Tempest is a command-line tool that handles Wine/Proton configuration, authentication, URI scheme registration, and game launching for Vortex.

tempest setupsetup installs Wine, creates a dedicated Wine prefix, downloads Vortex, and registers the vortex:// URI scheme. When the GE-Proton backend is enabled it skips the separate DXVK/vkd3d-proton install steps (both are bundled in GE-Proton).
Tempest can launch Vortex through GE-Proton (bundled Wine + DXVK + vkd3d-proton) using umu-launcher instead of a bare system Wine. Install umu-launcher, then:

After setup, clicking Play on the Vortex website triggers tempest uri-handler automatically via the registered vortex:// scheme.
~/.config/tempest/config.toml is created on first run. Notable options:

(device filtering for DXVK plus NVIDIA PRIME / GL offloading env). Set it to
"nvidia" to force it, or "intel" to pin the integrated GPU.
wayland_mode has Tempest detect the current session: under Wayland it enables
the wine-wayland driver (PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND), otherwise it stays on
X11/XWayland. keep_panel = true disables Wine's fullscreen hack so the
desktop environment's own panel/topbar stays visible in fullscreen games.
Shader-cache collection (shader_cache = true) persists DXVK state caches and
NVIDIA/Mesa GL shader caches under ~/.cache/vortex-shaders/, which removes
most of the first-launch and fullscreen shader-compilation hitches.
Create a launcher entry in your application menu (name "Vortex", with its icon):
