Align the per-worker scheduler data to the cache line size - #7845
Conversation
util::cache_line_data only pads, so the elements of the per-worker vectors start wherever the allocation starts and usually share a cache line with the neighboring worker's element. Add aligned_line_data and use it for the per-worker vectors of scheduler_base, local_priority_queue_scheduler and local_workrequesting_scheduler. Align thread_queue as well and declare its padded counters first, so each of them is on its own cache line. All of this data is allocated only when a scheduler is created. The three scheduler vectors are count-constructed with
num_threads. Sincealigned_line_datahas no user-provided constructor, each wrapper is value-initialized, including its alignment padding. Mirrorutil::cache_aligned_dataso scheduler creation initializes onlydata_.Suggested fix

Define hpx::util::aligned_line_data in hpx/concurrency/cache_line_data.hpp, next to util::cache_line_data, instead of in scheduler_base.hpp. Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>

Add a default and a forwarding constructor that initialize only data_, as util::cache_aligned_data does. Without them, value-initializing the aggregate zeroes the whole cache line, padding included. Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>

The value is written to the generated header unchanged, where C++ reads a leading zero as an octal number. Accept only decimal numbers without leading zeros (which also rules out 0). Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>

Proposed Changes
hpx::util::aligned_line_data<T>next toutil::cache_line_data<T>(hpx/concurrency/cache_line_data.hpp), a wrapper that is aligned tothreads::get_cache_line_size(), and use it instead ofutil::cache_line_data<T>for the per-worker vectors ofscheduler_base(modes_,wait_count_data_,states_) and oflocal_priority_queue_scheduler(bound_queues_,queues_,high_priority_queues_,victims_).util::cache_line_dataonly pads its data to a multiple of the cache line size, so the elements of a vector start wherever the allocation starts, and each of them usually straddles two cache lines, sharing one with the neighboring worker's element.aligned_line_datafor the per-workerdata_vector oflocal_workrequesting_scheduleras well.thread_queueto the cache line size and declare its padded counters (new_tasks_count_,work_items_count_) first, so each of them is on its own cache line. Before, they were the last members of an object allocated with the default heap alignment, so they shared cache lines with each other and with the members in front of them.Any background context you want to provide?
Padding is still preferred for types that are allocated all the time, as over-aligned types take the aligned allocation path. All of the data aligned here is allocated only when a scheduler is created (the scheduler itself is now over-aligned as well, since it holds
low_priority_queue_by value), so that cost doesn't matter.The spawn throughput of a process that spawns tasks to its own queue on 8 workers (local-priority scheduler) is bimodal on master: some processes run all of their repetitions noticeably slower than others. With this change most of the slow processes are gone (Windows, MSVC, Xeon w7-3565X, 32 cores, 50 processes per variant, 5 repetitions each, "slow" = below 1.85 M tasks/s):
thread_queuealigned onlyAligning only
thread_queuedoesn't help, the per-worker vectors of the scheduler are what matters.Throughput of
sched_bench(300000 tasks, 5 repetitions per process, 12 interleaved rounds, M tasks/s, ratio to master):The work-requesting scheduler (
--hpx:queuing=local-workrequesting-fifo) is not bimodal on this machine, neither before nor after: all 50 processes of both variants run at a median of 0.84 M tasks/s. Its throughput doesn't change (ratio to master, 12 interleaved rounds):On Linux (medusa08, clang 18), the performance CI shows no regression for this change (Jenkins build 6145; the regressions reported for build 6144 came from a problem of the machine during that run).
The other schedulers get the aligned
scheduler_basedata andthread_queueas well; their own per-worker vectors (e.g. inlocal_queue_scheduler) are left as they are for now.Checklist
