test: a panic fuzz of the public entry points (#2490, slice 1) - #2525
Slice 1 of #2490 (ask 2), as proposed in the plan comment: a panic fuzz of the public entry points. Tests only; no library code changes.
What it does
Each case is a short program built from a splitmix64 seed: one to three body-making steps, then one to three operations, some on earlier results.
Inputs are hostile: NaN, ±inf, ±0, negatives, subnormals, 1e300 and f64::MAX, tiny sizes; coincident, collinear, bow-tie and empty profiles; zero-length and NaN directions.
Each case runs on its own thread under catch_unwind. A panic hook records the message and location, and for a panic inside std, the innermost frame in this workspace. Err results are fine: the test fails only on a panic, listing each distinct location with a reproducing seed and the full input.
A case still running at the time limit is cancelled through its kernel's CancelToken and printed as a hang. It does not fail the test by default, so the verdict never depends on the machine's speed. SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_HANGS=fail makes hangs fail too.
fillets and chamfers (the edge, per-edge, variable, circular, chamfer and preview entry points, which drive FilletSession);
offset and shell;
transforms;
analysis (check_brep at all levels, mass properties, volume, tessellate_boundaries, about 15 queries);
native files (written, mutated, read back, in ASCII and binary).
crates/step-brep/tests/panic_fuzz.rs:
step_import::import and step_brep::import_with_report_options in every build mode, then re-export;
flat::decode, on repository STEP fixtures mutated (truncation, bit flips, NaN/INF/1E999 and 2^64-sized counts, broken references, dropped or repeated lines, swapped entity names, deep nesting).
Not yet covered: calls that need more caller setup. These are body-to-body distance and relationship, find_faces, boolean_lists/boolean_trees, the non-manifold sweeps, sweeps and skins from faces or edges, surface_surface_fillet, create_blend_primitive, helix, heal/stitch and read_part_from_file. They can follow.
Settings
Variables: SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_CASES (cases per family), _SEED, _HANG_SECS (default 60 s in debug, 5 s optimised), _HANGS=fail, and _REPRO=<family>:<seed> (one case, with its input printed).
The default (CI) run is a fixed seed set: about 50 s in a debug cargo test for both files on a loaded 6-core machine.
Results (Myy, at this branch's base on main)

The only other findings were 41 cases over the time limit on a busy machine. Run alone:
38 finished within 300 s (1–135 s), and one blend case finished in 382 s, so they are slow, not hung.
One is still running at 600 s: SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_REPRO=booleans:11053777690231679143. Its input is a swung arc with sweep angle f64::MAX, an offset profile with a point at z = -1e300, a piecewise_merge of it with itself, and then a boolean. That is a hang, not a panic. It belongs to its own follow-up (an unconditional fix under §4b), not to this PR.
So on these inputs the library already returns errors rather than panicking; the clippy denies and the earlier fuzz fixes hold. This harness keeps it so: a new reachable panic in a covered entry point fails CI with its seed.
Next, per the plan: the inventory of the remaining panic-prone call sites the lints don't see (slice 2), waiting for the answer on #2490.

Walkthrough
The changes add a deterministic, seed-driven panic-fuzz harness and tests for Solidcore kernel operations, STEP imports, and flat decoding. The harness captures panic findings and supports configurable case counts, reproduction seeds, time limits, and hang reporting.

Review comments at @crates/solidcore/tests/panic_fuzz.rs:
- Around line 10-12: Update the module documentation near the panic-fuzz test to
state that cases exceeding the hang limit are printed by default and fail the
test only when SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_HANGS=fail; keep the existing description of
panic reporting.
Review comments at @crates/solidcore/tests/support/panic_fuzz.rs:
- Around line 141-147: Update the SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_REPRO parsing in the test
support logic so malformed specs fail immediately instead of silently skipping
all families or running the full seed set. Panic when the spec lacks the
family/seed separator or when the seed for the matching family cannot be parsed;
preserve skipping for valid specs targeting another family and the existing
behavior when the variable is unset.
- Around line 371-381: Update the eight-hang cutoff in the panic-fuzz loop so
stopping before all seeds are processed cannot produce a passing test. Record
the truncated run through the existing findings mechanism before breaking, using
the visible findings and Finding symbols and including enough context to
identify the family and skipped cases.
- Around line 284-286: Update the outcome handling around F::run to take
LAST_PANIC after either result and classify the run as Panicked whenever a panic
was recorded, including when F::run returns normally. Preserve the existing
fallback that captures an unwind payload when no panic was recorded, and
classify only a normal return with no recorded panic as Done.
Review comments at @crates/step-brep/tests/panic_fuzz.rs:
- Around line 267-273: Update the Edit::Entity token search to begin only at an
entity name immediately following a #id= definition, rather than any uppercase
byte. Add an assertion that the selected range starts at an entity name so the
test detects regressions in token selection.

- the module doc states that hangs are report-only unless SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_HANGS=fail;
- a malformed SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_REPRO is an error, not a silent skip or CI run;
- a panic library code catches is a finding (it aborts under the web build's panic=abort);
- every seed runs: no stop after 8 hangs; the summary counts threads left running;
- the STEP Edit::Entity mutation lands on the entity name of a #<id>= definition.
…ects a malformed count
The fuzz passed Brep clones to every operation. A clone's surfaces have no owner
(tangency-labs#2715), so the operations saw a degraded body: a booleans case that takes 1.9 s in
release on a real copy took 0.1 s on the clone. Operation, edit and save steps now take
a brep_copy, and the read-only steps take clone_standing_for_self. A failed copy skips
the step. SOLIDCORE_PANIC_FUZZ_CASES and the other numeric settings panic on a value
that is not a u64 instead of falling back to the CI count.
