Threads: offset screw-swept walls from their procedural definitions (#2724) - #2726
Draft checkpoint: implementation is incomplete and is not ready to merge.
The full M20 Offset Face acceptance matrix has not passed on this construction.
The global groove-closure limit and refusal naming the largest offset are not implemented.
This follows the maintainer's direction on closed#2613 and the architecture chosen in #2572.
The mathematical direction is settled. The integration and acceptance work remain incomplete.
Units: surface.procedural_sweep, offset, sweep.screw, record, conversion, and tessellation adapters.
Implemented in this checkpoint
Retain the affine source and signed offset along the true 3D normal.
Certify the fitted section and wall against the exact definition.
Join common-screw walls from section crossings and lift the crossings to helices.
Construct paired UV curves for common-screw and coaxial-cylinder joins.
Preserve paired trims across support extensions with unchanged screw parameters.
Consolidate screw flanks without refitting the existing NURBS spans.
Carry plain-data definitions through record conversion and exact evaluation adapters.
Recompute certificates when restoring records or attaching an existing net.
Route screw evaluation through the existing NetScope contract.
Keep lifted screw intersection curves exact under an outer approximation scope.
Preserve existing dispatch for general paths and varying radial laws.
The seven defect records carried from #2613 are WR-744–748, WR-750 and WR-752.
The corner-cut record moved from WR-749 to WR-752 after #2733 used WR-749 on main.
The allocation was checked against main a87b011 and other open-PR WR records, including #2735’s WR-751.
The former general NURBS offset corrections are not transplanted into this construction.
Validation
cargo +1.98.0 fmt --all: passed.
Record-ID checker and its ten existing unit tests pass. Main plus the seven new records has no ID collisions.
Strict library Clippy passed for solidcore, solidcore-record, solidcore-convert, and solidcore-tess in the difftest profile.
Six initial native section tests passed before later adapter integration.
Fifteen screw-sweep checks passed before the latest generic evaluation changes.
Six current certificate-helper tests passed in an isolated Rust harness.
Current isolated section probes checked paired wall-wall and cylinder mappings against exact definition evaluators.
They do not validate the latest native CurveOnSurf dispatch or Offset Face topology.
Latest-source native integration tests, full workspace Clippy, and wasm checks remain pending.
Required before ready
Native tests for the latest evaluation, record, continuation, and intersection adapters.
Complete physical rounding bounds for extreme paired-UV parameter maps, or refuse maps exceeding the budget.
Both wall-wall and cylinder mappings need a conditioning term for large UV translations or small scales.
Paired non-isoparametric trim checks, including continuation endpoints and evaluation sides.
The twelve M20x2.5 cases: external/internal, segmented/continuous, both signs, flanks/all lateral faces.
Closed manifold results, strict Level2 validity, and helix membership on both neighboring walls.
Global section-ordering events and a groove-closing refusal that names the largest supported offset.
SolidCraft integration with retained definitions on new and saved thread layouts.
Save/reopen acceptance and new visual evidence from the replacement construction.
Related PRs and dependencies
#2633 is merged. This branch builds on #2723's published motion interface at c7705d7,
and #2671's bounded, fallible conversion APIs. #2723 has merged; #2671 remains an unmerged dependency. The full rebase onto current main remains pending.
Their commits remain attributed to their authors.
The #2723 contributor owns Motion::Path, path.rs, and Path record fields.
This PR owns screw-offset sections, the offset field, and dispatch inside the Screw arms.
SolidCraft #11737 independently consolidates thread faces and preserves legacy saved references.
SolidCraft #11776 remains draft and on hold for the replacement integration into #11582.
Status: published WIP for early maintainer review. Further topology and groove-limit implementation is held at this checkpoint.
Early review should confirm the generic evaluation wiring and certified-net attachment boundary before that work continues.

