Summary

Adds a per-run NVML sampler for one Agoge agoge_run_id. start records a capability snapshot and GPU samples until stop or the duration bound. The trainer stays a separate command. This is not a resident monitor.

Refs #53
Linear: RM-1230

What landed

  • tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py: start, stop, and run -- <command>.
  • run leaves the trainer in the sampler's process group. It ignores SIGINT while it waits, so a terminal Ctrl+C reaches the trainer once, and it forwards only SIGTERM to that child. Before exec, the child restores SIGPIPE, SIGTTIN, SIGTTOU, SIGXFSZ, SIGINT, and SIGTERM to SIG_DFL. Job control stays with the shell: waitpid does not use WUNTRACED, and a Ctrl+Z stop is not killed. run waits until the trainer exits, then writes clock-skew.json and overhead.json and returns the child's exit code (128+signal when the child is killed).
  • Samples are bkl.f0_correlation.v1, stamped with the NVML capability_digest. Missing readings stay null.
  • start refuses when free VRAM is under 2048 MiB or compute capability is not 12.0.
  • Contract: docs/f0-gpu-sampler.md. MiniCPM5 recipe: recipes/f0-gpu-sampler.md.
  • WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04 setup for the same GPU runner labels (self-hosted, Linux, X64, CUDA): scripts/setup-wsl-gpu-runner.sh and recipes/wsl-gpu-runner.md. The script does not install a Linux NVIDIA driver. Workflow labels and tools/gpu_ci_gate.py are unchanged. The new script is an unknown path, so this PR still requires the self-hosted GPU job.

Tests

python3 tools/check_f0_gpu_sampler.py — 24 passed, including a pty stdin read, SIGINT exit 130, SIGTERM exit 143, a child exit of 9, a quiet SIGPIPE from yes into head -n 1 (141), and a pty Ctrl+Z then fg on run -- sleep 2 && echo SURVIVED.

Still open on ShipOfTheseus

Live GPU acceptance is not done here. A person still needs to run recipes/f0-gpu-sampler.md on ShipOfTheseus. This PR does not claim that run. GPU jobs still need nvcc, a GCC 6–15 host compiler, and, for the sanitizer workflow, compute-sanitizer inside the distro.

Summary by cubic

Adds a bounded per-run NVML sampler that records device state for one Agoge agoge_run_id as bkl.f0_correlation.v1 JSONL. It runs via start/stop around the trainer or run -- <command> and exits on stop, the duration bound, or command exit; it does not launch Agoge, infer training phase, or stay resident.

Sampler behavior

  • Missing readings stay null (unavailable, unsupported, permission_denied, transient_failure, device_lost); the denied, transient, and lost statuses count as invalid in efficiency blocks.
  • start refuses below 2048 MiB free VRAM or compute capability below 12.0; --allow-low-headroom records the breach instead.
  • run puts the child in its own process group, ignores SIGINT while waiting, and forwards only SIGTERM; with terminal stdin it grants the child the foreground group and returns the child's exit code. A stopped trainer stays stopped until the shell continues it.
  • The sampler child and bracketed command spawn via fork plus a literal python3 execvp with detached stdio.
  • Session state is written atomically; a reading straddling a stop request is dropped; a SIGTERM landing before the child pid is recorded stays pending; the bracket's sampler thread is a daemon; nvml_live clears its cached VRAM per sample.

Setup and validation

  • scripts/setup-wsl-gpu-runner.sh and recipes/wsl-gpu-runner.md register the self-hosted runner in WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04 under the existing labels; both refuse Linux NVIDIA driver packages. A failed dependency install is retried, and a replace aborts unless svc.sh stop and uninstall both succeed.
  • CPU CI runs tools/check_f0_gpu_sampler.py against NVML fakes — 26 scenarios including atomic session write, stop during a read, single-delivery forwarded SIGINT/SIGTERM, and pty Ctrl+Z then fg.
  • A live idle-GPU smoke on ShipOfTheseus is recorded in docs/f0-gpu-sampler.md: median read 3.0 ms, overhead_ratio 0.003, median jitter 4.7 µs; temperature_memory stays null as unsupported.
  • tools/host_cli.py stays off the CPU allowlist so gate-helper edits still require GPU validation.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Add bounded GPU sampling for Agoge training runs

