Fixes from the October 2026 audit, plus the follow-ups from an independent review of this branch.

Commits

commit finding what and why
022592b AVCR-001 GitService.execute used to filter shell characters out of every argument, including paths after --. A path such as app/[id]/page.tsx was dropped, so git diff --cached -- with no path returned the whole staged diff. Paths after -- are now passed through as given. Non-strings and NUL bytes are rejected.
4529da8 AVCR-002 The unified export (AI_REVIEW.md) left out every reviewer comment. It now includes file comments and line comments, the same way the per-file export does.
bd3ec1d AVCR-005 (partial) The server listened on all interfaces with no authentication. It now binds 127.0.0.1 by default, and a HOST env var overrides that. The Dockerfile and compose set HOST=0.0.0.0 inside the container, and compose publishes only on 127.0.0.1:3002.
91b58b6 review MAJOR-1, MINOR-4 Paths were still read as glob and magic pathspecs. So the diff for app/[id]/page.tsx also contained app/i/page.tsx and app/d/page.tsx, a*b.txt pulled in aXb.txt, and :/ and :(exclude)x reached git. Git now runs with the global --literal-pathspecs option. Path arguments that start with : (git's magic prefix) are rejected, both in GitService and in the web view's path check. The test fixture now includes sibling names that glob-match each other, plus magic-pathspec cases.
a6ad3e9 review MINOR-1, N2 Line comments were matched with lineId.includes(sanitizedFile), so a.js also got data.js's comments and index.js got src/index.js's. Both generators now use one helper that matches the whole client lineId (<sanitized>_<chunk>_<line>). The test uses the real client format and checks that comments stay with their own file.
ec4d1da review MINOR-2 The web view returned 400 "potential security risk" for app/[id]/page.tsx, and comments on such files failed export validation. With execFile and literal pathspecs, [ ] ( ) { } $ are inert, so they are now allowed. ; & | \ < > ' ", traversal, leading /, `, and the sensitive-path checks stay in place.
0ecb0c6 review MINOR-3 The Docker healthchecks used localhost, which can resolve to ::1 first on node:18-alpine, while the server now binds IPv4 only. Both healthchecks now probe 127.0.0.1.
79edb97 local review P2 The client lineId replaced every non-alphanumeric character with _, so a-b.js and a_b.js (or src/x.js and src_x.js) produced the same id. A comment on one file showed up under both, even when the other file was excluded. Client and server now encode each non-alphanumeric character as _<hex>_, which keeps ids unique per file and is still safe in DOM ids. The test runs the client's own lineIdPrefix() against the server's.

Test evidence (Node v24.21.0, git 2.56.0)

  • npm run build: exit 0 (two placeholder steps, same as base).
  • npm run lint: exit 0, 0 errors, 32 warnings. Base has 31. The extra warning is max-lines-per-function on generateUnifiedReview (109 lines, limit 100).
  • Safe jest run: the 5 suites from SETUP plus git-service-paths, unified-review-comments, bind-host and special-path-web give 9/9 suites and 130/130 tests. Base c4d6472 passes the 5 original suites with 99/99.
  • I checked that every new or strengthened test fails without its fix. With the code reverted and the new tests kept:
    • git-service-paths: 9 of 15 fail.
    • unified-review-comments: 4 of 5 fail.
    • special-path-web plus the new diffService case: 5 fail.
    • The bind-host healthcheck test: 1 fails.
  • I did not run the full npm test. test/link-agent-skills.test.js rewrites tracked .cursor/skills/* symlinks when it runs inside the repo, so it needs a throwaway clone.

Review status

An independent review of the first three commits asked for changes: 1 major, 4 minor, 6 nits. Fixed: the major (MAJOR-1) and all four minors (MINOR-1 to MINOR-4), plus nit N2. Not fixed: nits N1, N3, N4 and N5 (listed below). A local review of the branch raised one more issue (P2, comment ids shared between files), fixed in 79edb97.

Not done

  • Files whose names start with :. These are now rejected rather than diffed (deliberate, as a magic-pathspec guard). Next.js catch-all routes such as pages/[...slug].js are still rejected by the existing .. traversal check.
  • Remote access and Docker. No auth token and no Host-header (DNS-rebinding) check (AVCR-005 / AVCR-030). The Docker image is still not functional (no git, wrong compose working_dir, AVCR-004/006). Docker was not built or run.
  • Other AVCR-001 work. Arguments before -- still use the old character filter. No caller passes user data there.
  • Remaining nits:
    • N1: the bind-host test checks the source text instead of the listening address.
    • N3: app.HOST is exposed only so the test can read it.
    • N4: HOST is not documented, and the startup banner always prints localhost.
    • N5: one lint warning, noted above.
  • The web UI's "Files processed: undefined" text (client side) is not addressed.

Owner decisions and rollout

  • Remote use: decide whether it needs an auth token or a Host allow-list, or should stay loopback-only.
  • Fix Docker or remove it (AVCR-004/006).
  • Rollout: anyone who reached the UI from another machine now needs HOST=0.0.0.0 (or another address). Anyone who has a staged file whose name starts with : will see an error for that file in exports.

