Previously the website had separate research pages for the different categories (General, Linear Algebra, Quadrature, Optimization, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Other) that were completely separate from each-other. This PR replaces that structure with a single Research page that contains all papers and that allows users to filter papers by tag (eg "ODE); this has also already been requested a long time ago in #6 . Papers can now appear in multiple categories at once, and it also makes it easier to add more categories in the future if we think that would be helpful. And we can also finally see all the PN papers at once.

Here is the result:

Other changes:

  • I tried my best to make the paper entries look cleaner
  • Authors are now "First Last", making them more readable
  • The "Link" button is now called "Paper" (or "arXiv" if it linked to arxiv)
  • All entries have now a "Bibtex" button
  • There is now a single papers.bib instead of separate files

Topics are defined in _data/research_tags.yml, styling moved to _sass/_publications.scss.

Open questions:

  • historical.bib (13 papers) and sampling.bib (1) were never shown before and
still aren't. Should we merge and show them?
  • Should "Related" stay a topic? It's more a kind of paper than a subject.

Disclaimer: This was made with heavy use of AI. I did my best to do this as well as I can and verify changes at each development step, but especially for all the CSS and HTML things I do not have the expertise to fully verify all the source code. But from what I understand it all looks reasonable enough and the result seems like a good improvement to the website.

* Unify research pages into single tag-filterable list

* Remove empty abbreviation column from bibliography layout

* Style per-paper tags as mini-pills and fix tag ID stripping

* Add subtle dividers between bibliography entries

* Tighten vertical spacing between filter bar, year headings, and entries

* Remove tag description feature (only ODEs had one)

* Move paper count inline with filter chip bar

* Refine visual hierarchy: quieter year headings, muted authors/venues, tighter buttons

* Restyle paper links as soft buttons and tags as grey hashtags; move research styles into _sass/_publications.scss

* Drop historical and sampling papers that were not shown on the old research pages

* Show author names as First Last and separate venue and year with a comma

* Add faint underline to linked author names

* Restyle abstract and BibTeX panels; hide site-internal fields from shown BibTeX

* Polish research list: real toggle buttons, focus rings only for keyboard, count wording, align tags on link-less papers

* Delete per-topic bib files now merged into papers.bib (keep historical and sampling for now)

* Replace filter chips with a sticky topic index; show only the most specific tag per paper

* Show BibTeX for every paper; hide reference-manager fields and wrap long lines

* Label paper links as Paper, or arXiv when they point to arxiv.org

* Mobile: collapse the topic list behind a full-width toggle; hide paper hashtags on phones

* Drop the research page intro line (it was never visible on the old site) [ci skip]
