feat: Resilion.Http, pipeline reload, and a real public API gate - #6
The pull request adds Resilion.Http handlers and expands configuration-driven pipeline registration, reload, and keyed resolution. It also adds core resilience APIs and behavior changes, updates CI and release checks, and revises documentation and benchmarks.
Changes: Core Resilience APIs and Execution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Core APIs and pipeline behavior src/Resilion/CircuitBreaker/*, src/Resilion/PredicateBuilder.cs, src/Resilion/Pipeline*.cs, src/Resilion/Internal/PipelineComponent.cs, tests/Resilion.Tests/*
Adds circuit-breaker state observation and predicate builders, exposes pipeline names, makes disposal idempotent, and throws on typed-strategy result mismatches.
Adds per-attempt hedging delay generation. Async execution resolves delays per attempt, while synchronous execution rejects a configured generator.
Timeout classification and telemetry src/Resilion/Timeout/TimeoutStrategy.cs, src/Resilion/Telemetry/*, src/Resilion/{CircuitBreaker,Fallback,Hedging,Retry}/*, src/Resilion.RateLimiting/RateLimiterStrategy.cs, tests/Resilion.Tests/Timeout/*, tests/Resilion.Tests/Telemetry/*
Records the first cancellation cause and uses a shared activity helper for strategy spans and outcomes. Tests cover timeout classification, tags, and metric behavior.
Registers pipelines as keyed singletons and tests their resolution, identity, and reload behavior.
HTTP Resilience Integration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
HTTP options and public contracts src/Resilion.Http/HttpRequestReplay.cs, src/Resilion.Http/HttpStandard*Options.cs, src/Resilion.Http/HttpResiliencePredicates.cs, src/Resilion.Http/PublicAPI.*.txt, src/Resilion.Http/Resilion.Http.csproj
Adds replay modes, standard handler options, transient predicates, and access to the current request through a resilience context.
HTTP pipeline construction and registration src/Resilion.Http/ResilionHttpClientBuilderExtensions.cs, src/Resilion.Http/Internal/HttpPipelineFactory.cs, tests/Resilion.Http.Tests/Standard*HandlerTests.cs, tests/Resilion.Http.Tests/CustomResilienceHandlerTests.cs
Registers standard, hedging, and custom pipelines for HttpClient, with configuration callbacks and time-provider setup.
Request replay and response ownership src/Resilion.Http/Internal/ResilienceHandler.cs, src/Resilion.Http/Internal/HttpRequestMessageCloner.cs, src/Resilion.Http/Internal/HttpAttemptTracker.cs, tests/Resilion.Http.Tests/RequestReplayTests.cs, tests/Resilion.Http.Tests/ResponseDisposalTests.cs
Implements request reuse or cloning and tracks responses from attempts. Tests cover request replay and disposal expectations.
Build, Release, Documentation, and Benchmarks

Update the stale PredicateBuilder claim in the "Outcome-Based Resilience" section.
Line 89 says "No PredicateBuilder or PredicateResult chains." This PR adds public PredicateBuilder<TResult> and PredicateBuilder. docs/comparison-with-polly.md also says they ship in core. The README now contradicts both.
Reword the sentence. For example, say that a plain Func<Outcome<T>, bool> is always enough and that PredicateBuilder<T> is optional.

This test cannot fail if subscription disposal is removed.
RegistryDispose_DisposesReloadSubscriptions does not assert that the subscription is disposed. If Dispose skips _reloadSubscriptions, the listener still calls InvalidatePipeline on a cleared registry. That call returns false and does not throw. The test passes either way.
The disposal-before-teardown ordering in ResiliencePipelineRegistry.Dispose is not protected. Register a stub IOptionsMonitor<RetryOptions> whose OnChange returns a disposable that records Dispose(). Assert that flag after registry.Dispose().

Update RegistryDispose_DisposesReloadSubscriptions to use a stub
IOptionsMonitor<RetryOptions> whose OnChange subscription returns a disposable
that records disposal. Assert the recorded flag after registry.Dispose() so the
test verifies the reload subscription is disposed.
IOptionsMonitor<TOptions>.OnChange fires for every named instance of TOptions. The listener ignores the name argument. A change to one named instance therefore invalidates every pipeline bound to that TOptions type.
A rebuilt pipeline is a new pipeline. A circuit breaker restarts closed with an empty window. If "api" and "billing" read from different sources, a reload of the "billing" source resets the "api" breaker. Compare the changed name with _optionsName ?? Options.DefaultName before you invalidate.
Proposed fix (untyped configurator; apply the same change to the typed one)
- var subscription = monitor.OnChange((_, _) => registry.InvalidatePipeline(_name));+ var watched = _optionsName ?? Options.DefaultName;+ var subscription = monitor.OnChange((_, changedName) =>+ {+ if (string.Equals(changedName ?? Options.DefaultName, watched, StringComparison.Ordinal))+ {+ registry.InvalidatePipeline(_name);+ }+ });

