Stop a blank page after a PWA update - #142
Conversation
A missing hashed asset returned the app page with a one-year immutable cache header, and the service worker cached any successful response. During a deploy it could keep HTML in place of a script. A failed page chunk then removed the whole app until a hard reload. - Return an uncached 404 for missing files under /assets/, /fonts/, /icons/, and /sounds/. - Precache from the network, reject wrong responses before any file is stored, and keep only the final response after a redirect. Production redirects /offline.html to /offline, so the offline page needs this. - Catch page and message editor failures. Reload once after a load failure, then offer Reload. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Missing scripts can still receive app HTML instead of a 404, so this change does not yet protect the affected update path. Correct asset routing and lookup before merging. Pre-merge checks |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reset the page boundary when the route changes.
If a page fails while rendering, LoadBoundary keeps its fallback until resetKey changes. activeFolder stays the same when a user changes settings tabs, contacts, or draft selections. Those route changes therefore cannot clear the failed page. Use a key that includes the relevant route identity, while retaining a stable key during ordinary page updates. (react.dev)

Isolate the optional draft dialog from the page boundary.
A render error, or a repeated lazy-load failure after the automatic reload, can make the shared page LoadBoundary replace both DraftComposeDialog and DraftsPage with the page fallback. Dismissing the dialog does not reset that boundary because activeFolder remains unchanged. Wrap the optional dialog in its own notice boundary so the draft list remains usable.

Service Worker Cache API addAll algorithm rollback failure cache.put specification
💡 Result:
**Yes—`Cache.addAll()` is specified as an all-or-nothing batch.** It first waits for all fetches to succeed, then submits their responses as `put` operations in one batch. If a fetch fails, the promise rejects before the cache batch is applied. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/service-workers/))
If a cache write fails during the batch—for example, because it exceeds quota—the **Batch Cache Operations** algorithm restores the cache from a backup and rethrows the exception. That rollback covers changes made by the batch, not unrelated earlier cache contents or separate operations. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/service-workers/))
So the rollback is specified at the batch-operation level; it isn’t implemented as a sequence of ordinary `cache.put()` calls followed by compensating deletes. The cited source is the current Service Workers Nightly specification. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/service-workers/))

Clean up partial precache entries after a write failure.
If one cache.put() rejects, other writes can complete before Promise.all rejects. A failed install can therefore leave partial entries in CACHE_NAME. A retry with the same package version can reuse those entries and hit the quota again. The previous cache.addAll() operation rolled back its batch on failure.
Wait for all writes to settle. Delete the cache only when this install created it, so an existing cache used by an active worker remains intact.

Cloudflare Workers Static Assets run_worker_first not_found_handling single-page-application unmatched asset official documentation
💡 Result:
Cloudflare documents these options together:
- Set `assets.not_found_handling = "single-page-application"` to serve `/index.html` with **200 OK** when no asset matches. ([developers.cloudflare.com](https://developers.cloudflare.com/workers/static-assets/routing/single-page-application/?utm_source=openai))
- `assets.run_worker_first` can be `true` (Worker first on every request) or an array of route patterns for selective Worker-first handling. Unmatched requests that reach asset serving retain the SPA fallback. ([developers.cloudflare.com](https://developers.cloudflare.com/workers/static-assets/binding/?utm_source=openai))
- Example: route API requests through the Worker while leaving other paths asset-first:
```toml
[assets]
directory = "./dist"
not_found_handling = "single-page-application"
run_worker_first = ["/api/*"]
```
With selective patterns, routing is explicit rather than based on browser navigation headers. ([developers.cloudflare.com](https://developers.cloudflare.com/workers/static-assets/routing/single-page-application/?utm_source=openai))
**Important distinction:** SPA fallback means an unmatched *asset request* can return `index.html`; it doesn’t guarantee every unmatched URL does. A path routed to the Worker first is handled by your Worker, so return the SPA shell yourself if you want a fallback there. Cloudflare’s routing diagram shows that unmatched assets reaching asset serving are rewritten to `/index.html`; if that file is missing, the result is 404. ([developers.cloudflare.com](https://developers.cloudflare.com/workers/static-assets/routing/single-page-application/?utm_source=openai))

Route static-file misses through a 404-capable asset lookup.
The configured run_worker_first routes exclude /assets/*, /fonts/*, /icons/*, and /sounds/*. Cloudflare serves existing files before invoking this Worker. For missing files, not_found_handling: "single-page-application" serves /index.html with 200 OK. Therefore this 404 branch does not run, and a missing script can still receive HTML and fail to load.
Change the asset routing and lookup together so existing files remain served and only missing static files return 404. Adding these prefixes to run_worker_first alone would make the current unconditional branch return 404 for existing files.

Why
After an update from 1.4.0 to 1.4.2, Reload showed a blank page until a hard reload
(Cmd+Shift+R). The exact trigger is not proven yet; a reproduction from 1.4.0 to 1.4.3 is in
progress. These defects can each cause the symptom, and each is confirmed:
/assets/returns the app page. On a live 1.4.2 instance,GET /assets/index-DOESNOTEXIST.jsreturns200,text/html, andCache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable. The Worker passes the miss toenv.ASSETS.fetch, which uses the single-page-app fallback, and_headersmarks/assets/*immutable.
cache.addAll) accepts any successful response and reads throughthe browser cache. If the new service worker downloads its files while some requests still reach
the old Worker version, it can keep HTML in place of a script.
Reload opens Settings → Updates first, which is a lazy chunk.
Also found: production redirects
/offline.htmlto/offline(307).cache.addAllstores theredirected response, and a navigation cannot use a stored redirect, so the offline page probably
fails in production.
pnpm test:pwadoes not see this becausevite previewdoes not redirect.Changes
worker/index.ts: return404withCache-Control: no-storefor a missing file under/assets/,/fonts/,/icons/, or/sounds/. Existing files never reach the Worker, so onlymisses change. Client routes still get the app page.
scripts/build-pwa.mjs: the service worker fetches each file withcache: "reload". It requiresa success status, and HTML only for
/offline.html. It stores files only after all files pass,so a failed install leaves nothing partial. It keeps only the final response after a redirect.
app/components/layout/load-boundary.tsx(new):lazyComponentmarks import failures, andLoadBoundarycatches page and message editor failures. After a load failure it reloads once(recorded in
sessionStorage). If the failure repeats within one minute, or a part fails while itshows, it shows "HQBase could not open this page." or "...the message editor." with Reload.
The sidebar and the rest of the app stay visible.
app/workspace-pages.tsxandapp/features/compose/composer-host.tsx: use both.Effect on updates: the service worker change protects the update to the release that contains
it, because the new service worker runs the install. The Worker change protects later updates.
Old 1.4.x caches are deleted when the new service worker activates.
Tests
