What and why

On main, many commands read their on/off params with bool_or or as_bool and their optional numbers with f64_or or as_f64, which read a value of the wrong JSON type as the key left out. The call then reports success: artboard.rearrange {"moveArtwork": "false"} moves the art with the artboards, object.scale {"sx": 200, "strokes": "false"} scales the stroke with Scale Strokes & Effects on, path.reshapeSegment {"dy": "10"} bends the segment by 0, and object.liquify {"tool": "warp", "diameter": "40", ...} uses the default 100 pt brush.

These commands now fail with "<key> must be true or false" or "<key> must be a number, not " for such a value. The document and the undo history stay as they were. A null is read as a key left out.

  • Object menu: object.transformEach, createObjectMosaic, cropImage, createTrimMarks and artboard.rearrange refuse their on/off keys given as text. object.createTrimMarks also refuses a style that is not a string with "style must be roman or japanese".
  • Paths: the anchor editing and drawing commands refuse their optional numbers given as text. path.convertAnchor refuses an x without a y, or a y without an x, with "x and y must be given together". The drawing commands refuse a point whose x or y is not a number, those that take a pen pressure refuse one that is neither a number nor null, and path.close refuses an in that is not [x, y].
  • Transform, Align, Object Properties and Live Shape Properties: the nine transform commands refuse copy, strokes, corners, patterns, objects, typeAreas and their own on/off keys given as text, Align and Distribute refuse patterns, and object.setProps and object.setLiveShape refuse their on/off keys.
  • Blends and envelopes: smooth, independent, perpendicular, horizontal (also beside an orientation), maintainShape, the four Envelope Options switches and editing.
  • Perspective, width points, Liquify and Puppet Warp: their on/off keys, and the numbers of object.liquify, object.puppetWarp, object.puppetWarp.pins, perspective.transform, perspective.nudge and perspective.plane.move. object.puppetWarp refuses an angles entry that is not a number or null, stroke.widthProfile.set refuses a point that is not three numbers, and perspective.draw refuses an at that is not two numbers with "at must be [x, y]".
  • Perspective grid options: on in Lock Grid, Lock Station Point, Snap to Grid and Show Rulers, and replace in perspective.presets.import. A null on still toggles the option.
  • Paint: keepModel in the commands that store a color, fill in paint.toggleActive, stroke in Invert, Complement, Apply Last Color and Apply Last Gradient, focus in paint.setFill and paint.setStroke, and none in the commands that take a paint. paint.setFill {"none": "true"} gets the true-or-false message instead of "give color, none, swatch or gradient".

crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs holds the readers, beside bool_or: switch_or(p, key, default, cmd) -> Result<bool> and check_switches for on/off keys, and number_or(p, key, default, cmd) -> Result<f64> for numbers, which check_numbers now calls for each key. A command that reads a number as an Option, or checks it before another check that can fail, keeps an up-front check_numbers. docs/mcp.md lists the keys of all but the paint and perspective grid option commands, and docs/target-app-parity.md lists the changes. The change adds no catalog rows.

How it was tested

The 41 tests of those pull requests are kept as they were, in tests.rs, tests_menucmds.rs, tests_draw2.rs, tests_blendspine.rs, tests_live.rs, tests_livecorners.rs, tests_distort.rs, tests_perspgrid.rs, tests_paintproxy.rs, tests_eyedropper.rs, tests_brushsym.rs and tests_swatchcmds.rs. Each fails on main, where the first call succeeds.

Targeted checks while building: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib (2,753 passed); cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at cb0a7d9:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,830 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at cb0a7d9. #3292 and #3283 conflict with this branch in crates/engine/src/cmd/path.rs, as they do with #3266, and #3292 also in docs/mcp.md, as it does with #3262. The conflicts with main of the other open pull requests that change these files are the same with or without this branch.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Commands now reject invalid boolean, numeric, coordinate, pressure, angle, and style values instead of silently applying defaults.
    • Invalid requests leave artwork, selections, document state, and undo history unchanged.
    • Paint, text, gradient, swatch, live-paint, mesh, perspective, transform, path, and distortion operations now validate optional settings consistently.
    • Missing or null optional values continue to use established defaults where supported.
  • Documentation

    • Updated command documentation to describe stricter validation, accepted values, and new error conditions.

