chore(esm): bump esm.sh and esbuild target to es2022 - #524
Align typecheck / type-fetch language floor (ScriptTargetES2022, lib es2022).
Optional CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM for gen + FE/E2E host (mirror override).
Independent of #523. Avoids pinning to CDN /es2020/* deep assets that have been flaky (e.g. dayjs locale 520).
CDN caveat (do not merge until green)
As of 2026-10-30, esm.sh is disk-constrained / returning 500/520 for many deep assets under both es2020 and es2022 (e.g. @vue/runtime-dom/.../runtime-dom.mjs, reka-ui/.../reka-ui.mjs, sass non-bundle). Stubs often 200; follow-up .mjs fails.
Local status:
go test ./internal/esmresolver — pass
go build — pass (existing embedded dist; go generate of vuesfc/vuevirtual/bootstrap blocked until CDN can serve @vue/compiler-sfc / sass at es2022)
CDN-hitting builder/FE tests — fail with upstream 520/500 (not unique to this bump while deep assets are broken)
Merge when: fresh go generate + ./choysum test unit web --fe succeed against live esm.sh without relying on stale local cache alone.
Test plan
go test ./internal/esmresolver/...
go generate ./pkg/jsengine/scripts/vuesfc/... (+ vuevirtual, bootstrap web) against healthy CDN
./choysum test unit web --fe
./choysum test unit --all (or core BE smoke)
Confirm resolver metrics / download URLs show target=es2022 and no /es2020/ fetches

Description
Bump esm.sh resolver default target from es2020 to es2022
Switch esbuild build targets to api.ES2022 across builders and hosts
Align typecheck/type-fetch language floor to ES2022 lib and target
Add CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM override in gen, FE, and E2E hosts
Update Go tests and fixtures to expect es2022 URLs
ESM package resolution can use a configured upstream, including one provided through an environment setting, while retaining the default CDN when none is set.
Builds, generated bundles, and type checking now target ES2022.
Bug Fixes
Improved package path resolution for upstreams that use a base path.
Applicable existing TypeScript configurations are updated to ES2022 defaults while preserving other compiler options and assignment-based class-field behavior.
Documentation
Updated generation guidance for ES2022 and documented the optional ESM upstream setting.
Align resolver defaults, module builders, FE/E2E hosts, go generate
scripts, and typecheck language floor with the CDN's current default
target so we stop depending on flaky /es2020/* deep assets.
Also honor CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM in gen/FE/E2E for mirror overrides.
This PR globally moves esm.sh resolution, esbuild output, TypeScript typechecking, and parser/compiler settings from ES2020 to ES2022, updates the associated tests and generated-asset configuration, and adds an optional CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM mirror override for CDN-dependent generation and FE/E2E host builds. Review should confirm all runtime and generated paths emit target=es2022 without legacy es2020 fetches, then validate fresh generation and CDN-backed FE/E2E tests against a healthy upstream.

Raise the default esm.sh and JavaScript build language target from ES2020 to ES2022 across resolution, bundling, parsing, typechecking, and generated assets.
Default resolver requests now use target=es2022, with resolver tests and URL expectations updated accordingly.
Backend, web, bootstrap, frontend, and E2E esbuild configurations target ES2022.
TypeScript type-fetch configs, compiler options, semantic parsing, and test fixtures use ES2022 libraries and script targets.
Generated Vue SFC and virtual-module builders request ES2022, retaining the virtual-module bundle query.

The resolver and TypeScript and esbuild configurations now use ES2022. The resolver supports configured upstream URLs and preserves upstream base paths during namespace resolution. Existing generated TypeScript configs migrate applicable ES2020 settings.
Changes: ESM target and upstream configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolver defaults, upstream paths, and target propagation internal/esmresolver/resolver.go, internal/esmresolver/resolver_test.go
The resolver defaults to ES2022, reads the configured upstream, and handles upstream-style absolute paths while retaining upstream base paths and importer targets. Resolver tests use ES2022 and cover default targets and upstream base-path resolution.
New generated configs use ES2022 defaults and set useDefineForClassFields to false. Existing configs migrate applicable ES2020 target and library entries to ES2022.
Build, parser, typecheck, and generator configurations use ES2022. Resolver setup in builders and Vue generators can use the environment-configured upstream. Vue generator instructions and TypeScript fixtures reflect the updated target. ESM workflow cache keys change to v2.
Resolve the offline-cache and custom-upstream generation issues before merging; the change can block generation and alter existing TypeScript behavior.

