CI: the test job fetches upstream, so tests that read its TestFiles run instead of skipping - #2774
CI's test job now fetches the upstream sources, so the tests that read upstream/TestFiles actually run. Before, they skipped silently in every PR and reported a pass. An agent working on the extension found two regressions that only showed once upstream/ was present locally; CI couldn't have seen them.
Units: CI (the test job); test skip guards only
In scope: .github/workflows/ci.yml; the skip sites of 12 crates/solidcore/tests files, 10 crates/difftest/tests files and 2 difftest src tests
Expected edits: those; no library code
Evidence: below
Status / blockers / next step: ready
What changes
The test job runs ./.github/actions/cpp-reference right after checkout, as difftest-sweep does. It clones upstream at the pinned commit (scripts/upstream-pin.env), enables sccache for every build in the job, and installs the C++ reference. The job's second call of the action, the workflow_dispatch difftest one, goes: calling the action twice would fail at git remote add origin, and the runner tests use the install from the first call.
No silent skips in CI. The job sets SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM=1. Each test that skipped when its upstream file was missing now fails, naming the path, when that variable is set. Locally, without upstream, it still skips as before.
cargo fmt --all --check and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings pass. actionlint reports only the unknown blacksmith-* runner labels.
Still not run in CI
issue_1937's two bottle tests are #[ignore]d "requires the pinned upstream bottle.smb fixture", and ub_285 is ignored as slow. With upstream now present, the bottle tests' reason for being ignored is gone. Turning them back on is a follow-up, since they may be slow.
Automated checks now verify that required upstream reference files are available. Missing files cause checks to fail when running with required references; outside that configuration, existing skip behavior remains.
CI now prepares upstream sources and the C++ reference before running workspace checks, helping ensure test inputs are available and flagging incomplete reference data.
The test job had no upstream/ checkout, so every test that reads
upstream/TestFiles skipped itself and passed. It now runs the
cpp-reference action first (upstream at the pinned commit, sccache for
every build in the job, the C++ reference the difftest runner tests
already used), and sets SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM=1.
With SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM set, each of those tests in solidcore
and difftest fails naming the missing path instead of skipping; unset
(a local run without upstream/), they skip as before.

The CI test job now provisions upstream sources and sets SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM. Tests in difftest and solidcore fail when upstream files are missing and the variable is set. Existing skip and return paths remain when it is unset.

Summary
CI upstream setup .github/workflows/ci.yml
The test job sets SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM and runs cpp-reference for upstream sources, sccache, and the C++ reference. The conditional setup step near the runner test was removed.
Upstream setup appears consistent with the required fixtures. Two tests may still pass despite incomplete or incorrect checks, so their coverage gaps warrant follow-up, but the available evidence does not establish a broader test-job failure.

Fail the test on an incorrect trim owner.
The newly enabled test only logs an owner mismatch, so CI still passes when a trim has the wrong caller key. Assert the expected owner and ensure the test checks at least one trim. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Replace the diagnostic-only owner mismatch handling in the trim check with an
assertion that each trim’s owner equals key_of(EntityRef::Edgeuse(u)). Also
assert that the test encounters at least one trim, so it cannot pass without

crates/difftest/tests/api_files_binary_text.rs:140-141 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Fail on unreadable census files.
When one file cannot be read, this test skips it even if SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM is set. If another file is readable, checked > 0 allows the incomplete census to pass. Directory-read errors are also skipped in files(). Report these errors with their paths when upstream is required. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update `files()` and the census test’s file-read handling so errors include the
affected path and underlying reason when `SOLIDCORE_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM` is set,
rather than silently skipping unreadable files or directory-read failures.
Preserve the existing skip behavior when upstream is not required.
