Three small pre-release fixes found by independent review of bc2b52e..062bbde (1.17.0 → 1.x), plus doc updates.

  1. Pin DonutRepository::refreshDonut()'s leak guard: a test now pins the early return $ro; in the marked branch - content recomposed while marked unstorable must never reach saveView().
  2. Fix refresh-path hole scope: ResourceDonut::refresh() now wraps each re-fetch in enterHole()/leaveHole(), symmetric with DonutRequest::__toString(). Without this, a mark during a refresh was attributed to TOP_LEVEL, so an unrelated nested #[DonutCache] hole's own template write looked refused too. A hole that marks itself during a refresh still refuses only its own template, unchanged.
  3. Keep a hand-set private/no-store Cache-Control header (owner-approved): such a response is still refused the server-side store and CDN headers, but HeaderSetter no longer overwrites a header the application set itself - only a mark() still forces private, no-store + Pragma: no-cache.
  4. CHANGELOG [Unreleased] rewritten to match the above, plus the CacheVersionModule rolling-deploy note and ResourceDonut::FORMAT going private.
  5. Documented the sibling-collateral-refusal limitation (a mark refuses an unrelated sibling's own write too) as deliberate, not fixed here - left for a later release.

Full gate (composer cs, composer sa, composer phpmd, vendor/bin/phpunit) green; 100% line/method/class coverage on src/.

Refs #222, #232.

A hole that both changes content and marks the response unstorable
during a donut refresh must not have that content persisted for the
next visitor. DonutRepository::refreshDonut() already guards this with
an early return in its marked branch, but nothing pinned it - mutating
that return away let the marked content reach saveView() unnoticed.

MutableComment gains an opt-in mark() call so a test can reproduce the
exact scenario: changed + marked content recomposed during a refresh.
ResourceDonut::refresh() re-fetched each placeholder with
$resource->get($uri) without wrapping it in
UncacheableMarkInterface::enterHole()/leaveHole(), unlike
DonutRequest::__toString() on the MISS path. A mark made during that
re-fetch was therefore always attributed to TOP_LEVEL: an unrelated
sibling hole marking itself during a refresh made an innocent nested
#[DonutCache] hole's own reasonExcludingHoleMarks() check read as
marked too, and that hole's own, otherwise-storable template was
wrongly refused a re-save after a purge.

DonutRepository::refreshDonut() is refresh()'s only caller; it now
passes its own $mark. A nested hole that marks ITSELF during a refresh
must still refuse its own template exactly as before - pinned by a new
test alongside the fix for the unrelated-sibling case.
…e response

UnstorableGate::reason() returns the same 'unstorable' for a mark()
and for a Cache-Control the response set itself (private/no-store), so
HeaderSetter could not tell them apart and overwrote both the same
way: Cache-Control: private, no-store plus Pragma: no-cache, clobbering
whatever the developer wrote.

HeaderSetter now injects UncacheableMarkInterface directly and checks
isMarked() once reason() is non-null: a mark still gets the package's
own refusal headers unchanged, but a response refused only because of
its own hand-set header keeps that header exactly as written. The
CDN-facing headers (Surrogate-Key, CDN-Cache-Control and the Fastly/
Akamai equivalents) are stripped either way - this package still never
hands a shared cache a lifetime for a response it refuses to store.

put_skipped's reason enum is unaffected (still 'unstorable' either
way) - QueryRepository/DonutRepository's own store-skip decision never
needed to distinguish the two triggers, only the header setters did.
Split the single dense bearsunday#222 Added bullet into Added/Changed/Fixed
entries matching this PR's final behaviour: the hand-set
private/no-store exception (item 3), ResourceDonut::FORMAT going
private, and the CacheVersionModule rolling-deploy guidance. Shortened
the bearsunday#232 entry to one sentence and dropped its 'no action needed'
tail, superseded by the CacheVersionModule bullet.

The refresh-path hole-scope fix (ResourceDonut::refresh()) is not
listed under Fixed: UncacheableMark/enterHole()/leaveHole() are new in
this same Unreleased cycle, so that bug never shipped.
A mark made by one #[DonutCache] hole also refuses an entirely
unrelated sibling #[Cacheable] resource's own write in the same
request, because QueryRepositoryInterface/DonutRepositoryInterface
read UncacheableMarkInterface::isMarked() - 'marked anywhere in this
request, by any owner' - and cannot see the resource call tree the
owner stack is built from. This is deliberately conservative, not a
regression, and is left for a later release; documented on both
interfaces so the trade-off is visible where the gate is consulted.