Paths after "--" were still read as glob/magic pathspecs, so the diff for
app/[id]/page.tsx also contained app/i/page.tsx and app/d/page.tsx, a*b.txt
pulled in aXb.txt, and ":/" or ":(exclude)x" reached git. GitService now
passes the global --literal-pathspecs option on every command and rejects
path args with a leading ":" (git's magic prefix); the web-view path check
rejects a leading ":" as well. The path test fixture now has glob-matching
siblings (MINOR-4) and magic-pathspec cases.

…rs [review: MINOR-1]

Line comments were selected with lineId.includes(sanitizedFile), so a.js
also received data.js's comments and index.js received src/index.js's.
Both the unified and the per-file generator now use one helper that matches
the whole client lineId (`<sanitized>_<chunk>_<line>`). The test uses the
real client lineId format and asserts isolation between files (N2).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
The web view rejected app/[id]/page.tsx with 400 "potential security risk",
and file comments on such paths failed export validation. Git runs via
execFile with --literal-pathspecs, so these characters are inert; drop them
from isValidFilePath's blocklist (; & | ` < > ' " and the other checks stay).
New supertest suite serves each special path from a temp repo and checks
that only its own diff comes back and that a comment on app/[id]/page.tsx
reaches AI_REVIEW.md.

…w: MINOR-3]

The server now binds 0.0.0.0 (IPv4) in the container. On node:18-alpine,
"localhost" can resolve to ::1 first and Node 18 does not fall back, so the
healthcheck could get ECONNREFUSED and mark the container unhealthy. Use the
IPv4 loopback address in both the Dockerfile and compose healthchecks.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The server now supports configurable host binding, and Docker configuration sets container and host port binding behavior. Git path handling uses literal pathspecs and rejects magic pathspecs. Review exports include file-level and matching line-level comments. Audit documents record repository analysis, findings, and test procedures.

Changes

Host Binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host resolution and binding
services/serverUrl.js, server.js, bin/ai-review.js, Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml, test/bind-host.test.js
The server resolves HOST with a default of 127.0.0.1, binds to that host, and uses computed browser URLs. Docker configuration sets the container host to 0.0.0.0, publishes port 3002 on host loopback, and checks health through 127.0.0.1.

Git Path Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path validation and literal Git diffs
services/GitService.js, services/diffService.js, test/diffService.test.js, test/git-service-paths.test.js, test/server.test.js, test/special-path-web.test.js
GitService separates options from paths, rejects magic pathspecs, and invokes Git with literal path matching. File-path validation accepts brackets, parentheses, braces, and dollar signs while retaining other listed rejections. Tests cover special-character paths, rejected magic pathspecs, and diff and export results.

Review Comment Exports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Comment selection and review export
public/index.html, server.js, services/ReviewGenerator.js, test/unified-review-comments.test.js
The client and server use matching filename-derived line ID prefixes. ReviewGenerator selects file comments and line comments for the matching file in unified and per-file exports.

Audit Documentation

The client lineId replaced every non-alphanumeric character with "_", so
a-b.js and a_b.js (or src/x.js and src_x.js) shared a prefix. A comment on
one went to both, including when the other file was excluded from the
export. Client and server now encode each non-alphanumeric character as
_<hex>_, which is injective and still safe in DOM ids. The test runs the
client's own lineIdPrefix() from public/index.html against the server's,
and checks that an excluded file's comment cannot leak.

P2 Badge Use collision-free line-comment identifiers

When two staged paths sanitize to the same prefix, such as src/x.js and src_x.js, the client creates the same line ID for both (public/index.html:1456), and this matcher consequently returns that shared comment for both files. The new unified export then attributes the last-saved comment to both file sections, corrupting the review context; line-comment data needs to retain the original filename or use a collision-free encoding.

Already fixed in 79edb97: client and server now share the injective _<hex>_ lineId encoding, so src/x.js and src_x.js (and a-b.js/a_b.js) get distinct ids; covered in test/unified-review-comments.test.js.

P2 Badge Check ownership before reading file comments

When an included file is named constructor, toString, __proto__, or another inherited Object.prototype key and the request contains no comment for it, comments[file] still resolves to a truthy inherited value. The unified export therefore emits a fabricated review comment such as the native Object constructor; check for an own property before appending the comment.

P2 Badge Open the configured bind address

When HOST is set to a concrete non-loopback address such as 192.168.1.10, this call binds the server only to that interface, but the startup banner and the CLI's --open flow still direct the user to http://localhost:<port>. Since that loopback address is not listening in this configuration, the advertised and automatically opened URL fails; derive the displayed/opened URL from the configured host, with a suitable local display address only for wildcard binds.

Fixed in 99e44be: the banner and ai-review start --open now derive the URL from HOST (concrete address as is, 0.0.0.0 -> 127.0.0.1, :: -> localhost) via services/serverUrl.js; test/bind-host.test.js checks the mapping and the live banner.

Give each split review a distinct output name.

When src/x.js and src_x.js are both included, safeName becomes src_x.js for both. The concurrent writes target one Markdown file, so one file’s diff and comments are lost. The summary still links both entries to that file. Use an injective filename encoding or add a stable unique suffix. The new per-file test calls generateFileContent directly, so it does not exercise these writes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
