chore: retire the dead offset_extends_cones_as_themselves and offset_extends_ball_patches_as_themselves flags (WR-532, WR-728) - #2825
Machine-generated (Claude Opus 5.5 agent) on behalf of @zorak1103.
Part of #2730 (the follow-through of #2797's exact extension). Retires two UpstreamFixes flags that #2797 left dead.
#2797 made the exact surface extension the only one: get_create_extended_surface extends a cone, cylinder or ball patch as itself on every path. That was all offset_extends_cones_as_themselves (WR-532) and offset_extends_ball_patches_as_themselves (WR-728, #2484) did, so on main (d93a19b) neither field is read anywhere in crates/solidcore/src. AGENTS.md §4b: no dead flags.
Units: offset.offset_executive_p1 (doc only), surface.ball_patch (header only); no code path changes
In scope: delete the two fields; their preset entry; every test line or name list that sets them; stale doc comments
Expected edits: crates/solidcore/src/kernel.rs, offset/offset_executive/p1.rs, surface/ball_patch.rs,
tests/kernel_cases/fixes.json, tests/{issue_1061,issue_1945,issue_2020,issue_2260,issue_2484,issue_2656,wr650,wr_532}*.rs
Evidence: no read of either flag in src on main; tests below; nothing can move (no branch reads them)
Related PRs / dependencies: #2797 (merged; made the flags dead), #2738 (draft, curve extension; does not touch these flags)
Available follow-ups: none from this PR
Status / blockers / next step: verified locally; ready for review
What changes
No result changes: no code path reads either flag. Removing the fields only stops callers from naming them.
wr_532_shell_rounds_stay_on_radius used to set the flag on a default kernel. It now runs on plain Kernel::default() and still asserts every cylinder keeps its round's radius to 1e-12.
issue_2484's "without the fix" test (all fixes but this flag) is deleted. With the flag gone it was the same kernel as every_inner_corner_stays_a_ball_patch_on_its_sphere, which stays.
I tried moving it to Kernel::default(), but it fails there for a reason the extension never reaches: the default shell of this box has no inner corner face at all (corner 0: 0 faces). A probe found the cause: on the default kernel the shell returns Ok with 6 Bad Vertex Gap lines and a volume that cannot be integrated. That is reported, with measurements, in Shell on the default kernel: a rounded box (#2484's case) shells to a body with vertex gaps and no integrable volume, reported Ok #2834.
surface/ball_patch.rs header: a ball patch is extended as a ball patch only when it has its pole (a side collapsed to a point). Without one, ball_extended_sides returns None and the patch takes the generic ruled extension. The header no longer says "always".
The preset (kernel_cases/fixes.json) and the name lists in issue_2260/issue_2656 drop the names. flag_mut panics on an unknown name, so they have to.
Evidence
Base: d93a19bd4 (still origin/main at push, so no rebase was needed). Every name is gone from the tree outside plan/: git grep finds only the explanatory comment in issue_2656.
No difftest was run: nothing a unit executes changes.
cargo fmt --all --check fails on main itself, in five files of crates/diagnostics (from #2813). This PR does not touch them.
Not run locally: the full integration suite (cargo test -p solidcore, all test binaries). CI runs it.
Notes for review
SolidCraft follow-up: SolidCraft's fixes() list probably still names offset_extends_cones_as_themselves (and, since its #11875 bump, offset_extends_ball_patches_as_themselves). flag_mut returns None for them after this. Drop them from that list when bumping.
Merged records (plan/upstream-issues/WR-532…, WR-728…) still describe the opt-in. They are not edited (§3d).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Offset extensions now preserve cylinders and ball patches with a pole, keeping spherical patches on the same sphere. Ball patches without a pole use a generic ruled extension.
Updated regression tests to reflect the default extension behavior.
…extends_ball_patches_as_themselves flags (WR-532, WR-728)
The exact surface extension (tangency-labs#2797) extends cones and ball patches as
themselves on every path, so neither flag is read any more. Remove the
fields, the preset entry and every test that names them; the WR-532 and
tangency-labs#2484 tests now pin the behaviour on Kernel::default().

Walkthrough
The change removes two offset-extension fields from UpstreamFixes. It updates extension documentation and test setups to describe or use exact extension without those fields.

Summary
Extension contract and documentation crates/solidcore/src/kernel.rs, crates/solidcore/src/offset/offset_executive/p1.rs, crates/solidcore/src/surface/ball_patch.rs
The two offset-extension fields are removed from UpstreamFixes. Documentation describes the extension behavior for cylinders and ball patches.
Regression test updates crates/solidcore/tests/issue_*.rs, crates/solidcore/tests/kernel_cases/fixes.json, crates/solidcore/tests/wr650_tabbed_plate_mitred_rounds.rs, crates/solidcore/tests/wr_532_shell_rounds_stay_on_radius.rs
Test presets and helpers no longer set the removed flags. The ball-patch test that disabled its flag and checked spherical corners is removed.
tangency-labs/solidcore#2730 — The issue covers migrating callers from fitted extension to exact extension, which this change documents and reflects in test setups.
Possibly related PRs
tangency-labs/solidcore#2797 — That PR changed get_create_extended_surface to use exact extension; this change removes the remaining flags and updates test setups to match.
tangency-labs/solidcore#2726 — That PR continues the exact surface-extension implementation used by the API whose flags this change retires.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2b08f
The retired flags are removed, and the documented ball-patch behavior is qualified correctly. No merge-blocking issue was established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 2b08f
Surface-extension behavior is unchanged. The main risk is upgrade compatibility: applications that still name the removed options must update their configuration. The inspected configuration setter rejects obsolete names before applying settings.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The inspected change does not establish an expanded attacker-controlled execution path through OffsetExecutive. Its routed public-entrypoint changes are documentation-only, and the retired flags already had no runtime reads in solidcore production source at the comparison base. This conclusion is limited to the inspected change, not a comprehensive security assessment of callers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The session holds process-global fix configuration and a kernel behind mutexes. set_fixes validates the complete name list into a local value before writing either shared setting. A removed-name rejection therefore performs no shared configuration write in that invocation, rather than partially applying the list.

…patch header names the poled case
Review: with the flag gone the test equalled every_inner_corner_stays_a_ball_patch_on_its_sphere,
and on Kernel::default() the shell has no inner corner faces for reasons the extension does not
reach. A ball patch without a collapsed side takes the generic ruled extension, so the header no
longer says "always".

Qualify the ball-patch guarantee.
A ball patch without a collapsed side falls back to ruled extension. That path can return a plain B-spline instead of a patch on the sphere. Limit this guarantee to patches with a pole. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A ball patch without a pole takes the generic ruled extension
(ball_extended_sides returns None), as the ball_patch.rs header
already says. Raised by review on tangency-labs#2825.

CodeRabbit, p1.rs:729 (qualify the ball-patch guarantee): done in 2b08f1f. The get_create_extended_surface doc now says that a ball patch is extended as a ball patch on the same sphere only when it has its pole (a side collapsed to a point). One without a pole takes the generic ruled extension (ball_extended_sides returns None). This matches the surface/ball_patch.rs header that this PR already changed. Doc only; no code path changes. cargo fmt -p solidcore -- --check passes.