Walkthrough

The change scopes uncacheable marks to embedded-resource refreshes and updates response-header handling when storage is blocked. Tests cover nested donut-cache refreshes and application-set Cache-Control headers.

Changes: Request cacheability and donut refresh

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hole-scoped donut refresh and persistence
src/ResourceDonut.php, src/DonutRepository.php, src/UncacheableMarkInterface.php, src/UnstorableGateInterface.php, tests/DonutCacheTest.php, tests/ResourceDonutTest.php, tests/DonutQueryInterceptorPurgeTest.php, tests/DonutRepositoryTest.php, tests/Fake/.../Page/Html/*, tests/Fake/.../templates/Page/Html/*, CHANGELOG.md
ResourceDonut::refresh() now enters and leaves the mark scope for each embedded URI, including when fetching or rendering throws. DonutRepository passes the mark to refresh. Tests cover marked content, nested templates, and cache persistence. The documentation describes the request-wide marking limitation.
Marked-response header handling
src/HeaderSetter.php, tests/Fake/.../Resource/App/HandSetPrivateCacheControl.php, tests/HandSetPrivateCacheControlTest.php, tests/HeaderSetterTest.php, tests/ResourceRepositoryTest.php, CHANGELOG.md
When storage is blocked, HeaderSetter strips CDN-facing headers. It sets Cache-Control: private, no-store and Pragma: no-cache only when the response is marked; otherwise it preserves application-set values. Tests cover both header cases and shared mark setup.

@koriym Evidence for the three fixes (head df47531):

1. DonutRepository::refreshDonut() leak guard — pinned by testRefreshDoesNotPersistContentMarkedUnstorableDuringTheRefresh (tests/DonutQueryInterceptorPurgeTest.php).
Mutation: removed the return $ro; inside the marked branch (src/DonutRepository.php, the if ($unstorable !== null) { ...; return $ro; } right after logCdnHeaders($ro)).

vendor/bin/phpunit --filter testRefreshDoesNotPersistContentMarkedUnstorableDuringTheRefresh tests/DonutQueryInterceptorPurgeTest.php

→ 1 failure: content recomposed while marked unstorable must not be persisted for a later visitor — Failed asserting that ResourceState Object (... 'view' => '...comment-b-secret...') is null. Restored the line → passes again.

2. Refresh-path hole scope (ResourceDonut::refresh() enterHole()/leaveHole()) — pinned by testRefreshReSavesAnUnrelatedNestedDonutCacheHolesTemplateAfterASiblingHoleMarksDuringTheRefresh (tests/DonutRepositoryTest.php); the companion testRefreshStillRefusesANestedDonutCacheHolesOwnTemplateWhenItMarksItselfDuringTheRefresh pins that the opposite (self-mark) direction is unaffected.
Mutation: removed the $mark->enterHole($uri)/leaveHole($uri) wrap around the re-fetch in ResourceDonut::refresh()'s callback.

vendor/bin/phpunit --filter testRefreshReSavesAnUnrelatedNestedDonutCacheHolesTemplateAfterASiblingHoleMarksDuringTheRefresh tests/DonutRepositoryTest.php

→ 1 failure: the unrelated hole's own purged template was re-saved during the sibling's marked refresh, not skipped because of the sibling's mark — Failed asserting that null is not null. Restored the wrap → passes again; the self-mark companion test stays green under the same mutation (orthogonal code path), confirming it isn't a vacuous check.

3. Hand-set private/no-store keeps the developer's header — pinned by HandSetPrivateCacheControlTest (new file).
Mutation: in HeaderSetter::__invoke(), always ran the mark-branch strip+overwrite instead of gating it on $this->mark->isMarked().

vendor/bin/phpunit tests/HandSetPrivateCacheControlTest.php

→ 1 failure: expected 'private', got 'private, no-store'. Restored the gate → passes again.

API chosen: HeaderSetter now takes UncacheableMarkInterface directly (constructor injection, auto-wired via the existing $this->bind(HeaderSetter::class)) and calls isMarked() once $this->gate->reason($ro) !== null. No new interface method, no change to UnstorableGateInterface or the put_skipped reason enum (unstorable either way) — the two existing services already carry everything the header setters need to tell the triggers apart.