This draft changes offset and save behavior for swept geometry. As written, offsets of threads with curved profile segments fail, pipe and curve-sweep bodies can fail to save, and a test file does not compile. These should be fixed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0b01f
The new saved-geometry contract has meaningful validation and re-certification controls. No introduced security flaw was established in the inspected paths, but production exposure to untrusted inputs and whole-operation resource containment remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The evidenced security-relevant exposure is caller-supplied geometry entering an in-process library through record conversion or construction APIs. Resource exhaustion would affect the hosting process, but remote reachability, tenant sharing, execution privileges, and production isolation were not established. No broader independently attackable scope is supported.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Native decoding provides a bounded ingestion API: it checks byte limits, parses with a value budget, checks the value tree, deserializes, and validates the saved B-rep before returning. This is a concrete control, but the inspected evidence does not show that every production ingestion caller uses it.
observed — Portable structural validation and runtime geometric certification enforce different controls. The portable checker accounts for record collections and rejects invalid numeric metadata, station order, and singular maps; reconstruction independently checks and certifies the geometry before attaching it.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Path certification limits adaptive subdivision depth and cell splitting. Those controls are not a demonstrated whole-operation resource boundary: initial cuts and column data are input-dependent, and the routine continues processing cuts after further splitting is disabled. This is a containment limitation, not a verified denial-of-service attack.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — For deployments accepting untrusted geometry, make bounded decoding and structural validation an explicit ingestion contract, and apply request-level memory, work, and cancellation budgets around construction and certification. Establish production caller and isolation evidence before treating local algorithm limits as protection for shared workers.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #2724 has coding requirements that this PR does not meet.
Implemented at head 0b01fd0 (from the PR summary, not yet proven by full native runs):
Offset of screw walls as a ProceduralSweep: screw_offset.rs (ScrewOffsetSection), procedural_sweep/offset.rs and offset_profile.rs, dispatch in offset_executive/p1.rs and surface/surface/p1.rs.
Neighbour-wall join at the helix from the 2D section crossing: offset/procedural_screw.rs and procedural_screw/cylinder.rs.
Consolidated multi-turn screw walls: sweep/screw.rs (screw_wall joins station pieces).
Definition survives record conversion: procedural_sweep/record.rs, solidcore-record sweep.rs, solidcore-convert sweep.rs.
Three new offset tests in tests/screw_sweep.rs.
Unmet or unproven requirements from #2724:
Groove-closure refusal naming the largest fitting offset is not implemented. The PR description states this explicitly.
The twelve M20x2.5 acceptance cases (external/internal, segmented/continuous, both signs, flanks/all lateral faces) have not passed. The PR states the full matrix has not passed.
Closed manifold and strict Level 2 validity for those results are not shown.
Helix membership on both neighbouring walls, and the match to the 2D crossing, are shown only by isolated section probes. The PR states the latest native CurveOnSurf dispatch and Offset Face topology are not validated.
Points at off-net parameters within the certified bound are not shown for the M20 solids.
SolidCraft retention of the definition on new and saved layouts is pending.
Closed issue #2613 is historical context only and adds no requirements.
Resolution
Implement the global groove-closure check. Refuse an offset that closes a groove, and name the largest offset that fits, as #2724 requires.
Run all twelve M20x2.5 cases on the latest source. Each case must produce ProceduralSweep offset walls, closed manifold results, and strict Level 2 valid solids.
Add native tests that check off-net points against the true offset within the certified bound, and check helix membership on both neighbouring walls.
Complete the paired non-isoparametric trim checks and the global section-ordering events named in the PR.
Show the retained definition survives the SolidCraft record and history path, or record that this is outside this PR with a linked follow-up.
Provide native test results for the latest source, including the evaluation, record, continuation, and intersection adapters.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The diff contains a demonstrated change that #2724 does not request.
In scope for #2724: screw-swept walls, their offsets, the screw-image helix joins, and screw record and definition plumbing.
Out of scope or not justified by #2724:
crates/solidcore/src/surface/procedural_sweep/path.rs (new, 854 lines) adds general-path motion (PathMotion, Frame, certified path bound). The file header describes it as #2572 slice 2, "not upstream". #2724 says non-screw faces retain the existing path.
crates/solidcore/src/primitive/primitive_creation/p3/construct.rs attaches a ProceduralSweep definition to unscaled general-path composite sweeps. This changes the surface representation of non-screw faces. #2724 does not request this.
crates/solidcore/tests/general_path_sweep.rs (new, 561 lines) and the path-*.md ledger edits test and document general-path definitions, not screw walls.
Procedural-sweep path support in procedural_sweep.rs (Motion::Path, path transforms) and the general-path bound in the PR's own commit messages.
The PR description does not list general-path definitions among its implemented items. Its only general-path statement is "Preserve existing dispatch for general paths".
Lower-priority items that need justification but do not alone fail this check:
crates/solidcore/src/surface/surf_of_revolution/p1.rs and surface/torus.rs: the diff changes comments only (WR-739 to WR-743). No logic changed. The PR text says WR-743 belongs to #2731, so the label should be checked.
docs/layers.md: a dependency-checker wording change with no stated link to thread offsets.
crates/solidcore/src/blend/fillet_section/recertify.rs (+887 lines): mapped-net certification is shared with blend code. Its link to screw offset certification is not stated.
Resolution
Remove the general-path definition work from this PR, including path.rs, general_path_sweep.rs, the path-*.md ledger edits, the Motion::Path changes, and the construct.rs attachment. Move them to a separate #2572 slice 2 PR.
If the general-path work is needed for screw walls, show the specific dependency in the PR description. Name the screw code path that calls it.
State how recertify.rs mapped-net certification is used by screw offset certification, or move it to the PR that needs it.
Confirm the WR-743 label references, and state whether docs/layers.md is required for the new crate edges.