Microsoft Testing Platform is already configured.
tests/Directory.Build.props applies TestingPlatformDotnetTestSupport=true to the test projects and references xunit.v3. The missing xunit.runner.visualstudio reference does not establish that dotnet test skips these tests.
The placeholder ratios are valid BenchmarkDotNet output.
BenchmarkDotNet uses ? when the baseline is too close to zero for ratio calculation. The DirectCall baseline is 0.0064 ns, and it has no allocation baseline. The placeholders do not require replacement or separate preservation.

Distinguish measured data from allocation attribution.
PipelineOverheadBenchmarks contains only the composite benchmark, and its report contains no isolated timeout result. TimeoutStrategy supports the qualitative explanation, but the checked-in source does not establish the exact 32 B contribution, registration cost, or the 360 B → 392 B measurement. Keep the composite allocation as measured, but label the detailed breakdown and isolated comparison as an attribution unless a supporting benchmark report is added.

Correct the claim that a bare number does not bind to TimeSpan.
ConfigurationBinder converts TimeSpan values with the framework TimeSpanConverter. That converter calls TimeSpan.Parse. TimeSpan.Parse("30") returns 30 days, so a bare number binds without error. A user who writes "Timeout": "30" expecting seconds gets a 30-day timeout.
Replace the sentence with a warning that a bare integer binds as days. Tell users to always write hh:mm:ss.

Use the same HttpClient.Timeout in every benchmark arm.
BuildResilion and BuildBare keep the 100-second HttpClient default. The Polly 8.10.0 standard handler sets that timeout to infinite. On .NET 8, the finite timeout creates a linked cancellation source and schedules cancellation for each request. The comparison therefore includes this work in the bare and Resilion arms but not the Polly arm. Set the bare and Resilion clients to infinite timeout before comparing handler time and marginal allocations. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document the command used for the HTTP full run.
The command at the top of this file selects --job short, but this section reports DefaultJob results. A reader who follows the stated command cannot reproduce this table or its error bars. Mark the rate limiter as optional in this mapping.
AddStandardResilienceHandler() adds the rate limiter only when HttpStandardResilienceOptions.RateLimiter is configured. The default is off. Replace “Same five strategies” with wording that identifies the optional rate limiter.

Remove the stale "gap note" claim for strategies nested inside hedging.
Line 27 says pipeline.name is null for any strategy nested inside hedging. It also refers to a "gap note below". No such note exists. Lines 37-38 say the opposite: nested strategies carry the enclosing pipeline name, and NestedStrategyInsideHedging_EmitsPipelineNameTag pins this. This PR also copies PipelineName into the per-attempt contexts in HedgingStrategy.

Isolate exceptions thrown by OnPipelineReplaced.
InvalidatePipeline calls OnPipelineReplaced directly. It runs inside the IOptionsMonitor<TOptions>.OnChange listener that MonitoredPipelineConfigurator registers. If a user callback throws, for example a logger or a disposal scheduler, the exception escapes into the options monitor's listener loop. The monitor then skips the remaining listeners, so other pipelines bound to the same options type do not invalidate on that change. The cache entry is already removed at that point. This leaves the callback failure and the other pipelines' reload state coupled.
Catch exceptions around the callback. Do this in one helper that both InvalidatePipeline overloads call. Surface the failure through a channel that does not break reload.
- OnPipelineReplaced?.Invoke(- new PipelineReplacedArgs<TKey>(key, typeof(TResult), disposable));+ NotifyReplaced(new PipelineReplacedArgs<TKey>(key, typeof(TResult), disposable));
Add the helper to the class:
privatevoidNotifyReplaced(PipelineReplacedArgs<TKey>args){try{OnPipelineReplaced?.Invoke(args);}catch{// A faulty observer must not stop other pipelines from reloading.}}

