The PS1 has no FPU, but the psx target is built hard-float, so string.format's %f/%e/%g path does mtc1/cvt.d.w. On a SCPH-5501 a string.format("%f", 1) probe stops dead there; built -msoft-float it runs to the end. Linking needs the soft-float libgcc, which pcsx-redux/nugget handles on its side.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • PlayStation builds now support floating-point operations on hardware without a floating-point unit, improving compatibility with the original console’s hardware. This change affects how floating-point operations are handled in the build and does not add or remove any user-facing features.

The PS1 has no FPU. string.format converts to double for %f, %e and %g,
and a hard-float build emits mtc1/cvt.d.w there, which stops a real
console dead.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 360b1

The PSX executable may link against the wrong floating-point support library. Pass the flag through the final link before merging, or confirm that the selected library is compatible.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 360b1

The change addresses floating-point formatting on PS1 hardware and does not appear to expand privileges or access to data. The matching runtime link has not been verified here, so the build integration retains some uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
