Worker becomes a zombie if stack/heap overflows occur while executing an algorithm

The worker should at least stop itself when such an error occurs, but it does not seem to work. The appropriate exceptions are (alL?) caught in the run()-method and then the worker is shut down with System.exit(..), but it has never worked for unknown reasons.
