gcb help <command> recurses through the dispatcher to <command> --help (e.g. gcb help gh pr), so the platform refusal and host/client command checks still run
gcb help help and gcb help --help print the root help
gcb <command> help is not an alias, the same as gh pr help being rejected
an option-bearing help path (a token starting with -) is refused, so gcb help pr --number cannot run the command
gcb help host proves the host-command refusal still runs

test/unit/gh-command.test.ts
Walkthrough
The CLI now routes help command paths to the backend with --help. Empty paths and listed help aliases print full help. Paths containing an argument that starts with - return an error. Tests cover these cases and command-specific help.
Changes: CLI Help
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Help dispatch and coverage packages/cli/src/index.ts, test/unit/commands.test.ts, test/unit/gh-command.test.ts
The CLI appends --help to valid help paths and rejects paths containing arguments that start with -. Tests cover help pr, help gh pr, root-help aliases, and invalid paths.
Help dispatch is mergeable; a refusal-path test would protect the command checks against regressions.

Explanation
The title "fix: align gcb help with gh help paths" matches the main change. The PR makes gcb help behave like gh help for command paths. It routes gcb help <command> to <command> --help, prints root help for help help and help --help, and refuses help paths that contain option tokens. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional fix: prefix. It does not list every detail, which is acceptable.

Reviewed 6f7c996 (both commits). The help-path rewrite does what the body says, and I checked it by running it rather than only reading the diff:
gcb help and gcb --help still print the root help, exit 0.
gcb help pr → gcb pr --help; gcb help gh pr → gcb gh pr --help; gcb help pr close → the catalogue help; on the host, gcb help init|stage|compose|diagnose|authorize|host-opener|app all print their usage and exit 0.
gcb help pr --number, gcb help pr --, gcb help --help → "help takes a command path, not options", exit 1, and no command runs.
corepack yarn check with the proxy variables unset: 312 pass. CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL.
Three notes, none of them blocking:
1. The help path calls backend.run directly, so it skips runCli's own two checks. This is the one I would change.
Recursing instead of calling the backend keeps the message and the ordering the rest of the dispatcher establishes, and it is shorter:
if(path.some((argument)=>argument.startsWith('-'))){process.stderr.write('gcb: help takes a command path, not options\n');return1;}returnrunCli([...path,'--help'],backend);
What that buys, measured:
gcb help init on a container currently answers gcb: unknown client command 'init'. — it is not unknown; it is a host command. Through runCli it becomes gcb: 'init' is a host command; install gcb-host on the host., which is what gcb init already says. Same for gcb help pr / gcb help setup on the host.
The help branch sits above platformRefusal(), which the comment above it says must run "before the backend imports its command modules". Reproduced with process.platform stubbed to win32 and node_modules/yaml moved aside the way the Windows job does: gcb init --help prints the refusal, gcb help init throws ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND: Cannot find package 'yaml' imported from …/commands/init.ts. With the recursion it prints the refusal; with the installed package (where yaml is present) it currently prints help on a platform the tool refuses to configure, which is at least a divergence from "the refusal fires before anything else happens".
2. argument === '--' is redundant.startsWith('-') already covers --, so the disjunction only reads as if -- were special-cased for a reason it does not need.
3. gcb help --help is now an error.gh help --help (2.103.3) prints help for help and exits 0, and both gcb --help and bare gcb help do the same here; gcb help help also printed the root help before this PR and is now unknown client command 'help'. If treating a lone --help/-h as a help request is unwanted, that is a defensible choice — but it is the one place the change does not match the gh behaviour the body claims, so it is worth a sentence in the body either way. (No test covers gcb help pr --help; with the refusal as written it errors, which is consistent with the intent.)
The tests added match the existing style in those two files and cover the routing and the refusal; the commands.test.ts case is not a duplicate of the gh-command.test.ts one (help pr vs help gh pr).
Approving. The three notes above can land as a follow-up if you would rather not take another head for them.
@i1stG Fixed in 9e69f5b: the help path recurses through runCli, so the platform refusal and host-command message apply; the redundant -- check is gone; help --help and help help print root help like gh. 313 pass.

Re-reviewed 3fef94d (rebased onto d028fb9; the PR diff is still just packages/cli/src/index.ts plus the two test files). All three notes from the last review are addressed, and I re-ran each case rather than trusting the tests:
The help path now recurses through runCli, so it inherits the dispatcher's checks. gcb help init on the client answers gcb: `init` is a host command; install gcb-host on the host., and gcb help pr on the host answers the mirror image. Stubbing process.platform to win32 and moving node_modules/yaml aside the way the Windows job does, gcb help init now prints the platform refusal, exactly like gcb init --help, instead of ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND: yaml. gcb help --help still prints help and imports nothing.
The redundant argument === '--' is gone; startsWith('-') carries it (gcb help pr -- is still refused).
gcb help --help, gcb help help and gcb help -h print the root help, exit 0, which matches gh help --help on 2.103.3 and the rest of this CLI. The invalid-path test now covers help pr --help instead, which is the case the refusal is actually for, and it still refuses.
Everything else I checked still behaves: help, --help; help pr/help setup/help gh/help gh pr/help pr close/help run view; help pr --number and help pr -- refused; help init on the host; help nope → unknown command. corepack yarn check with the proxy variables unset: 321 pass. CI is green on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL at this head (CodeRabbit was still running when I looked; it raised nothing actionable on the previous head).
Two things I would not hold this PR for:
gcb help get answers unknown command 'get', even though gcb get is the credential-helper operation the bin handles before runCli (gcb get --help says the same, so this is not new). The root help already documents gcb get|store|erase, so I would leave it.
The body says gcb <command> help "is not an alias, the same as gh pr help being rejected". The first half is true — it does not print that command's help — but the parity claim is only exact for the commands that fail validation: gcb pr help stops at --repo is required and gcb compose help at --socket-dir is required, while gcb setup help does not reject the token at all (verified here: it got as far as mount discovery and never mentioned help). That is pre-existing and outside this diff; worth a follow-up if a stray help positional should be an error rather than ignored, but it is not something this change introduced.
Cover the guarded refusal path for command-specific help.
The existing help gh pr test only checks successful output. A direct client-backend call would satisfy those assertions without running platformRefusal() or the host/client command checks. Add a help host case and assert the platform-specific or host-command refusal on stderr.

@JounQin Thanks for adding the help host regression test in 14ec5e1. The reported assertions address the coverage gap: status 1, empty stdout, and the platform-specific refusal or host-command message.

## Rules that are not obvious from the code
- **A review round is not finished until every claim has been read, fixed, or answered.** Resolve the ones
that no longer hold, reply to the ones that are fixed, and say plainly which are left. A thread left open
is a claim nobody checked, and a bot whose report cannot be read — because the tool truncates it, or
because its finding is below a preamble — is a gap in the tool worth fixing before the review.

Re-reviewed 14ec5e1. The only change since my last approval is the new gcb help host case, and it is the one worth having: it pins the behaviour that the recursion was introduced for, rather than only the successful-print path.
Verified against the code and by running it:
On this platform, gcb help host → gcb: `host` is a host command; install gcb-host on the host., status 1, empty stdout — the assertions match.
With process.platform stubbed to win32 and the client backend, the same invocation prints the native-Windows refusal, which is the branch the test takes there (the recursion puts platformRefusal() ahead of the host/client check, so the conditional is the right one).
help pr, help --help, help host-opener and the two refusals are unchanged from the previous head.
corepack yarn check with the proxy variables unset: 322 pass. CI is green at this head on Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL; CodeRabbit's remaining nitpick at 3fef94d is exactly this test and it has confirmed it.