Explanation
The title "chore(esm): bump esm.sh and esbuild target to es2022" states the main change: raising the esm.sh resolver and esbuild build target from ES2020 to ES2022. The raw summary confirms this is the central change across resolver, builders, hosts, typecheck, and fixtures. It omits the secondary additions (CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM override, cache key versioning), which is acceptable for a title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template only partly. The template is essentially a CLA footer with no required section headings, so the author's Summary, CDN caveat, and Test plan sections go beyond it. The description explains the ES2022 bump, the CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM override, the test status, and the merge conditions. It is mostly complete and specific. It contains auto-generated PR-agent content with an HTML comment marker and a large details/table walkthrough, which adds noise but does not make the description incomplete. The CLA line from the template is not present in the description.

ensureModulesTsconfig only writes base when the tsconfig is missing; existing modules/tsconfig.json files still declare ES2020, so typecheck and esbuild may diverge from the new BuildCompilerOptions/api.ES2022 defaults. Consider having the merge path upgrade target/lib when they are still the old defaults, or note the required manual migration.
Why: The concern is plausible: ensureModulesTsconfig only writes defaults when missing, so existing tsconfigs may retain ES2020 and diverge from the new defaults. The improved_code is unchanged though, so it's a verification/migration note rather than a concrete fix.
Low
Normalize upstream override value
CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM is now read in four separate places with identical logic; a malformed value (e.g. missing scheme or trailing slash) will silently produce broken URLs. Validate/normalize the override once in esmresolver (e.g. a WithUpstream that trims trailing / and requires http(s)://) so all call sites get consistent behavior.
Why: The suggestion correctly notes duplicated CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM handling, but the improved_code only trims trailing slashes locally rather than centralizing validation in esmresolver as the content proposes. It's a minor robustness improvement, not a correctness bug.
Low
Test gap
Add test for upstream override
The new CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM override is untested; a regression here would silently route E2E/FE bundles to the wrong CDN. Add a small test asserting that setting the env var yields a resolver whose upstream matches (and that unset/whitespace falls back to https://esm.sh).
if u := strings.TrimSpace(os.Getenv("CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM")); u != "" {
esmOpts = append(esmOpts, esmresolver.WithUpstream(u))
}
+ // Covered by TestBuildE2EBundle_UpstreamOverride / _DefaultUpstream.
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: The new CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM override is indeed untested, so a test gap exists. However, the improved_code only adds a comment rather than an actual test, limiting its concrete value.
Low

