A worker handling a steal request sent tasks to the requesting worker regardless of hpx.thread_queue.min_tasks_to_steal_pending, as it took them from its queue with allow_stealing = false. Since TheHPXProject#7726 made the work-requesting schedulers hand out tasks, this made the min_tasks_to_steal_staged test fail intermittently on CI, which runs the tests with --hpx:queuing=local-workrequesting-fifo. thread_queue::get_next_threads compared the minimum with the number of requested items instead of all pending items, which refused to steal fewer items than the minimum however many were pending. Adds a --scheduler option to the min_tasks_to_steal_staged test, which selects the scheduler through the resource partitioner, so that it can be registered for the work-requesting scheduler without conflicting with --hpx:queuing given through HPX_WITH_TESTS_COMMAND_LINE. 🟡 Minor · Update the staged-stealing settings documentation… · local_workrequesting_scheduler.hpp:1951-1957
libs/core/schedulers/include/hpx/schedulers/local_workrequesting_scheduler.hpp:1951-1957
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winUpdate the staged-stealing settings documentation for work-requesting schedulers.
The PR applies both settings to work-requesting schedulers. The manual still says they apply only to the local-priority scheduler and that other schedulers start after
hpx.max_idle_loop_count / 2. This gives users incorrect configuration expectations.Suggested fix
- |hpx| tasks from other cores (local priority queue scheduler only, other - schedulers start after ``hpx.max_idle_loop_count / 2`` iterations). It + |hpx| tasks from other cores. For local priority queue and work-requesting + schedulers, this property controls when staged stealing starts. Other + schedulers start after ``hpx.max_idle_loop_count / 2`` iterations. It has no effect if fast idle mode is on, which steals staged tasks right away. ... - ``hpx.thread_queue.idle_loop_count_steal_staged`` iterations (local - priority queue scheduler only). Cores that have been idle for - ``hpx.max_idle_loop_count / 2`` iterations steal staged tasks - regardless. + ``hpx.thread_queue.idle_loop_count_steal_staged`` iterations for the + local priority queue and work-requesting schedulers. After + ``hpx.max_idle_loop_count / 2`` iterations, cores steal staged tasks + regardless.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Thanks, the approach (the victim converts staged tasks directly into the requesting worker's queue under the claimed task channel) looks right to me, and wait_or_add_new with an explicit source queue is the same path the local-priority scheduler uses for staged stealing. A few points:
-
wait_or_add_newnow handles steal requests before converting its own staged tasks, but it ignoresallow_stealing.get_next_threadonly answers requests with tasks whenallow_stealingis set and otherwise just declines or forwards them (decline_or_forward_one_steal_requests). As it is, a worker with stealing disabled still hands out staged tasks from here. Please use the sameif (allow_stealing) ... else decline_or_forward_one_steal_requests(d)pattern. -
Please keep
handle_steal_requestnoexceptand remove thetry/catch. Ifthief_queue->wait_or_add_newthrows, the steal request is lost anyway: the requesting worker keepsrequested_ != 0and never sends another steal request, so the scheduler can't recover from this state. -
A staged steal is acknowledged with an empty
task_data, sotry_receiving_taskson the thief takes the "nothing received" path:num_recent_steals_is not incremented andlast_victim_is not updated (withHPX_HAVE_WORKREQUESTING_LAST_VICTIM). Successful staged steals then count like failed ones in the steal-half heuristic. Could the acknowledgement carry the number of converted tasks (or a flag), so that the thief can account for them? -
The staged minimum is computed from the thief's
idle_loop_countwhen the request is created and stays the same while the request circulates, also when it is re-sent from the "continue circulating" branch ofdecline_or_forward_steal_request. That's probably fine, but it would be good to mention it in a comment next tomin_tasks_to_steal_staged_. -
Nit: the new test file has

I'll take another look once #7771 is merged and this is rebased.

Correction: point 1 of my review is already addressed by a11271d, which I hadn't seen when I wrote it. Sorry for the noise. The other points still apply. I agree with CodeRabbit's remaining comment: |

Fixes #7772
Proposed Changes
Any background context you want to provide?
This is based on #7771 because pending and staged stealing share the same request handler. The first commit in this branch is #7771 unchanged; once #7771 merges, this PR will contain only the two #7772 commits.
Validation: the target and all 16 scheduler unit tests pass in a Release C++20 build with work-requesting schedulers enabled.
