Standardize on American spelling and fail CI on British spellings - #68
Standardizes the docs on American English and adds a lint step so British spellings can't come back. The docs were mixed: enrollment 36 times to enrolment 2, but organisation 28 times to organization 1.
Copy changes
53 words across 18 pages: organisation (28), enrols (8), modelled/modelling (7), unrealised (3), enrolment (2), enrol, behaviour, labelled, Optimisation, favour.
Two headings change, which changes their link anchors: "Modeled annual gain" (accelerate/readiness.md) and "No organization linked" (help/troubleshoot.md). Nothing in this repo or in Console links to the old anchors.
Merge after the companion Console PR deploys. Some of these are quoted Console labels ("Your organization", "Modeled annual gain", "MEV Cutoff Optimization"), and Console still shows the British spelling until that PR ships: getoptimum/optimum-cross-functional-dashboard#724.
The check (make lint-spelling, new step in lint.yml)
There is no word list. It compares two Hunspell dictionaries from the same SCOWL release (rel-2026.02.25: en_US and en_GB-ise, fetched by pinned URL and sha256 into the already-gitignored .cache/). A word is flagged when all three hold:
US English rejects it.
British English accepts it.
US English suggests a close form (same first three letters, at most two letters different) that British English rejects.
Names, conference titles and protocol terms are in neither dictionary, so they pass. That matters on the references page, where a plain US spell check flags about 300 words.
It scans every tracked .md file (frontmatter included) and .vitepress/config.mts. It ignores code blocks, inline code, link targets, URLs and HTML attributes. For a deliberate exception, put spelling-ignore-next-line in a comment on the line above.
The same check runs in Console (#724), so both repos follow one rule.
Verification
Run against main, the check reports exactly the 53 British spellings. On this branch it passes.
A planted "organisation" in a new page fails with file:line: 'organisation' is British spelling; US: organization.
eslint ., make lint-markdown and make build pass.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds Hunspell dictionary retrieval and a spelling lint target to the lint workflow. It changes documentation from British to American spellings. The account guide also clarifies where users return after sign-in and which setup steps occur after account creation.

Full details: Scope Discipline
Explanation
PASS. The diff stays within the stated spelling-standardization goal. Documentation changes replace British spellings and update the two affected anchors. The workflow, Make target, package script, Hunspell fetch script, and checker directly implement the stated CI spelling check. The ESLint Node-global setting supports the new scripts. No unrelated files, dependencies, or drive-by refactors are present.
Full details: Over-Engineering
Explanation
No over-engineering failure is evident in the PR diff. The Makefile target and package script follow existing command layers. The two small shell helpers remove duplicated dictionary-fetch and checksum logic, and the ignored dictionary cache avoids repeated downloads of pinned archives. No signature churn or implementation-detail tests were added.
Full details: Security
Explanation
No security failure is introduced. The new fetch script uses fixed HTTPS URLs, pinned SHA-256 hashes, quoted paths, and set -eu; the Node checker uses execFileSync with argument arrays rather than shell evaluation. The workflow has contents: read, and the diff contains no credentials, secrets, weak cryptography, or sensitive logging.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Full details: Behavior Safety
Explanation
The prior concern remains unresolved. This PR adds the non-trivial scripts/check-us-spelling.mjs scanner and scripts/fetch-dictionaries.sh download/checksum/cache path, then gates CI through package.json, Makefile, and .github/workflows/lint.yml. The repository contains no test/spec files or focused test command for these paths, and CI only runs the spelling command. Manual checks in the PR description do not provide regression coverage.
Resolution
Add focused automated tests for scripts/check-us-spelling.mjs and scripts/fetch-dictionaries.sh. Cover British and US spellings, jargon, Markdown code/link/URL/HTML exclusions, spelling-ignore-next-line, diagnostics and exit codes, checksum failures, and cached dictionary behavior. Run these tests in CI.

Registration is two screens. The first asks **How do you take part?** The second is **Your organisation**, or **Your details** for an individual, and includes **Do you run validators?** Registration ends when the account exists. Gateway setup, validator indices, and Accelerate are on the console after that.

Qualify conditional Accelerate access.
Accelerate is not shown for every account after registration. /accelerate/what-accelerate-does states that Optimum must enable it for the organization and that the organization must have at least 200 active validators on mainnet. Add “when available” or equivalent so this sentence does not promise an Accelerate screen to ineligible accounts.

curl has no transfer timeout, so a stalled release download can keep lint occupied until GitHub Actions applies its default 360-minute job timeout. Add finite connection and total-transfer limits.
The repository guidance does not require an explicit timeout-minutes value for every job. The platform default already bounds this job.
