tidy() runs from post_main and calls remove_target() for every target, which asks each activity agent invoke_if_active and waits for the answer. if that agent lives on a locality that already left, or one thats going away at the same time, the answer never comes and threadmanager::stop hangs forever. this was one of the late_component shutdown hangs. now once this locality is stopping, agents on other localities get treated like disconnected ones and are just dropped instead of asked. local agents are still asked like before and nothing changes while the runtime is running normally

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Remote activity observers are no longer invoked when their locality is disconnected or the runtime is stopping or shutting down. Waiting for remote observers stops if they become unreachable, and observers that return an invalid response are removed.
    • Supervision cleanup waits for active local callbacks to finish before returning.

The supervision manager tracks when tidy() starts. Remote activity-event delivery checks locality and runtime state while polling callbacks. A new unit test covers blocked local callbacks and event delivery across localities.

Changes: Activity observer handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Teardown state tracking
libs/full/supervision/include/hpx/supervision/server/supervision_manager.hpp, libs/full/supervision/src/server/supervision_manager_server.cpp
The manager adds an atomic teardown flag and sets it before removing tracked targets in tidy().
Observer dispatch and teardown tests
libs/full/supervision/src/server/supervision_manager_server.cpp, libs/full/supervision/tests/unit/CMakeLists.txt, libs/full/supervision/tests/unit/supervision_tidy_teardown.cpp
fire_activity_event checks remote agent reachability while polling callbacks. The tests check that tidy() waits for a blocked local callback and that an observer on another locality receives a published event.

The change addresses shutdown hangs, but calling tidy() on a running runtime can silently drop remote activity observers that were registered before the call. Overlapping tidy() calls can also reintroduce the shutdown wait in an edge case. Both should be fixed before merging.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Synchronize remote delivery admission with teardown.

The remote branch checks tearing_down_ before starting invoke_if_active_action, while tidy() sets the flag separately. A remote delivery can therefore pass the check before teardown starts and remain admitted afterward.

invoke_if_active() completes only after its callback returns. A successfully sent packaged action depends on the remote continuation, so it can remain pending when the remote runtime stops before returning that continuation. The unbounded keep_registered.get() then keeps notification delivery, remove_target(), and tidy() waiting during shutdown.

Synchronize the teardown gate with remote delivery admission. Also fence or cancel deliveries admitted before teardown, or provide a bounded completion path for them.

Thanks, the direction looks good to me, but one hang path is still open (3.):

  1. The CodeRabbit comment was valid, and 46641e4 addresses it correctly. post_main() runs right after hpx_main returns (runtime_distributed::run_helper), and at that point finalize() has only posted shutdown_all, so the runtime is usually still in state::running and is_stopped_or_shutting_down() is false. The first commit alone therefore didn't cover the tidy() path, which is the one from the description. The tearing_down_ flag covers it, and since the server instance is owned by the runtime's supervision_manager_, it can't leak into a later runtime instance.

  2. This changes what remote observers see during teardown: an activity agent on a locality that is still alive no longer gets the last_observer_unregistered notifications for the targets tidy() removes; it is dropped instead. That is the right trade-off at shutdown, but please mention it in the comment of tidy() (or in fire_activity_event()) so nobody relies on those notifications later.

  3. The second CodeRabbit comment (outside the diff, on 46641e4) is valid as well: a fire_activity_event() that passed the check before tidy() set the flag (for instance from a publish_event() on another HPX thread) is already blocked in keep_registered.get(), and the flag doesn't help it, so it can still keep tidy() or the thread manager waiting if the reply never comes. I don't think a lock around the admission check is needed; it is simpler to make the wait itself give up once teardown starts, which covers both the admission race and the deliveries admitted earlier. Something like:

// wait in slices, so that a reply that never comes (the agent's
// locality left) doesn't block teardown
while (keep_registered.wait_for(std::chrono::milliseconds(100)) !=
    hpx::future_status::ready)
{
    if (tearing_down_.load(std::memory_order_acquire) ||
        hpx::is_stopped_or_shutting_down() ||
        parcelset::locality_was_disconnected(agent_locality))
    {
        break; // drop the agent, see above
    }
}
erase_agent = !keep_registered.is_ready() || !keep_registered.get();

The shared state is reference counted, so a reply arriving after the future was abandoned is harmless.

  1. There is no test. Could you say how you verified the fix, for instance how often the late_component_launcher example hung before and after the change?

fire_activity_event() can pass the unreachable check just before tidy() sets tearing_down_ and then wait forever in keep_registered.get() if the agent's reply never arrives. Wait in 100 ms slices and drop the agent once teardown starts, the runtime starts shutting down, or the agent's locality disconnects.

Also document that remote activity observers on localities that are still alive no longer receive last_observer_unregistered notifications during tidy().

Add a regression test that blocks an activity callback, calls tidy(), and checks that tidy() gives up on it.

Thanks for the quick iterations. 9814890 addresses the three CodeRabbit points (local agents are always waited for, remote observers stay registered during a tidy() on a running runtime, overlapping calls are counted), and the new test covers both halves. One design point is left, and I think it would also simplify the change:

  1. The counter skips remote deliveries for every event fired on this locality while any tidy() runs, not only for the notifications tidy() itself sends. A publish_event() or record_error() from another thread that overlaps an active-runtime tidy() now drops its remote notifications silently: the observer stays registered, but it never learns about that event. So the counter keeps remote observers registered across a tidy() on a running runtime, but they still miss events during it, and it costs a fair amount of machinery for a use that nothing in HPX has.

  2. The skip is only needed on the shutdown path, and post_main() is the only caller of tidy() outside the tests. There the runtime is still in state::running, so is_stopped_or_shutting_down() can't catch it (this is why the flag was added in the first place). I'd rather define tidy() as what it is used for: the teardown of this locality's supervision state at shutdown. Then the flag set by tidy() can stay set (as in 46641e4; this takes back my earlier request to reset it when tidy() returns, sorry for the back and forth), and:

    • the counter, the scope guard and the keep_agent branch go away,
    • overlapping calls are no issue, since nothing clears the flag,
    • the in-flight case is the existing check: remote && (tearing_down_ || is_stopped_or_shutting_down()), and dropping the remote agent is right, since nothing has to stay registered once the locality is stopping.
      The supervision module is new in 2.0, so there is no released behavior of tidy() to keep.
  3. Please document this in the doxygen comments of tidy() (both supervision_manager.hpp headers): it is meant for shutdown, and after it remote agents are no longer waited for or notified. The public description currently says it acts "as if remove_target() had been called" for each target. The test that calls tidy() on a running runtime and expects remote observers to keep working would then go, while the local-agent test stays.

Thanks, 6be4ad0 looks good to me. The sticky tearing_down_ flag is simpler than the counter and removes the dropped-notification window: before teardown every delivery goes through as before, and after it remote agents are neither waited for nor notified, which the new \note on both tidy() declarations documents.

Moving the teardown from post_main() to a pre-shutdown function is also right, and it is needed with a sticky flag: runtime_distributed::run_helper() calls post_main_() as soon as the locality's main function returns, which on worker localities is right after startup. With tidy() there, every worker locality would have set the flag (and dropped its supervision state) at startup. register_pre_shutdown_function() runs it on every locality when the application actually shuts down, after cancel_supervision_waiters.

One optional point: with the two-locality test removed, nothing exercises the shutdown path with a remote activity agent anymore (the case #7866 was opened for). A small LOCALITIES 2 test that registers an observer on the other locality and simply lets the application shut down, so that a hang shows up as a test timeout, would keep that covered. I would not hold the PR for it.