Document cache invalidation on target bump
Bumping the default target changes the cache key (URL includes ?target=) and the emitted syntax, but there is no migration note or cache invalidation. Existing ~/.choysum/pkg/esm entries keyed on es2020 will be orphaned and stale esm.lock/prebuilt dist artifacts may still reference es2020. Consider documenting the cache bust and verifying lockfile/dist regeneration is covered by CI.
+ r := &Resolver{+ upstream: "https://esm.sh",+ target: "es2022",-
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The observation about cache-key change is valid, but the improved_code is identical to existing_code, and the suggestion is essentially a request to document/verify rather than a concrete fix. Low impact.
CI cannot mint fresh es2022 builds while esm.sh is disk-constrained; reuse
warm es2020 pkg/esm entries (and rewrite stubs) so prepare-embedded-assets
and module builds can proceed. Also centralize DefaultTarget, honor
CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM for builders/type-fetch, preserve mirror base paths on
root-absolute imports, and pin useDefineForClassFields=false on ES2022
tsconfig migration.
Cache rewritten fallback content under primary key
When the fallback download succeeds, the es2022 content is never cached under the requested URL, so every subsequent build re-downloads the es2020 variant and re-rewrites it. Also, the returned content is rewritten but the primary cache entry stays empty; consider writing the rewritten content to the primary cache key so later runs hit cache.
Why: Valid observation: the rewritten es2022 content is not cached under the requested URL, so subsequent builds re-download and re-rewrite the es2020 variant. Caching the rewritten content under the primary key would improve performance, though it is a moderate optimization rather than a correctness fix.
Low
Avoid per-import filesystem stat in resolver
isUpstreamInternalAbsPath calls os.Stat(path) on every root-absolute import, which is a filesystem syscall per resolution and can be slow on large builds; it also treats any existing file at that absolute path as local, which is unlikely but surprising. Consider gating the os.Stat check behind a cheap heuristic (e.g. only when the path has no @/version prefix) or caching results, and document the tradeoff.
Why: The os.Stat call lives in isUpstreamInternalAbsPath, not in the shown snippet, and the improved_code is identical to existing_code, so it does not actually demonstrate the proposed change. The performance concern is minor and speculative.

Possible issue
Let explicit upstream option take precedence over env
The env override silently wins even when a caller explicitly passed WithUpstream("https://esm.sh"), which makes the explicit option non-deterministic and hard to reason about. Prefer applying CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM only when no upstream was configured (empty), and let explicit options always take precedence.
- if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" || r.upstream == "https://esm.sh" {+ if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" {
if u := UpstreamFromEnv(); u != "" {
r.upstream = u
- } else if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" {+ } else {
r.upstream = "https://esm.sh"
}
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6
__
Why: The env override does silently win over an explicit WithUpstream("https://esm.sh"), which is a legitimate determinism concern. However, the PR intentionally uses env override for CI flexibility, so this is a design tradeoff rather than a clear bug.
Low
Possible bug
Narrow content target rewrite to URL boundaries
The blind strings.ReplaceAll on "/"+from+"/" can corrupt unrelated content (e.g. a string literal or a path segment like /es2020/ inside user code or a comment) and does not respect URL boundaries. Restrict the path rewrite to quoted URL-like occurrences (e.g. "/es2020/ and es2020/ inside import specifiers) or at least anchor it to "/ and " boundaries so only URL paths are rewritten.
func rewriteESMTargetInContent(content, from, to string) string {
from, to = strings.TrimSpace(from), strings.TrimSpace(to)
if from == "" || to == "" || from == to || content == "" {
return content
}
out := strings.ReplaceAll(content, "target="+from, "target="+to)
- out = strings.ReplaceAll(out, "/"+from+"/", "/"+to+"/")+ // Only rewrite path segments that appear inside quoted URL specifiers.+ out = strings.ReplaceAll(out, "\"/"+from+"/", "\"/"+to+"/")+ out = strings.ReplaceAll(out, "'/"+from+"/", "'/"+to+"/")
return out
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: The blind strings.ReplaceAll on "/"+from+"/" could theoretically corrupt unrelated content, but the fallback content is esm.sh-generated module code where /es2020/ path segments are the intended targets. The suggested fix is a reasonable hardening but the risk is low and the change is speculative.

ensureDefaults now silently overrides an explicitly configured https://esm.sh upstream with CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM, so a caller that deliberately passes WithUpstream("https://esm.sh") gets a different CDN. Only apply the env override when the upstream was left empty (the default), keeping explicit configuration authoritative.
- if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" || r.upstream == "https://esm.sh" {+ if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" {

}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6
__
Why: The concern is legitimate: ensureDefaults treats an explicit WithUpstream("https://esm.sh") the same as the default, so CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM overrides a deliberately configured value. However, this is a minor behavioral nuance rather than a clear bug, since callers passing the default URL likely intend the default behavior anyway.