📝 Walkthrough

Command handlers now reject malformed boolean, numeric, coordinate, and paint-model parameters instead of silently applying defaults or filtering invalid values. Regression tests and documentation cover the updated validation and null-default behavior.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddfaa

Transform Each can silently use defaults for incorrectly typed options, and the parity document needs its required tracking updates. These are bounded issues, but both should be fixed before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddfaa

Stricter validation reduces unintended edits without adding command privileges. However, commands with explicit targets can change selection and discard existing Puppet Warp pins before reporting invalid parameters. This is a bounded editing-state failure, not demonstrated unauthorized access.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: New parameter-rejection paths are not atomic with explicit-target selection. For example, object.scale with valid ids and sx but strokes supplied as text first selects those ids, then returns BadParams. If that changes the selection away from objects with Puppet Warp pins, selection handling clears those pins and may change the active layer. These effects survive the error because ordinary Result errors do not trigger command-level snapshot restoration. The wrapper predates this PR, but newly rejected switches now expose this partial-state outcome on calls that previously succeeded. This undermines failure containment and makes subsequent selection-based commands operate on unexpectedly changed session state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified partial-state path requires access to normal command execution and valid object targets. Its demonstrated scope is the active document's selection, active layer and Puppet Warp editing state; it does not establish cross-user, cross-service or additional filesystem authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Session execution resolves an existing command specification and checks enablement before invoking the handler. Strict readers consume supplied JSON without acquiring credentials or invoking external services. The inspected change therefore narrows input interpretation within the existing command boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Handler-local validation alone cannot guarantee rejected-command isolation when the dispatcher performs stateful preparation first. Because ordinary errors preserve that preparation, a caller cannot safely infer unchanged selection or editing state solely from BadParams.

Add a revision-history row and update the status line for this change.

This PR edits docs/target-app-parity.md at lines 571, 739–749 and 881–882. The revision history table is unchanged: its newest row is dated 2026-10-20 and does not describe this work. The status line is not in the changed ranges either.

Add a minor row to the table that summarizes the strict parameter validation. State that scores and hours are unchanged. Update the status line.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

object.transformEach still accepts strokes, corners, objects and patterns as text.

transform_each_as now validates reflectX, reflectY, random and copy. It then calls super::object::scaling, transform_patterns and transforms_objects. These readers use bool_or, so {"strokes": "false"} silently falls back to the preference value. This is the failure class the PR removes for the other transform commands. The params text for this command lists all four keys as bool.

Add a check_switches call for these keys before any mutation. The call may also need an import, depending on the module's imports.

Focused source follow-up at ddfaa4a: the outstanding Transform Each type-validation finding remains a blocker. I traced it through the shared readers and the Transform Again path; the missing validation also persists into recorded/repeated transforms.

[P2] Validate the shared transform switches before recording Transform Each — crates/engine/src/cmd/menucmds.rs:355-366

For a selected stroked object with Scale Strokes & Effects enabled, object.transformEach {"scaleH":200,"scaleV":200,"strokes":"false"} still reaches scaling_options, which reads the string through bool_or as the enabled preference. It scales the stroke, commits an undo step, and saves the original malformed params as LastTransform::Each. object.transformAgain subsequently re-enters transform_each_as with that same string and repeats the unintended operation. This is more than an inconsistent error message: the rejected-input/no-history-change contract documented by this PR is violated, and the malformed call remains repeatable.

Please validate strokes, corners, objects and patterns in transform_each_as before the readers or journal/edit work. Add a regression with a real stroked object that asserts the string-valued call fails and preserves document bytes, undo history and the previous repeat transform; retain the corresponding valid-boolean and null cases. The shared helper is also used by the Transform effect, so cover that entry point according to its documented parameter contract.

This supplies the repeat-state consequence and regression boundary for the existing inline finding rather than duplicating its inline comment. I have not completed an approval review of all remaining command/test changes, and no PR code was executed locally.
