Add context to entrypoint import errors packages/wxt/src/internal/builders/vite/index.ts, packages/wxt/e2e/tests/entrypoint-errors.test.ts |
Matching undefined-name ReferenceErrors now include the entrypoint path and loader guidance, with the original error retained as the cause. Tests cover missing browser globals during evaluation, errors from imported dependencies, preservation of unrelated thrown values, and browser globals accessed inside main. |

Explanation
The title "fix(wxt): explain missing globals when loading entrypoints" matches the main change. The diff adds a ReferenceError wrapper in ViteBuilder.importEntrypoints that reports the entrypoint path and guidance for browser globals used outside main. The title is specific and concise, and it names the affected package.

main. These changes directly support issue#1056. No unrelated change is shown.

Explanation
Issue
#1056requires a clearer missing-browser-global error and a link tohttps://wxt.dev/guide/go-further/entrypoint-loaders.html. The implementation adds the entrypoint path, Node.js guidance, and the original error ascause. The tests cover prepare, build, dependency imports, unrelated failures, and browser access insidemain. However, the implementation and tests usehttps://wxt.dev/guide/essentials/config/entrypoint-loaders, not the URL required by issue#1056.Resolution
Use the documentation URL required by issue
#1056in the error message and update the diagnostic test assertion.

Make the browser API advice conditional.
importEntrypoints applies this message to every matching ReferenceError. A misspelled identifier can also produce identifier is not defined, so the message can incorrectly advise moving a non-browser API call into main. Keep the entrypoint path and original cause, but qualify the browser API advice.

…er APIs - Change message from prescriptive 'so browser API calls should be inside' to conditional 'If calling a browser API, move it inside' - Add e2e test case for typos/undefined variables to verify they get helpful but not misleading advice - Update existing test assertions to match new message format This addresses CodeRabbit feedback that typos throw the same error but should not get browser-specific advice. The new wording is more helpful for both cases.

Overview
When an entrypoint uses an unavailable browser global outside its main function, preparation and builds fail with a bare ReferenceError. Include the entrypoint path, explain the build-time Node.js environment and link the entrypoint loader documentation so the error points to a solution.
The original error and stack are retained as the cause. Unrelated failures, including other ReferenceErrors, are rethrown unchanged.
Manual Testing
Add
new MutationObserver(() => {});above a content script definition, then runwxt prepareor build. The error includes the entrypoint path, guidance to move browser API calls intomain, and the documentation link. Moving the browser call insidemainallows preparation and builds to succeed.Local validation on macOS:
bun run test run e2e/tests/entrypoint-errors.test.ts --maxWorkers=2frompackages/wxt: all nine cases pass. Five diagnostic cases fail against the original importer.main.Related Issue
