s NUMA selection path so a missing
domain advances curr_queue_ only once across the fallback flow; preserve the
round-robin sequence by returning the initial queue position as the fallback or
advancing the counter only after a worker match.
- Line 721: Update `select_worker` in the high-priority scheduling path to
search NUMA matches only among workers eligible for high-priority queues when
`num_high_priority_queues_` is less than `num_queues_`. If no eligible worker
matches the requested domain, preserve the existing round-robin fallback.

Thanks! This overlaps with the NUMA changes in #7756 and #7779 (per-worker NUMA domains, shared NUMA helpers), so I'll wait with the review until #7756 is merged, to keep the review surface small. I'll then look at this together with the rebased #7779.

@hkaiser hkaiser added this to the 2.1.0 milestone Oct 19, 2026