Handle ES2020 lib sub-entries in migration
The lib migration only matches the exact string ES2020, so entries like ES2020.Promise or ES2020.String (valid TS lib names) are left behind while target becomes ES2022, producing an inconsistent config. Match the ES2020 prefix and rewrite the suffix accordingly.
if lib, ok := opts["lib"].([]interface{}); ok {
next := make([]interface{}, 0, len(lib))
libChanged := false
for _, item := range lib {
s, _ := item.(string)
- if strings.EqualFold(strings.TrimSpace(s), "ES2020") {- next = append(next, "ES2022")+ trimmed := strings.TrimSpace(s)+ if strings.HasPrefix(strings.ToUpper(trimmed), "ES2020") {+ next = append(next, "ES2022"+trimmed[len("ES2020"):])
libChanged = true
continue
}
next = append(next, item)
}
if libChanged {
opts["lib"] = next
changed = true
}
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6
__
Why: The migration only matches exact ES2020, leaving sub-entries like ES2020.Promise inconsistent with the bumped target. This is a valid edge-case improvement, though such granular lib entries are uncommon in practice.
Low
Possible issue
Remove unreliable CWD-relative stat check
os.Stat(path) is called with the raw import path (e.g. /[email protected]/...), which is resolved relative to the process CWD, not the module dir, so the local-file guard is unreliable and adds a syscall per resolve. Since resolveInNamespace already handles local filesystem paths after URL resolution, drop this stat check and rely on the existing isLocalFilesystemPath guard.
Why: The os.Stat(path) check does resolve relative to process CWD and is somewhat unreliable, but it is a defensive guard against misclassifying local files as upstream paths. Removing it could regress local-file handling, so the suggestion is debatable rather than clearly correct.
Low
Maintainability
Avoid silently rewriting user tsconfig
migrateModulesTsconfigTarget rewrites the user's tsconfig.json in place on every build, which is surprising for a file users may hand-edit (e.g. a deliberate ES2020 target gets silently bumped). Consider gating the rewrite behind an explicit opt-in (env flag) or only migrating when the file still matches the stock template, and add a test covering a custom target/lib being preserved.
var doc map[string]interface{}
if err := json.Unmarshal(raw, &doc); err != nil {
// User/custom JSON we should not rewrite.
return nil
}
+ if os.Getenv("CHOYSUM_MIGRATE_TSCONFIG") == "" {+ return nil+ }
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: The concern about silently rewriting a user's tsconfig.json is reasonable, but the proposed env-gated fix changes intended behavior and the migration already preserves non-stock configs. This is more of a design preference than a correctness issue.
The env var now silently overrides an explicitly configured WithUpstream("https://esm.sh"), which is surprising and makes the option non-deterministic. Only apply the env fallback when no upstream was set at all, and let callers (builders/gen) opt into the env override explicitly as they already do.
func (r *Resolver) ensureDefaults() {
- if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" || r.upstream == "https://esm.sh" {+ if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" {
if u := UpstreamFromEnv(); u != "" {
r.upstream = u
- } else if strings.TrimSpace(r.upstream) == "" {+ } else {
r.upstream = "https://esm.sh"
}
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6
__
Why: The ensureDefaults logic treats an explicit WithUpstream("https://esm.sh") the same as unset, so CHOYSUM_ESM_UPSTREAM silently overrides it. This is a real behavioral surprise, though the builders already opt into the env explicitly, so impact is moderate.
Low
Handle JSONC tsconfig during migration
json.Unmarshal fails on tsconfig files containing comments or trailing commas (JSONC), which are common; the migration then silently no-ops and users keep ES2020. Use a JSONC-tolerant parse (or strip comments) so the migration actually applies, and only skip on truly unparseable input.
var doc map[string]interface{}
- if err := json.Unmarshal(raw, &doc); err != nil {+ if err := json.Unmarshal(stripJSONCComments(raw), &doc); err != nil {
// User/custom JSON we should not rewrite.
return nil
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6
__
Why: tsconfig files commonly contain comments/trailing commas, so json.Unmarshal failing silently no-ops the migration and leaves users on ES2020. Valid concern, though stripJSONCComments is referenced without being defined in the snippet.
Low
Cover string lib form in migration
The migration only rewrites lib when it is a []interface{}; a single-string "lib": "ES2020" or a []string-shaped value is left untouched, leaving an inconsistent ES2020 lib with an ES2022 target. Handle the string form too, and add a test covering the migration path (existing tsconfig with ES2020 target/lib).
- if lib, ok := opts["lib"].([]interface{}); ok {+ switch lib := opts["lib"].(type) {+ case []interface{}:
next := make([]interface{}, 0, len(lib))
libChanged := false
for _, item := range lib {
s, _ := item.(string)
if strings.EqualFold(strings.TrimSpace(s), "ES2020") {
next = append(next, "ES2022")
libChanged = true
continue
}
next = append(next, item)
}
if libChanged {
opts["lib"] = next
changed = true
}
+ case string:+ if strings.EqualFold(strings.TrimSpace(lib), "ES2020") {+ opts["lib"] = "ES2022"+ changed = true+ }
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 5
__
Why: Handling only []interface{} for lib leaves a string-form "lib": "ES2020" unmigrated, producing an inconsistent ES2022 target with ES2020 lib. Reasonable hardening, but the string form is uncommon and the impact is minor.
Low
Possible bug
Drop filesystem probe in path check
os.Stat(path) on a root-absolute path probes the real filesystem (e.g. /node, /stable) and can misclassify a genuine esm.sh path as local if such a directory exists; it also does a syscall per resolve. Restrict the local-file check to paths under the module path or drop it, since esm.sh internal paths are never local files.
func isUpstreamInternalAbsPath(path string) bool {
if !strings.HasPrefix(path, "/") || strings.HasPrefix(path, "//") {
return false
}
parts := strings.SplitN(strings.TrimPrefix(path, "/"), "/", 2)
if len(parts) == 0 {
return false
}
first := parts[0]
- if !(strings.Contains(first, "@") || first == "node" || first == "stable" || isESMVersionPrefix(first)) {- return false- }- if _, err := os.Stat(path); err == nil {- return false- }- return true+ return strings.Contains(first, "@") || first == "node" || first == "stable" || isESMVersionPrefix(first)
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 5
__
Why: The os.Stat(path) probe on a root-absolute path is a plausible misclassification and per-resolve syscall concern, but the suggested fix removes the local-file guard entirely, which could regress the intended local-file exclusion. Partially valid but the improved code may overcorrect.

Preserve the configured upstream path in transitive type resolution.
FetchTypesForModule passes each transitive import to resolveTypeImport. With an upstream such as https://cdn.example/esm, base.ResolveReference resolves /[email protected]/index.d.ts as https://cdn.example/[email protected]/index.d.ts and drops /esm. The recursive fetch can then miss the declaration, leaving the generated type graph incomplete.
Pass the configured upstream into the shared resolver. Join root-absolute imports to the upstream path. Keep relative imports on the current URL base. This affects bootstrap, vuesfc, and vuevirtual.

Review comment at @internal/bootstrap/web/gen.go at line 196:
Update the shared type-import resolution used by FetchTypesForModule to retain
the configured upstream path for root-absolute imports, while continuing to
resolve relative imports against the current URL; propagate the upstream
configuration through bootstrap, vuesfc, and vuevirtual.

Make Vue cache matching upstream-aware in bootstrap generation.
internal/bootstrap/web/package.json declares vue, and buildBootstrapDist now passes the configured upstream to FetchTypesForModule. For a custom upstream, the Vue completeness check finds no esm.sh_vue@... entry, so each bootstrap generation removes [email protected] and performs another discovery and recursive fetch. The purge also leaves URL-derived files from an earlier custom upstream.
Pass the upstream into the Vue completeness and purge helpers. Derive the Vue entry and sibling filenames with the same URL-flattening logic as typeCachePathForURL.
The vuesfc and vuevirtual generators do not share this specific branch because their manifests declare @vue/compiler-* and @vue/language-core, not vue.
