What and why

On main, Lock Grid, Lock Station Point, Snap to Grid and Show Rulers read their on param with as_bool, and Import Perspective Grid Presets reads replace with bool_or. Both treat a value that is not true or false as if the key were left out. perspective.grid.lock {"on": "true"} unlocks a locked grid, because a missing on toggles the option, and perspective.presets.import {"replace": "true"} adds the presets under numbered names instead of replacing the saved presets of the same names. Each call reports success. The reference app's perspective grid page lists Show Rulers, Snap to Grid, Lock Grid and Lock Station Point under View > Perspective Grid, and says "Follow the steps to edit, remove, import, or export presets you've created" (Create and edit perspective grid).

  • perspective.grid.lock, perspective.grid.lockStation, perspective.grid.snap and perspective.grid.rulers (on) and perspective.presets.import (replace) fail with "<key> must be true or false" for a value that is not true, false or null, the message the Rectangular Grid, Polar Grid and overprint commands give (crates/engine/src/cmd/create.rs:423, overprint.rs:124). The grid, its undo history and the saved presets stay as they were.
  • A null is read as a key left out, so a null on still toggles the option, and with a null replace an imported preset whose name is taken still gets a number.
  • docs/target-app-parity.md has one line for the change. The true-or-false message already has a row in every complete catalog, so the change adds no catalog rows.

How it was tested

New tests in tests_perspgrid (vectorcraft-engine), each failing on main, where the first call given a non-boolean succeeds:

  • view_options_refuse_on_given_as_text gives on to each of the four view options as strings, a number or an array; the grid and the undo history stay as they were, a null on toggles each option, and true or false still sets it.
  • presets_import_refuses_replace_given_as_text gives replace the same values; the saved presets stay as they were, a null replace imports a numbered copy, and true replaces the saved preset.

Targeted checks while building: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib and --test command_sweep; PROPTEST_CASES=20000 cargo test --release -p vectorcraft-engine --test import_fuzz perspective_presets; cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n; cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on top of main at bc1ae08:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,572 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae08. The branch merges cleanly with #3297, which reads the same kind of params in crates/engine/src/cmd/distortcmds.rs, and cargo check -p vectorcraft-engine --tests passes on that merge and with this change applied on #1838's head 0b594ac, which also changes crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Perspective Grid commands now reject invalid non-boolean values with clear errors.
    • Invalid preset import and grid view-option inputs no longer change saved presets, grid settings, or undo history.
    • null and explicit boolean values continue to support toggling and setting options as expected.
  • Documentation

    • Documented accepted values and behavior for Perspective Grid commands and preset imports.

Lock Grid, Lock Station Point, Snap to Grid and Show Rulers read their
on param in a way that treats a value that is not true or false as a
key left out, so they toggled the option: perspective.grid.lock
{"on": "true"} unlocked a locked grid. Import Perspective Grid Presets
read replace the same way, so {"replace": "true"} added the presets
under numbered names instead of replacing the saved presets of the
same names. Each call reported success.

These commands now fail with "`<key>` must be true or false", the
message the Rectangular Grid, Polar Grid and overprint commands give,
for a value that is not true, false or null, and leave the grid, its
undo history and the saved presets as they were. A null is read as a
key left out, so a null on still toggles the option.

📝 Walkthrough

Perspective preset import and grid view-option commands now reject non-boolean parameters. Missing and null values retain their existing behavior. Tests verify invalid values do not change preferences, grid state, or undo history.

Changes: Perspective Grid Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared validation and preset import
crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_perspgrid.rs
A shared helper accepts boolean values and applies the default when a value is missing or null. Preset import now rejects non-boolean replace values. Tests cover errors, unchanged preferences, and existing null and true behavior.
Grid view-option validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_perspgrid.rs, docs/target-app-parity.md
The four grid view-option commands now reject non-boolean on values with command-specific errors. Tests verify invalid values preserve grid state and undo history, and cover null and explicit booleans. Documentation describes the validation.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs: Added the private switch_or helper, which returns the default for missing or null values, accepts only booleans otherwise, and reports a keyed validation error for other values.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs: presets_import now validates replace through strict boolean parsing instead of silently treating non-boolean values as false.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs: Updated view_option to accept the command name, preserve toggling for missing or null on, and reject non-boolean on values with a command-specific error.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/perspgrid.rs: Updated all four view-option callers—grid lock, station lock, snap, and rulers—to provide their command identifiers to the shared validator.

Thanks @dotCooCoo. Refusing a boolean or number given as text is a good robustness fix. However, #3262, #3266, #3289, #3290, #3297, #3302, #3303 and #3319 each add their own copy of the same reader (switch_or, and the number equivalents), so the series would leave eight copies of one rule. Please:

  • put one pub(crate) fn switch_or(p, key, default, cmd) -> Result<bool> (and one strict-number reader) in crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs, beside bool_or;
  • use them at every site;
  • send the series as one PR, so it lands and is reviewed once.
The tests can stay as they are.

Combined into #3428 with the other seven, with one switch_or and one strict-number reader in cmd/mod.rs, as asked.
