1.18.0 pre-release fixes: no-store without max-age, @internal, retention - #245
README: rewritten around what the package is - a CQRS-style read side whose entries writes keep current - and points to the manual for how to use it. README.ja.md is removed; the README links the Japanese manual and docs. The usage notes for #[Cacheable] の付いていないリソースをEmbedすると、onGet() で値を読んでも依存にならない #241 move to the manual.
Retention: KeepMutationsAndFailures keeps a session for a mutation, a failed effect or the sample. A semantic_logger_error diagnostic on its own is the logger's concern and no longer keeps it.
@internal: 33 implementation classes that applications reach only through modules and interfaces are marked @internal (interceptors, providers, and DI-bound implementations such as QueryRepository, DonutRepository, ResourceStorage). Classes that appear in a public signature stay public: ResourceState, SurrogateKeys, Log\Session and ResourceBodyEvaluator. So do EtagSetter, HttpCache and CliHttpCache, because BEAR.Package references them. Expiry, UriTag, RefreshAnnotatedCommand, the log runtime classes announced in 1.17.0 and RepositoryLogger also stay public.

Walkthrough
This pull request changes cache-header handling to avoid appending max-age when Cache-Control contains no-store. It also changes log-session retention, adds @internal annotations to implementation classes, and updates project documentation.
The setter checks all case variants of Cache-Control for max-age and no-store. Tests cover no-store responses and exact header values. The changelog and context documentation describe the related header behavior.
A semantic_logger_error record alone no longer retains a session. The associated test is removed, and the log documentation and changelog update the retention criteria.

Cache-Control 'no-store, max-age=31536000' for #[Cacheable] + #[HttpCache(noStore: true)] #243: the new HeaderSetterTest::testSetCacheControlMaxAgeDoesNotAppendALifetimeToNoStore failed before the fix with 'no-store, max-age=31536000'. QueryRepositoryTest::testCacheableWithNoHttpCacheStillStores now pins the declared header unchanged and still asserts the second GET hits. Removing the no-store guard fails both. A probe resource #[Cacheable, HttpCache(noStore: true)] changed from no-store, max-age=31536000 to no-store, and its second GET is still served from the store.
Retention: the same LIFO-violated read session (types get, get, semantic_logger_error, cache_hit, semantic_logger_error) gives keeps()true with the 1.x class and false on this branch. RetentionPolicyTest::testASessionWhoseOwnRecordsMayBeIncompleteIsKept was removed deliberately: it pinned the dropped rule.