… certified bound (tangency-labs#2572 slice 2)
ProceduralSweep gets a second motion, the profile carried along a path in the frame the
sweep's projection normal method gives in closed form, with a map from the net's parameter
to the path's. The bound is an enclosure of the net's distance from it: every section of the
net is the profile's control points under one motion in one rational basis, so |B - S| is at
most the largest distance of a control column from its image, bounded cell by cell from
second derivatives. curve_sweep attaches it; translational, scaled and closed sweeps are
ledger entries.

…cy-labs#2723)
Use the contributor-approved Motion::Screw/Path split. General-path sweep construction remains owned by tangency-labs#2723; this branch will implement screw-only normal offsets.
Co-Authored-By: Codex <[email protected]>
@bendavis a numbering heads-up before you carry #2613's records over: WR-742 is taken on main (#2710, the nearly flat cone), and #2731 is moving the iso-circle record to WR-743 because WR-739 was used twice. So the WR-742 to WR-748 records from #2613 need fresh IDs when they land here, taken from main's next free number at that point. check_record_ids in ci-scripts will catch any collision.
Build normal-offset sections from the screw wall's true 3D normal.
Carry the original source, parameter map, fit and certificate through raw
records. Use section crossings for common-screw joins and coaxial cylinder
joins, retaining paired UV curves across support swaps. Consolidate screw
flanks without refitting their existing net spans.
The kernel, record, conversion and tessellation libraries pass strict
Clippy in the difftest profile. Earlier primitive tests and isolated
section probes passed. The latest native integration, the full M20
Offset Face matrix, and groove-closure maximum remain unverified or
unfinished. This is a draft checkpoint for review, not a completed fix.

Include the already-merged ID-only correction from upstream commit
a48605d (tangency-labs#2731), so the inherited
iso-circle record collision also clears. Its Rust changes are comments
only; no geometry implementation changes.
The record-ID checker passes on this branch and on main's record set plus
our seven records. Its ten existing unit tests and git diff --check pass.

Move our unmerged corner-cut report to WR-752 and update its reference

The record-ID checker passes. The seven owned WR records do not collide

other record text changes.

Guard the cone dispatch with the exact cylinder construction class.
The dispatch sends every procedural sweep paired with a Cone to cylinder::intersect. When screw_offset_section() returns None, cylinder::intersect returns an error instead of declining the specialized path. This can block general SSI for sweeps without a screw, varying radial laws, and non-affine source profiles.
Check the exact invariant affine section before dispatch, so unsupported classes return Ok(None) and reach the general intersector.

Send only screw definitions to the procedural-sweep record; general-path walls must still export as their net.
Surface::procedural_sweep() returns Some for path motions too. create_curve_sweep and create_pipe_sweep now attach a Motion::Path definition to their walls (construct.rs Lines 486-495). For such a wall, this branch calls to_record. to_record returns SolidError::Unsupported ("a general-path sweep has no screw-definition record"), and the ? here passes that error up.
The result is that solidcore_convert::brep::to_record fails on any body with a pipe or general curve-sweep wall. Before this change, the same body was saved as its B-spline net. This is a save/export regression on an ordinary modelling path.
Take this branch only for a screw definition. Let path walls fall through to the existing B-spline path.

Update the `procedural_sweep()` branch in `face_surface` to serialize
procedurally only when the sweep definition is a screw; let `Motion::Path` walls
continue through the existing B-spline export path. Add a regression test that
calls `to_record` on a `create_pipe_sweep` using `line_path()` and verifies it
succeeds.

Re-check the widened half against MAX_HALF_ANGLE.
create checks the input half, then widens it to the largest station span. The stored value is not checked again. A direct call with a narrow half and a wider station span stores a half above MAX_HALF_ANGLE. certify still returns Ok for halves up to about 0.927 rad, because lift_error_bound rejects only tau above 0.5. The production screw_net path and from_record already reject such spans before or at create, so this is limited to direct internal callers.
Keep the input check. Add a check after the fold:

In create, keep the existing input half validation and validate the widened half
after the stations.windows(2) fold against MAX_HALF_ANGLE. Return the
established invalid-input error if the widened value exceeds the limit, so
direct callers cannot store an out-of-range half.

