.coderabbit.yaml currently says reviews run on demand: auto review is off, so every PR gets "Review skipped" unless someone comments @coderabbitai review. This turns auto review on.

reviews:
  review_status: false
  auto_review:
    enabled: true
    drafts: false
    base_branches:
      - '1\..*'
  • enabled: true: review each PR when it opens and on later pushes.
  • drafts: false: a draft is not reviewed until it is marked ready for review, and then it is reviewed automatically. The free OSS review limit is not spent while a draft's CI is still being fixed.
  • base_branches: auto review covers the default branch only. This adds the 1.x maintenance branches (e.g. 1.17.x).
  • review_status: false is kept from Turn off CodeRabbit's review status message #248.

Turn auto review on, including drafts, and for PRs into the 1.x
maintenance branches (e.g. 1.17.x) as well as the default branch.

Closing without merging. Reviews stay on demand, as .coderabbit.yaml already says (#248).

What trying auto review showed:

  • Only 1 review per hour. This repository's free OSS plan includes one review per hour ("Your plan provides up to 1 included review per hour"). Once that review is used, any other review in the same hour is skipped with "Review limit reached".
  • Auto review spends that one review on whatever comes first. This PR changes only a config file, yet its review used the hour's allowance, and the @coderabbitai review request on Do not invalidate and purge on every GET of an unstorable response #252 (a cache-correctness fix) right before it was rate-limited. The push to this PR afterwards was rate-limited too.
  • The PR's own head config applies before merge. CodeRabbit read .coderabbit.yaml from this PR's branch ("Layers: Repository YAML", commit f8115af), so auto review ran on this PR itself. Changing the file on a branch is enough to change how that branch's PR is reviewed.
  • drafts: false would review a draft when it is marked ready. That is the cheaper shape if auto review is ever wanted, but with one review per hour, choosing which PR gets it still works better.

Going forward, request @coderabbitai review when a PR with code changes is marked ready for review, and leave config and docs PRs unreviewed.

@koriym Understood. Keep reviews on demand. Request @coderabbitai review for PRs with code changes when they are ready for review. Leave config-only and docs-only PRs unreviewed.

The inspected PR branch still has auto_review.enabled: true and drafts: false. Closing without merging avoids applying those changes to the base branch. No configuration change is needed for this decision.
