fix(startup): make STOP/START safe and add per-protocol startup controls - #6559
PROXYSQL STOP can deadlock while teardown waits for the issuing Admin client, and stopped-state runtime reads can dereference absent processors. This PR fixes those lifecycle failures and adds independent MySQL/PostgreSQL startup controls on current v3.0.
Lifecycle: drain the STOP acknowledgement before initiating shutdown, with a one-second bound for stalled peers; retain existing client draining and normal statistics refresh. Guard absent-processor snapshots, preserve stopped-state LOAD SERVERS and Prometheus output, and report explicit unavailable-runtime errors for SAVE QUERY RULES/FIREWALL. Fix PostgreSQL TLS retry accounting so accepted plaintext is not sent twice.
Startup: add mysql-workers, pgsql-workers, mysql-admin, pgsql-admin, mysql-monitor, and pgsql-monitor as CLI/top-level configuration permissions, defaulting to true. Validate every explicit value, support separate/equal forms and true/false/1/0, apply CLI precedence, and retain permissions through STOP/START. Disabled workers have zero active Worker status and no worker/idle threads or listeners; configured positive thread counts survive runtime/disk SAVE and enabled relaunch.
Shared authentication, hostgroup managers and monitor data objects remain available. Core LOAD MYSQL/PGSQL SERVERS stays successful. Monitor permission remains distinct from persisted monitor_enabled. New data fields are appended to preserve existing member offsets used by plugin readers.
STOP acknowledges the request asynchronously; existing Admin clients disconnect during reload and must reconnect before configuration or START.
This combines the lifecycle work previously reviewed in #6558 with the startup refresh in this PR, using one CI matrix against v3.0. Fresh implementation of the remaining ideas in #5217 and #4960, with context from #5222 and issues #5186, #4951 and #5218. Prior implementation/report/review by JavierJF and Rene Cannao are retained as references. The original PRs remain open.
Validation:
DEBUG Stable and v3.1 AddressSanitizer builds; seven lifecycle and twelve startup process tests pass, including all 16 worker/Admin combinations, all four monitor combinations, STOP/START, graceful shutdown, CLI validation/precedence, and saved nondefault worker counts through physical relaunch.
Twenty real-stream drain checks pass on both builds: oversized packet staging, full sockets, partial writes, stalled readers, real TLS 1.3 and exact decrypted output. Layout regression passes.
Latest standalone-runner changes were rechecked on Stable: prerequisite/non-Linux skips, Linux/Darwin/FreeBSD dependency probes, and genuine probe failures remaining failures. Coverage CI installs the tools and executes the probes.
All eight changed production translation units, relevant unit-test sources and a layout probe pass v4.0 compilation checks. Installed-plugin and full backend integration are covered by remote CI rather than claimed as local runs.
Final head 907e218b1: repository CI lint, all 65 product test checks, the selected-tier gate (66/66 including the build), ThreadSanitizer, Sonar and both Codecov checks pass. The v4.0 AddressSanitizer unit job reports 234 PASS / 0 FAIL, including the lifecycle/startup probes and response-drain/layout regressions.
CI follow-up: the startup probe tolerates a transient task exiting during /proc enumeration while retaining its worker assertions. A controlled real task exit reproduced the original failure and passed after the fix; all twelve startup cases also pass locally. Confirmed backend setup timeouts were retried at failed-job scope.
Sonar's quality gate passes with four nonblocking code-smell findings: parser complexity/nesting and two deliberate offsetof checks in the ABI layout regression.