Do not route non-affine screw walls to normal_offset.
is_screw_invariant() checks only that the motion is a screw with a constant radial law. It does not check that the profile is a straight line. crate::sweep::screw::sweep attaches a ProceduralSweep definition to every non-cylinder wall. This includes arc and spline profile curves, for example a rounded thread root.
For such a wall, normal_offset calls offset_support. screw_offset_section() then returns Ok(None) (affine_source rejects degree ≠ 1), and the call fails with "normal offsets require an invariant affine screw section". Before this change, the wall used base_create_offset_surface, which returns an OffsetSurface. Offsetting any screw sweep with a curved profile segment now fails.
OffsetExecutive::get_create_extended_surface (offset_executive/p1.rs lines 856-864) has the same root cause. Its extension now errors instead of using the ruled default.
The PR states that existing dispatch is preserved for classes that are not exactly supported. Make the guard test the exact class that the construction supports. Add a regression test with an arc profile segment.
🐛 Proposed fix
- if let Some(sweep) = self- .procedural_sweep()- .filter(|s| s.definition().is_screw_invariant())- {+ if let Some(sweep) = self.procedural_sweep().filter(|s| {+ s.definition()+ .screw_offset_section()+ .is_ok_and(|section| section.is_some())+ }) {
Apply the same filter in get_create_extended_surface. Alternatively, add ProceduralSweep::has_exact_screw_section() and use it at both call sites.

Update the procedural-sweep dispatch before `normal_offset` to require an exact
supported affine screw section, rather than relying only on
`is_screw_invariant()`, so curved-profile sweeps retain the existing default
offset behavior. Apply the same eligibility check in
`get_create_extended_surface` and add a regression test covering an arc profile
segment.

- **Trigger:** an eight-turn rational ruled sheet with four non-isoparametric trim lines, bounded radially near `[.2,.8]`. Its replacement offset support is first restricted to `[.25,.75]` in the linear radial direction. Exact extension is therefore needed to retain the face, and preserving paired UV curves cannot restore that smaller original support. Both signed offsets, -.1 and +.1, return a sheet but fail the strict support self-intersection check without final trimming. This construction uses native rational control nets and curve-on-surface trims, not a screw sweep or imported fixture.
- **How found:** SolidCraft #11582, then reduced to a synthetic native surface in the existing `issue_2048_check_offset_surface_face` integration test. The original modeled M20 offset has 32 such failures; exact trimming of its returned body's unused supports makes every level-2 check pass without changing flags or validation.
- **Confirmed:** in the Rust implementation by the native regression and an independently decoded operation result. Not run against the C++ reference; no C++ numerical result is claimed.
- **Correction:** the completed extended-offset construction runs the existing exact `ShrinkGeometry` once on the completed extended-offset result, after all topology edits and before returning it. It recalculates bounds from the final trims, restricts the supporting surfaces and edge curves, and preserves entity identities and retained geometry. Errors propagate. The self-intersection checker is unchanged; genuine crossings within the retained support remain subject to it.

Correct the status and scope of WR-744, WR-745, and WR-746.
The code does not add the corrections described in these records. do_extended_offset returns without the final ShrinkGeometry call. local_operation still compares normals at unrelated domain midpoints. mate_edges still ranks candidates by parameter midpoints.

Build thread-clearance offsets from the exact screw-sweep definition.
Fixes #2724.
Draft checkpoint: implementation is incomplete and is not ready to merge.
The full M20 Offset Face acceptance matrix has not passed on this construction.
The global groove-closure limit and refusal naming the largest offset are not implemented.
This follows the maintainer's direction on closed #2613 and the architecture chosen in #2572.
The mathematical direction is settled. The integration and acceptance work remain incomplete.
Units: surface.procedural_sweep, offset, sweep.screw, record, conversion, and tessellation adapters.
Implemented in this checkpoint
The seven defect records carried from #2613 are WR-744–748, WR-750 and WR-752.
The corner-cut record moved from WR-749 to WR-752 after #2733 used WR-749 on main.
The allocation was checked against main a87b011 and other open-PR WR records, including #2735’s WR-751.
The former general NURBS offset corrections are not transplanted into this construction.
Validation
cargo +1.98.0 fmt --all: passed. They do not validate the latest native CurveOnSurf dispatch or Offset Face topology.
Latest-source native integration tests, full workspace Clippy, and wasm checks remain pending.
Required before ready
Both wall-wall and cylinder mappings need a conditioning term for large UV translations or small scales.