1.17.0 (bc2b52e) vs this branch, same fixture (#[Cacheable] resource that sets Cache-Control: private in onGet(), expirySecond: 60), observed by running HeaderSetter directly against 1.17.0's own classes in a throwaway script:

Cache-Control: private, max-age=60
ETag: "3255375855"

1.17.0 unconditionally appended max-age=60 to the hand-set private and set an ETag — i.e. it stored the response server-side despite the private the developer wrote, and told every cache it was good for 60s. On this branch the same fixture (HandSetPrivateCacheControlTest::testHandSetPrivateCacheControlIsNotStoredButKeepsItsOwnHeader) is never stored (a second GET re-runs onGet(), no Age header) and its Cache-Control stays exactly private — no max-age, no CDN header.

Gate (full run, head df47531):

composer cs    → 80/80, 0 violations
composer sa → phpstan: no errors; psalm: no errors
composer phpmd → exit 0, no violations (tool's own PHP 8.4 deprecation noise only)
vendor/bin/phpunit → OK, Tests: 469, Assertions: 1376, Failures: 0

Coverage (php -d pcov.enabled=1 vendor/bin/phpunit --coverage-text --coverage-filter=src):

Classes: 100.00% (108/108)
Methods: 100.00% (294/294)
Lines:   100.00% (1380/1380)

Finding ① (sibling collateral refusal) is intentionally not fixed here — documented as a deliberate limitation on UncacheableMarkInterface/UnstorableGateInterface, left for a later release.

… note

DonutRepository::refreshDonut()'s comments described the unstorable
branch as unconditionally setting Cache-Control: private, no-store -
true before the hand-set-header fix, no longer true: HeaderSetter now
only overwrites Cache-Control/Pragma when a mark fired, and otherwise
keeps the developer's own header while still stripping CDN headers.

README's Unstorable-Response Guard bullet said to 'purge them as part
of the deploy' for pre-upgrade entries; aligned it with the CHANGELOG's
actual guidance (bump CacheVersionModule's version), which also covers
the rolling-deploy raw-placeholder case a plain purge would not.
… absent

The existing #[Cacheable] regression test's assertArrayNotHasKey
checks for CDN-Cache-Control/Surrogate-Key hold vacuously there: a
plain app resource never gets those headers regardless. Added the
donut-path sibling (BlogPostingCacheControl, #[CacheableResponse]
hand-setting Cache-Control: no-store): DonutRepository::setHeaders()
sets Surrogate-Key unconditionally before HeaderSetter runs, so this
proves the strip actually happens - confirmed by mutating the strip to
run only when marked, which makes Surrogate-Key leak through and the
new test fail.

Follow-up (head now c6025f7), addressing review feedback:

  • DonutRepository::refreshDonut()'s comments overstated the unstorable-branch behaviour ("this is what replaces the restored ... headers with Cache-Control: private, no-store") - no longer unconditionally true after item 3; reworded to say HeaderSetter strips CDN headers always and only overwrites Cache-Control/Pragma when a mark fired.
  • README's Unstorable-Response Guard bullet said "purge them as part of the deploy"; aligned with the CHANGELOG's actual guidance (bump CacheVersionModule's version).
  • Added testHandSetNoStoreOnADonutResponseKeepsItsHeaderAndStripsCdnHeaders (donut path, BlogPostingCacheControl): the existing #[Cacheable] regression test's CDN-header assertions hold vacuously there (a plain app resource never gets those headers regardless); this one proves the strip is real, since DonutRepository::setHeaders() sets Surrogate-Key unconditionally before HeaderSetter runs. Mutation: made the CDN strip conditional on isMarked() too → Surrogate-Key leaked through, test failed; reverted → passes.
  • Re-ran item 1's mutation proof (DonutRepository.php's return $ro; guard) against the currently-committed test text (after the PHPStan-driven edit) to confirm it's still mutation-sensitive: same failure as before, confirmed, reverted.

Full gate re-run clean: composer cs 80/80, composer sa no errors, vendor/bin/phpunit 470 tests / 0 failures, coverage 100% classes/methods/lines on src/.

Comment thread src/ResourceDonut.php
An exception from a hole's re-fetch ($resource->get($uri) during a
donut refresh - a pool outage, a broken onGet()) must still leave the
mark's owner stack balanced: without the finally, the throwing hole's
uri stays stuck as the 'current' scope for the rest of the request,
misattributing a later, unrelated mark() to it instead of TOP_LEVEL.