Probes: python3 test/infra/control/test_module_lifecycle.py src/proxysql and python3 test/infra/control/test_module_startup.py src/proxysql. Linux, Python 3 and mysql/psql clients are required; each test owns its private daemon, datadir and ports. Sanitizer execution uses ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=0:abort_on_error=1:halt_on_error=1.
Operator details: doc/features/module-startup-controls.md. Plan and verification record: docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-28-module-lifecycle-refresh.md.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added startup controls for MySQL and PostgreSQL workers, Admin listeners, and monitor threads. All are enabled by default; settings can be supplied in configuration or on the command line and take effect after relaunch.
Configured worker-thread counts remain available even when worker startup is disabled.
Bug Fixes
Improved Admin shutdown response handling and behavior when modules are stopped or unavailable, including clearer errors when saving runtime state.
Improved reliability of encrypted PostgreSQL responses and availability of metrics when components are not running.
Documentation
Documented startup settings, precedence, and runtime behavior.
Acknowledge STOP before teardown drains the issuing Admin client, and always release its SQL lock before leaving the handler. Guard processor-dependent snapshots in no-start mode without suppressing runtime statistics refresh. Construct monitor data objects before Admin accepts LOAD SERVERS, retaining successful loads while stopped.
Reimplements the remaining lifecycle work from #5217 and #5222 on current v3.0; based on the original #5186 report and prior work by JavierJF and Rene Cannao. STOP acknowledges the request and clients reconnect after the Admin reload.
Run bounded private daemons and exercise both Admin wire protocols, initial no-start mode, repeated cycles, concurrent readers, LOAD SERVERS, all runtime/statistics tables, and Prometheus export. Verify normal runtime snapshots refresh after START.
Allow startup-only worker, Admin, and monitor permissions for MySQL and PostgreSQL, with all components enabled by default. Read config booleans before CLI overrides, accept both option value and option=value forms, and reject invalid booleans.
Disabled workers have zero effective threads, create no worker/idle threads or listeners, and are omitted from listener conflict validation. Preserve shared Auth/HGM services and runtime monitor_enabled settings. Core LOAD SERVERS behavior is unchanged.
Reimplements the idea from #4960, originally implemented and reviewed by JavierJF and Rene Cannao. Builds on the current #5186 lifecycle refresh rather than rebasing the old PR.
Cover all 16 worker/Admin combinations with idle threads and graceful shutdown, all four monitor permissions, configuration and CLI precedence, separate/equal and numeric argument forms, invalid values, effective thread counts, and disabled listener/thread absence.
Validate every explicit component option, reject missing or invalid later values, and apply the last valid value. The parser previously returned only the first occurrence, silently ignoring overrides.
Append startup permission fields to ProxySQL_GlobalVariables instead of changing the existing global struct prefix. The compatibility probe demonstrated start_mutex shifting from offset 16 to 24 before this correction. Original public field offsets remain intact.
Add RED/GREEN tests for repeated component switches and preserve the global prefix with a registered unit test. Extend process coverage through initial no-start with mixed permissions and all monitor permission combinations across STOP/START; keep runtime monitor settings distinct from startup permission.