<title>Trimming options - .NET | Microsoft Learn</title>
<location>https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/deploying/trimming/trimming-options?pivots=dotnet-8-0</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search3 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: yesterday; Some of the options mention `ILLink`, which is the name of the underlying tool that implements trimming. ... NET 8 and later apps, this setting also enables the configuration binding and request delegate source generators. ... * `<EnableTrimAnalyzer>true</EnableTrimAnalyzer>` ... There's an additional option that controls the ILLink warn-as-error behavior independently: ... NET 6+, trim analysis produces at most one warning for each assembly that comes from a `PackageReference`, indicating that the assembly's internals are not compatible with trimming.
The MSBuild properties and items described in this article influence the behavior of trimmed, self-contained deployments. Some of the options mention `ILLink`, which is the name of the underlying tool that implements trimming. For more information about the underlying tool, see the Trimmer documentation.
Trimming with `PublishTrimmed` was introduced in .NET Core 3.0. The other options are available in .NET 5 and later versions.
## Enable trimming
* `<PublishTrimmed>true</PublishTrimmed>`
Enable trimming during publish. This setting also turns off trim-incompatible features and enables trim analysis during build. In .NET 8 and later apps, this setting also enables the configuration binding and request delegate source generators.
Note
If you specify trimming as enabled from the command line, your debugging experience will differ and you might encounter additional bugs in the final product.
Place this setting in the project file to ensure that the setting applies during `dotnet build`, not just `dotnet publish`.
This setting also enables the trim-compatibility Roslyn analyzer and disables features that are incompatible with trimming.
## Roslyn analyzer
Setting `PublishTrimmed` in .NET 6+ also enables a Roslyn analyzer that shows a limited set of analysis warnings. You can also enable or disable the analyzer independently of `PublishTrimmed`.
* `<EnableTrimAnalyzer>true</EnableTrimAnalyzer>`
Enable a Roslyn analyzer for a subset of trim analysis warnings.
## Suppress warnings
You can suppress individual warning codes using the usual MSBuild properties respected by the toolchain, including `NoWarn`, `WarningsAsErrors`, `WarningsNotAsErrors`, and `TreatWarningsAsErrors`. There's an additional option that controls the ILLink warn-as-error behavior independently:
* `<ILLinkTreatWarningsAsErrors>false</ILLinkTreatWarningsAsErrors>`
Don't treat ILLink warnings as errors. This might be useful to avoid turning trim analysis warnings into errors when treating compiler warnings as errors globally.
## Show detailed warnings
In .NET 6+, trim analysis produces at most one warning for each assembly that comes from a `PackageReference`, indicating that the assembly's internals are not compatible with trimming. You can also show individual warnings for all assemblies:
* `<TrimmerSingleWarn>false</TrimmerSingleWarn>`
Show all detailed warnings, instead of collapsing them to a single warning per assembly.
## Remove symbols
Symbols are usually trimmed to match the trimmed assemblies. You can also remove all symbols:
* `<TrimmerRemoveSymbols>true</TrimmerRemoveSymbols>`
Remove symbols from the trimmed application, including embedded PDBs and separate PDB files. This applies to both the application code and any dependencies that come with symbols.
The SDK also makes it possible to disable debugger support using the property `DebuggerSupport`. When debugger support is disabled, trimming removes symbols automatically (`TrimmerRemoveSymbols` will default to true).

Annotate TOptions for trim analysis.
The .NET 8 IOptionsMonitor<TOptions> contract requires PublicParameterlessConstructor. Add the annotation to both monitored configurator classes and all four public options-backed overloads.
The AOT job builds Resilion.Extensions transitively, but the project sets IsAotCompatible=false, and the job does not treat IL2091 as an error. This is a trim-analysis warning cleanup, not a demonstrated CI failure.

Point the returned response's RequestMessage back to the caller's request.
In CloneRequest mode, and always in the hedging handler, the primary handler receives a clone. SocketsHttpHandler sets response.RequestMessage to the request it sent, which is that clone. The finally block at Lines 177-181 then disposes the clone before the winning response reaches the caller. As a result:
response.RequestMessage is not the HttpRequestMessage that the caller passed to SendAsync.
This affects code that reads the request from the response, such as logging handlers above this one and error-reporting code. The stub tests miss this because StubHttpMessageHandler never sets RequestMessage. Before you return the winner, set its RequestMessage to the original request.

Review comment at @src/Resilion.Http/Internal/ResilienceHandler.cs around lines
123 - 124:
Before returning the winning response in ResilienceHandler, set its
RequestMessage to the original caller request so it does not reference a
disposed clone. Apply this only when a winner exists and its RequestMessage is
not already the original request; preserve the existing outcome return behavior.