Replacing finally with an unconditional leaveHole() after get() keeps
every other test green - the new regression test pins exactly this:
it fails only under that mutation (471/471 pass otherwise).
…sponse too

DonutRepository::doPutStatic() (#[CacheableResponse]) reads gate->reason()
the same 'any owner, anywhere' way QueryRepository::doPut() (#[Cacheable])
does, so a sibling hole's mark also collaterally refuses an unrelated
#[CacheableResponse] write, not just #[Cacheable] ones. The limitation
docblocks and the CHANGELOG Added bullet said '#[Cacheable]' only;
broadened both, and referenced the tracking issue (bearsunday#234).
CacheVersionModule only namespaces pools built through this package's
own Storage*Modules (or a #[CacheNamespace]-aware adapter); an app
binding its own cache adapter directly gets no namespace change from
bumping the version and must clear those pools instead. Added this
clause to both the CHANGELOG deploy bullet and README's guard bullet.

@koriym Second follow-up round (head now 6f145c3):

  1. try/finally in ResourceDonut::refresh() — pinned by testRefreshLeavesTheHoleScopeEvenWhenTheReFetchThrows (tests/ResourceDonutTest.php): a fake ResourceInterface whose get() throws, then a balanced enterHole/mark/leaveHole cycle for the same uri probes whether the stack is clean afterward.
    Mutation: replaced finally { leaveHole($uri); } with an unconditional leaveHole($uri) after get().

    vendor/bin/phpunit tests/ResourceDonutTest.php

    → 1 failure (only this test; 470/471 others stay green, matching the earlier report): a later, unrelated top-level check must read TOP_LEVEL, not a scope the aborted re-fetch left stuck on the stack — asserting false got true. Reverted → 471/471 pass.

  2. CacheVersionModule precondition — added one clause to both the CHANGELOG deploy bullet and README's guard bullet: it only namespaces pools built through this package's own Storage*Modules or a #[CacheNamespace]-aware adapter; an app binding its own cache adapter directly must clear those pools instead.

  3. Limitation scope — DonutRepository::doPutStatic() (#[CacheableResponse]) reads gate->reason() the same "any owner, anywhere" way QueryRepository::doPut() (#[Cacheable]) does, so the sibling-collateral-refusal limitation hits both, not just #[Cacheable]. Broadened the CHANGELOG Added bullet and the UncacheableMarkInterface/UnstorableGateInterface docblock wording, referenced mark() refuses unrelated #[Cacheable] siblings later in the same request #234.

Also fixed from the prior review round: stale DonutRepository::refreshDonut() comments that still said the unstorable branch unconditionally sets Cache-Control: private, no-store (no longer true post item-3), a vacuous CDN-header assertion (added a donut-path proof using BlogPostingCacheControl, mutation-confirmed), and re-verified item 1's mutation proof against the final committed test text.

Gate: composer cs 80/80, composer sa no errors, composer phpmd exit 0, vendor/bin/phpunit 471 tests / 0 failures, coverage 100% classes/methods/lines.

The prior probe re-entered the throwing hole's uri (enterHole/mark/
leaveHole) to simulate a sibling visiting it correctly later - works,
but indirect. Marking immediately after the aborted re-fetch and
calling leaveHole($uri) directly tests the same invariant more
plainly: a balanced stack makes that leaveHole() a no-op (the mark
stays filed under TOP_LEVEL, visible); a leaked entry puts $uri back
on top first, so the mark gets filed there instead and leaveHole()
pops it, leaving TOP_LEVEL - which this mark() never touched - looking
unmarked. Re-mutation-proved: fails only under the finally removal.

@koriym Simplified the try/finally regression test's probe per review feedback (head now 09fd044): instead of re-entering the throwing hole's uri to simulate a sibling visiting it correctly, it now marks directly after the aborted re-fetch and calls leaveHole($uri) once - a balanced stack makes that a no-op (mark stays filed under TOP_LEVEL, visible); a leaked entry displaces it first, so leaveHole() pops the wrong thing and TOP_LEVEL reads unmarked. Re-mutation-proved: vendor/bin/phpunit --filter testRefreshLeavesTheHoleScopeEvenWhenTheReFetchThrows fails only when finally is replaced with an unconditional leaveHole() after get(). Noted your direct CHANGELOG edit (5f8775f) - left as-is. Gate: cs/sa/phpmd clean, phpunit 471/0 failures, coverage 100%.