The change adds six startup permissions for MySQL and PostgreSQL workers, Admin listeners, and monitor threads. It also updates STOP response handling and Admin operations when runtime processors are unavailable. Regression tests and documentation cover startup configuration and lifecycle behavior.
Adds six default-enabled startup permissions. Configuration and CLI values are validated, with CLI values taking precedence. Disabled worker handlers retain configured thread counts while reporting zero active workers. Listener setup respects the corresponding permissions.
Admin shutdown and stopped-state handling include/AdminResponseDrain.h, lib/Admin_Handler.cpp, lib/PgSQL_Data_Stream.cpp, lib/ProxySQL_Admin_Stats.cpp
STOP acknowledges the request and drains its response for up to one second before signaling shutdown. Admin operations and metrics handle unavailable runtime components. Nonfatal TLS write errors no longer discard already-consumed plaintext.
Regression probes and verification records test/infra/control/*, test/tap/tests/unit/*, test/tap/test_helpers/*, test/tap/groups/groups.json, test/tap/tests/unit/Makefile, docs/superpowers/*
Adds startup, lifecycle, layout, and response-drain tests. Registers the tests and updates runner prerequisites. Documentation and plan records describe controls, coverage, and verification.

The concern is not decided by the inspected evidence. The runtime flush does write 0 for threads while workers are disabled. The disk-save caller and the later-start loader behavior were not located or read, so the persistence and rejection premises remain open. The cluster-sync premise was not inspected at all.

self.daemon() waits only for Admin readiness. The two runtime-setting queries do not wait for phase 3. The negative assertions can therefore run before either monitor reaches its startup path.
Wait for the "For online documentation" marker before checking that both monitor initialization messages are absent. This is a test-coverage refactor, not a current production defect.
The later monitor-permission test waits for this marker, but it uses the default monitor_enabled=false. It does not detect this runtime-true coverage gap.

Do not consume unittest arguments as the binary path.
test_module_startup.py imports this helper. A command such as python3 -m unittest discover -s test/infra/control -p test_module_startup.py makes discover the binary path, so daemon launches fail. Parse the optional binary argument without consuming unittest arguments. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @test/infra/control/test_module_lifecycle.py at line 24:
Update the BINARY initialization so it reads an optional binary-path argument
without popping or misinterpreting unittest arguments; when no binary path is
supplied, preserve the helper’s expected default behavior for callers such as
test_module_startup.py.
Daemon.ready() returns when SELECT 1 succeeds. The main thread runs ProxySQL_Main_init_phase3___start_all() after that readiness point, and the documentation banner is emitted only after phase 3 returns. The current assertions can therefore run before monitor initialization. A later erroneous monitor startup can escape detection.
Wait for the documentation banner before reading the monitor log. This is the required synchronization correction for this coverage gap.
Suggested fix

f"WHERE variable_name='{dialect}-monitor_enabled'").stdout.strip(), "true")

Skip private daemon tests during unittest discovery on unsupported hosts.
The documented macOS discovery command collects both Lifecycle and ModuleStartup. Their base class has no skip guard, and run_probe_tests() runs only under __main__. On a documented macOS setup without mysql or psql, Daemon.ready() can call subprocess.run() for a missing client and raise FileNotFoundError.

Add a class-level skip guard to IsolatedDaemonTest so unittest discovery skips
its subclasses unless the host is Linux and both mysql and psql are available;
preserve the existing daemon setup for supported hosts.

PROXYSQL STOPcan deadlock while teardown waits for the issuing Admin client, and stopped-state runtime reads can dereference absent processors. This PR fixes those lifecycle failures and adds independent MySQL/PostgreSQL startup controls on currentv3.0.mysql-workers,pgsql-workers,mysql-admin,pgsql-admin,mysql-monitor, andpgsql-monitoras CLI/top-level configuration permissions, defaulting to true. Validate every explicit value, support separate/equal forms and true/false/1/0, apply CLI precedence, and retain permissions through STOP/START. Disabled workers have zero active Worker status and no worker/idle threads or listeners; configured positive thread counts survive runtime/disk SAVE and enabled relaunch.Shared authentication, hostgroup managers and monitor data objects remain available. Core LOAD MYSQL/PGSQL SERVERS stays successful. Monitor permission remains distinct from persisted
monitor_enabled. New data fields are appended to preserve existing member offsets used by plugin readers.STOP acknowledges the request asynchronously; existing Admin clients disconnect during reload and must reconnect before configuration or START.
This combines the lifecycle work previously reviewed in #6558 with the startup refresh in this PR, using one CI matrix against
v3.0. Fresh implementation of the remaining ideas in #5217 and #4960, with context from #5222 and issues #5186, #4951 and #5218. Prior implementation/report/review by JavierJF and Rene Cannao are retained as references. The original PRs remain open.Validation:
907e218b1: repository CI lint, all 65 product test checks, the selected-tier gate (66/66 including the build), ThreadSanitizer, Sonar and both Codecov checks pass. The v4.0 AddressSanitizer unit job reports 234 PASS / 0 FAIL, including the lifecycle/startup probes and response-drain/layout regressions./procenumeration while retaining its worker assertions. A controlled real task exit reproduced the original failure and passed after the fix; all twelve startup cases also pass locally. Confirmed backend setup timeouts were retried at failed-job scope.offsetofchecks in the ABI layout regression.Probes:
