Do not invalidate and purge on every GET of an unstorable response - #252
A #[Cacheable]/#[CacheableResponse]/#[DonutCache] response that sets its own Cache-Control to private or no-store is not stored (new in 1.18.0). As a result, every GET of it is a miss that reaches the write path, and the write path ran its pre-write cleanup before the unstorable check:
QueryRepository::doPut(): deleteEtag() ran before reason().
DonutRepository::doPutStatic() / doPutDonut(): invalidateTags() ran before put_skipped.
ResourceStorage::invalidateTags() invalidates both pools and always calls the CDN purger. So with Fastly or Akamai configured, each such GET made a synchronous purge API call. Counting purges over three GETs of app://self/unstorable-value gave 1, 2, 3, with $tags = ["_unstorable-value_"] each time. In 1.17.1 the response was stored, so cleanup ran only on a real miss.
Change
The unstorable check now runs first. For an unstorable response, cleanup runs only when an earlier write actually left an entry for the URI:
DonutRepository: checks get() (the view) or getDonut() (the template).
Both use a private cleanUpBeforeWrite(). A storable write cleans up exactly as before.
Old entries are still dropped. A URI that was stored while storable and is later written as unstorable (a manual put(), or the donut interceptor's degraded re-write) is still cleaned up, CDN purge included.
No interface changes. The check uses only existing ResourceStorageInterface reads. ResourceStorageInterface and DonutRepositoryInterface are unchanged.
Cost. A plain miss of an unstorable response now does one local pool read, instead of invalidating two pools and purging the CDN.
In QueryRepository::doPut(), reason() moved from just before headerSetter to the top of the method. It still reads the unmutated Cache-Control. setCacheDependency() and toString() in between do not touch Cache-Control.
Known limits (same as or narrower than before)
The existence check reads the entry under the current request's Vary key. An entry stored under another Vary value is not detected, so it is not invalidated on an unstorable write. That entry was that variant's own response, and the URI tag invalidation by a command or purge() still reaches it.
An orphan ETag with no value or view behind it (possible only after a partial pool failure) is not cleaned up by an unstorable write.
Tests
The regression tests assert on PurgerInterface calls through FakeCountingPurger, not on log events: the log's vocabulary is not a contract, the CDN call is.
testRepeatedUnstorableGetDoesNotPurge (QueryRepositoryTest) and testRepeatedUnstorableDonutGetDoesNotPurge (DonutRepositoryTest, covering both #[CacheableResponse] and #[DonutCache]): three GETs of an unstorable response call the purger zero times. Both fail with src at 1c8372d and pass with this change.
testUnstorablePutStillDropsAnEarlierEntry and testUnstorableDonutWriteStillDropsAnEarlierEntry: after an unstorable write of a URI that was stored earlier, the entry (view and template for donut) is gone and the purger was called. These pin the "no stale entry" side and pass before and after.
CHANGELOG: one line under 1.18.0 / Changed.
Verification
PHPUnit: 484 tests. One failure, LogDestinationFailureTest::testASessionThatCannotBeWrittenIsReported, fails identically on unmodified 1c8372d in this environment: running as root can write the "unwritable" destination.
composer cs / composer sa: not run locally, because the tool install could not fetch archives from GitHub in this environment. CI runs them, and was green on the previous head (7ad7d4f), PHPMD included.
An unstorable response (its own code sets Cache-Control private/no-store) is
never written, so every GET of it misses and reaches the write, which ran the
pre-write cleanup each time: both pools invalidated and the CDN purged on
every request. Decide unstorability first and clean up only when an earlier
write left an entry for the URI (a value/view, or a donut template), so a
stale entry is still dropped while a plain miss writes and purges nothing.

The regression tests now count PurgerInterface calls with FakeCountingPurger
instead of looking for pre_write_cleanup/invalidate log events: the log's
vocabulary is not a contract, the CDN call is.

Cleanup for unstorable responses now runs only when cached state already exists for the URI. The changes update QueryRepository and DonutRepository and add tests for repeated GETs and writes over existing entries.
Changes: Unstorable Response Cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Gate pre-write cleanup on cached state src/QueryRepository.php, src/DonutRepository.php, CHANGELOG.md
Both repositories skip cleanup for an unstorable response when no cached state exists for its URI. When cached state exists, cleanup logs the context and invalidates the URI tag or deletes its ETag.
Test repeated GETs and prior entries tests/QueryRepositoryTest.php, tests/DonutRepositoryTest.php
Tests verify that repeated GETs for unstorable responses do not purge tags, and that writing a private response removes a prior entry and triggers purging.
Repeated GETs of unstorable responses no longer purge the CDN, which is the intended fix. In a narrow case, a parent page embedding a child that later becomes private can keep serving the child's old content until the page's own TTL expires. Decide whether to accept this edge case or keep tag invalidation when a parent may still depend on the URI before merging.

- Line 117: Update the early-return condition around URI-tag invalidation in
QueryRepository so an absent child URI entry does not skip invalidation when a
parent may depend on its URI tag. Apply the corresponding check in
DonutRepository::cleanUpBeforeWrite(), skipping invalidation only when both
URI-keyed entries are absent.
