Let batteries detect their phase next to steered ones (#732) - #735
Conversation
…ator Disassembled the phase detection in the HMG-50 v156 and VNSE3-0 v151 Control images (and the B2500 HMJ-2 v110 routine) and wrote it up under "Battery-side phase detection" in docs/ct002-ct003-protocol.md: the phase byte and when it is sent as 0, the triggers, the BMS gate, one attempt step by step (zero, baseline, probe, threshold, decision, timeout, retries), what a reply must satisfy (CT type, bound CT MAC, changing info_idx), and the B2500's separate state machine. The simulator gains astrameter.simulator.phase_detection, a pass-by-pass reimplementation of both Venus detectors, and BatterySimulator takes phase_detection=True (opt-in; existing scenarios are unchanged). With it the battery reports what it detects, steers only once it has a phase, on that phase's bucket, and handles replies the way the firmware parser does. The B2500 is documented but not modelled: its probe power, timeout and "producing" field are not resolved yet. Also corrects the "full discharge, then full charge" sweep description in the protocol notes, the inspection-filter comments (Python and ESPHome) and the issue #652 test docstring: the firmware probes with one step in one direction. Tests: unit tests per firmware rule, battery reply handling, and an e2e baseline (both families, each phase, Python and ESPHome backends). …able During a meter outage both stacks answered every battery with a [0, 0, 0] hold (issue #403). A battery detecting its phase compares each reading it accepts with the baseline it took before probing, so the zeros read as a move on every phase that carried load: an HMG-50 ends detection with phase 5 for good, and a Venus can store a wrong phase, typically D from the total. The emulator now leaves such a poll unanswered (Python _serve, ESPHome handle_request_); the battery keeps its last real reading and waits or times out and retries. Steered batteries still get the hold. New e2e scenarios (Python and ESPHome backends) drive the firmware detector through: a battery joining one that already steers, on another phase and on its own; a meter outage mid-probe; a meter not ready at startup; a slow meter; a charging probe at low SoC; and CT003 with per-phase and total-only meters. The outage and startup cases failed before this fix. The simulator's firmware mode now honours the "sum all phases" setting (dchrg_t, factory default 1): with it the battery steers on total_power divided by the sum of all bucket counts, as the firmware does. The parity test and the unit test that pinned the zero hold for inspection polls now expect no reply. A battery reporting phase 0 is answered with the raw reading and never steered, yet both stacks counted it in the balancer's pool: it was handed a fair share it never takes, and the balance term pulled the steered batteries toward its reported output. Next to a battery stuck in detection at ~0 W, as the Venus E Mini in issue #732, an HMG-50 covered only about three quarters of the load (share=141 for grid=282 in the reporter's log; 41/78/150 W left on the grid for 150/300/600 W of load in the simulator, CT002 and CT003, per-phase and total-only meter alike). The pool (Python _compute_smooth_target, ESPHome collect_reports_for_balancer_) now holds only batteries on a steered phase, and peak shaving no longer counts a detecting battery's output as steered demand. New tests: a unit test pinning the neighbour's correction (132.6 W before, 282 W after, for the reporter's numbers), and an e2e scenario on both backends with a battery whose detection cannot start next to a steered one, including the reporter's CT003 / total-only setup. Detection itself is unaffected: the reporter's setup detects in all 16 simulated variants before and after. The steering evaluation is neutral (priority-weighted -0.1%, no guardrail regressions). A battery detecting its phase steps its own output and watches which phase of the reading follows. AstraMeter saw that step as a grid change and steered the other batteries to cancel it, so a slowly ramping step never moved the reading by the threshold (same phase) or moved a second phase too (another phase; an HMG-50 then gives up). In the simulator, with a steering HMG-50 next to a battery ramping at 50-100 W/s, 16 of 32 detections failed for good; leaving phase-0 batteries out of the steering pool (d77a82f) had made this worse, from 1 of 32, by handing the neighbour the full correction. Active control now steers on the grid as it would read without the step: the power batteries on phase 0 report is added back onto the total (Python _probe_output, ESPHome probe_output_). That keeps their output out of peak shaving's demand too. A battery reporting 0, such as one stuck in detection, adds nothing, so the pool fix still holds for it. Batteries