Keep ResourceState public.
QueryRepositoryInterface::get() and ResourceStorageInterface::get() both return ResourceState|null. Marking this class @internal makes an internal type part of two public contracts. Remove @internal, or replace the public return type before applying this annotation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@coderabbitai A design question about the new README (lines 6-8), not a code review. We would like your honest view, including disagreement.
The README describes the package as a "CQRS-style read side" in which "the result of each GET is kept as a read model". Our reasoning:
CQS: the package relies on it. onGet is the query; onPost/onPut/onPatch/onDelete are commands. GET results are stored, and commands trigger invalidation.
Read model: we believe the stored entry is a read model, not just a key lookup in Redis:
it is shaped for reading (the composed body/view, served as-is);
the write side keeps it consistent (#[Refresh] rebuilds it, #[Purge]/tags drop it, across the origin pool, the ETag pool and the CDN);
a HIT answers without touching the write model (no onGet, no DB).
CQRS does not require the read model to be designed separately; the write model (the DB) and the read model (the stored representation) only have to be distinct.
Where it departs from textbook CQRS: on a MISS, onGet reads the write store and builds the read model on the spot (cache-aside), whereas a textbook read side never queries the write store. #[Refresh] rebuilds at write time, which behaves like a projection. That one departure is why we write "CQRS-style" rather than "CQRS".
Wording: we chose "read model" over "materialized view". A database materialized view is refreshed by the engine itself, while here the commands do it.
Do you agree with this characterisation? Is "CQRS-style read side" / "read model" accurate, too strong or too weak? If you have a better phrasing, please suggest it.
Find authoritative definitions from Martin Fowler CQRS and Microsoft Azure CQRS and Materialized View patterns: does CQRS require separate databases or prohibit queries against a shared write database, and can application code maintain a materialized view rather than a database engine?
Length of output: 30727
@koriymI agree with “CQRS-style read side” and “read model.” Both are defensible here. I disagree with parts of the reasoning, and I think “not a cache” is too absolute.
What supports the description
The stored representation serves a distinct read purpose. It contains composed output, supports reads without re-running onGet, and has a lifecycle tied to commands and dependencies.
That makes “read model” a useful architectural description, not just a more impressive name for a Redis entry. A key lookup describes the access mechanism. A read model describes the representation’s role.
However, a stored GET result does not establish CQRS by itself. A conventional response cache can have the same properties. The stronger justification is the separation between the command model and the read representation, with explicit mechanisms to refresh or invalidate that representation.
Where I disagree
1. CQRS does not prohibit reading the write database.
“The textbook read side never queries the write store” is too restrictive. Fowler explicitly allows the command and query models to share a database. Microsoft also describes a basic CQRS architecture with a shared data store. The central distinction is between models and responsibilities, not necessarily databases. Fowler, Microsoft
Your cache-aside MISS path therefore does not, by itself, disqualify the design from CQRS. It does distinguish this package from a continuously maintained, independently queryable projection store.
I would keep “CQRS-style” because the package supports the read-side pattern without requiring the application to adopt a complete CQRS architecture. That is a stronger reason than treating the MISS path as an exception.
2. A distinct stored copy is not sufficient on its own.
I would qualify “the models only have to be distinct.” Physical separation alone is insufficient. Otherwise, almost every response cache would establish CQRS.
Your composed, read-oriented representation supports the argument. Merely storing a second copy would not.
3. “Materialized view” does not require database-engine maintenance.
A database-native materialized view is one implementation. The architectural pattern also includes application-maintained projections. Microsoft explicitly describes that broader meaning. Materialized View pattern
You can still prefer “read model.” It communicates the role more directly. I would not reject “materialized view” because commands maintain it.
What I would change in the README
At Line 6, “not a cache” creates an unnecessary opposition. A representation can be both a read model and a cache. Write-driven invalidation does not make it cease to be a cache.
At Line 8, “each GET” sounds unconditional. “Cacheable GET results” makes the scope explicit.
My suggested wording is:
A read-side repository with write-driven refresh and invalidation.
BEAR.QueryRepository provides a CQRS-style read side for BEAR.Sunday. It stores cacheable GET results as read models. On a miss, onGet builds the read model on demand. Commands use attributes to refresh or invalidate affected read models and their cache dependencies. By default, entries remain until invalidated; an optional TTL supports expiry-based freshness.
My verdict: keep “CQRS-style read side” and “read model.” Describe cache-aside construction directly. Replace “not a cache” with the specific distinction you want readers to understand: read models maintained through explicit, write-driven refresh and invalidation, rather than expiry alone.
Opening line: "not a cache" is now "not a cache left to expire".
Scope: "each GET" is now "cacheable GETs".
Cache-aside: the MISS path is stated directly ("On a miss, onGet builds one on demand").
You were right that CQRS does not forbid reading the write store, and that a materialized view need not be engine-maintained. We keep "read model" because it names the role. Please review the latest head.

Length of output: 5974
@koriym I checked the latest head, 6115109, and its README diff. The revised wording addresses my concerns.
Line 6: “not a cache left to expire” distinguishes write-driven maintenance from expiry alone. It no longer denies that the package uses caching.
Line 8: “cacheable GETs” states the correct scope.
Line 8: The explicit miss path explains how onGet builds a read model on demand.
“CQRS-style read side” and “read model” remain appropriate. I have no further findings on this wording.
I’ll also request the PR review you asked for.

Learning: Within repository "bearsunday/BEAR.QueryRepository", only for files matching one of ["README.md"]: When reviewing the architectural description in README.md, treat “CQRS-style read side” and “read model” as intentional terms for cacheable GET representations built by onGet on a miss and refreshed or purged by commands. Do not reject these terms solely because the miss path reads the write store or because the representations also function as a cache. Check that the description limits storage to cacheable GETs and states the on-demand miss path rather than implying every GET is stored or that the read models are maintained only in advance.