do report the step while detecting. HMG-50 v156 and VNSE3-0 v151 fill the power field in work modes Auto and AI (0 in Manual and Passive), and detection leaves the mode alone. The B2500 (HMJ-2 v110) always sends its two DC channels' output, g1 + g2. The issue #652 log shows a real Venus E 3.0 on phase 0 reporting 0, 232, 1603, 1941, then 1993 W before committing to A. Simulator: slow-ramp failures 16/32 -> 0/32 on the same phase; with a neighbour on another phase and a per-phase meter, 3/144 -> 0/144, and the worst grid excursion during detection stays at the probe itself (800 W). New unit and e2e tests (both backends) fail before and pass after. The steering evaluation is neutral (no guardrail regressions). WalkthroughThe change adds HMG-50 and Venus phase-detection behavior to the battery simulator. CT002 excludes batteries still detecting their phase from active steering while accounting for their reported output. Phase-detection requests receive no response when the meter is unavailable. On Python 3.10, asyncio.wait_for raises asyncio.TimeoutError, which is not the built-in TimeoutError until 3.11. The simulated battery only caught the built-in one, so an unanswered poll crashed it instead of counting as a failed poll. That never mattered while the emulator answered every poll; now it stays silent towards a battery detecting its phase during a meter outage, which broke the phase-detection E2E tests on 3.10. The three fixes are one change for #732, and the changelog takes one bullet per change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_014H5tgBTWQQnbJaLzGpiZQE
VNSD-0 v151 was compared with VNSE3-0 v151 instruction by instruction. The phase-detection routine, the CT reply parser and the MQTT seq_check / rechrg_seq handler are the same code; only some fields of one structure sit a byte lower. The power setter that detection and steering both go through (0x0800a968) adds two PV rules the Venus E 3.0 does not have: - charging gives way to PV: once a PV input delivers more than 10 W, AC charging is cut so PV plus AC charging stays within the charge limit (capped at 2500 W); - surplus feed-in: with the battery full (100 %, held to 95 %), PV present and a setting on, the output never drops below the PV power plus 10 W. Detection's threshold stays half the configured power, so on a Venus D a charge probe fails once PV leaves less than that, and a probe during feed-in fails once PV plus 10 W exceeds it. BatterySimulator applies both rules to every command of a VNSD-0 with phase detection on; surplus_feed_in stands in for the unidentified setting. The protocol doc gets a Venus D subsection. Why
A battery with no stored phase reports phase
0and finds its phase on its own. It zeroes its output, takes a baseline, steps its output, and looks for the meter phase that moved by at least half the step. While it does this it is not steered. AstraMeter got in the way of that in three ways. Refs #732.0batteries were counted in the pool. A battery that stays at phase0took a share in the fair split and the balance correction, so the steered batteries covered only about 75 % of the load. With the reproduced setup the residual grid import went from 41/78/150 W down to about 5 W. Whether this changes anything for the Venus E Mini in [Feature / Bug]: Support for Marstek Venus E Mini & multi-battery balancing issues #732 is not established.D.What changed
docs/ct002-ct003-protocol.mdgets a new section, Battery-side phase detection, reverse engineered from the HMG-50 v156, VNSE3-0 v151, VNSD-0 v151, HME-3 and B2500 (HMJ-2 v110) firmware. It covers the phase byte, what starts a detection, the attempt sequence with its thresholds and timers, what a battery reports while detecting (this is backed by the device log in Venus 3.0: Seltsames Verhalten alle 35 minutes #652), how a reply is accepted, and what an emulator has to do.BatterySimulator(phase_detection=True)runs the HMG-50 or Venus detector exactly as the firmware does (src/astrameter/simulator/phase_detection.py), including reply acceptance, meter offline after failed polls, and steering on the total with "sum all phases". B2500 is documented but not modelled. A poll that gets no reply now counts as a failed poll on Python 3.10 too:asyncio.TimeoutErroronly became the built-inTimeoutErrorin 3.11.surplus_feed_instands in for the unidentified setting).tests/test_e2e_phase_detection.pyrun against both backends. They cover a battery on each phase, a battery next to a steering one, a meter outage during the probe, a meter that isn't ready at startup, a slow meter, a low-charge (charging) probe, CT003 per-phase and total-only, and a stuck battery that must not hold back a steered one. There are also unit tests for the pool and probe behaviour, the Venus D PV rules, and a shared parity test for the outage.Open points (not in this PR)