What Changed

  • Collects NVML GPU readings for one training run, with start/stop commands or by wrapping a command; sampling ends when stopped or when its duration limit is reached.
  • Refuses to start by default when the GPU is not compute capability 12.0 or has less than 2048 MiB free, and records missing readings as null rather than zero.
  • Writes samples, timing and overhead summaries, and clock-skew data; wrapped commands retain their exit status and receive forwarded termination signals.
  • Adds setup instructions for registering a GPU runner in WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04 without installing a Linux NVIDIA driver.
  • Efficiency summaries now exclude permission-denied, transient-failure, and device-lost readings from averages and peaks.

Impact

✅ GPU samples tied to the matching training run
✅ Fewer fabricated zero readings
✅ GPU captures blocked below 2048 MiB free by default

Possibly related issues

  • RM-760: The pull request adds per-run GPU sampling and capability records, but does not execute RM-760 or add wall-clock and throughput reporting.
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 743ca

The WSL runner setup script can leave a runner without its required dependencies after a failed first run, because reruns skip the install. A failed service stop during replacement can also leave the old service running with its registration files deleted. Fix both before relying on the script. The sampler changes themselves look sound.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 743ca

The existing restrictions on self-hosted GPU jobs remain intact. However, rerunning the new setup script can execute runner-writable service code as root, and replacement can discard registration metadata before confirming service cleanup. These risks are localized to the runner and require operator action.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The new setup flow executes svc.sh from the runner-writable installation directory through sudo, including on ordinary reruns that reuse existing files. Code executing as the runner user could modify that script while preserving the version stamp, then obtain root execution when an operator reruns setup and authorizes sudo. Fresh-download verification and the fresh-only dependency-install guard do not protect these service calls. Fork exclusion limits initial exposure but does not protect against compromised same-repository job code.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: RUNNER_REPLACE ignores stop and uninstall failures, then deletes local registration, credential, and service metadata before configuring the replacement. Cleanup failure or subsequent configuration failure can therefore leave local ownership records inconsistent with an existing service. The script attempts cleanup and requests server-side replacement, but does not verify that the previous service is stopped before discarding its metadata; actual residual execution depends on the external service implementation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The privileged rerun path can expand a runner-user compromise to root within the WSL distro, affecting its runner credentials, service configuration and accessible data. It requires later operator-authorized setup; the evidence does not establish Windows administrator access or cross-tenant compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A compromised job running as the runner user can modify svc.sh in the reused installation. A later setup rerun accepts the existing version marker and invokes that script through sudo. This is a newly added executable path, not evidence that the unchanged workflow newly admits fork code.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The GPU job retains its required/trusted checks, independent same-repository condition, fixed runner labels, and disabled checkout credential persistence. The helper change adds CPU-only sampler paths, while policy files still require GPU validation and unknown paths still fail closed to requiring it.
  • observed — Setup rejects runner locations inside the canonicalized checkout and normally refuses direct root invocation. These controls and fresh-archive verification do not make an already-used runner directory immutable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Ignoring service teardown failures before deleting registration metadata weakens replacement failure containment and recovery. Subsequent server-side replacement is counterevidence against permanent duplicate registration, but cannot establish that local cleanup succeeded when configuration fails.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate privileged service management from runner-writable scripts, using root-owned control code and protected service configuration. Do not rely on the reusable extraction marker as an integrity control for privileged callees.
  • proposed — Make replacement fail closed on unsuccessful service teardown, preserve recovery metadata until termination is confirmed, and make retryable installation completion distinct from successful archive extraction.

Review Summary

This PR adds a well-structured, bounded per-run NVML GPU sampler with solid test coverage (18 CPU-CI scenarios covering all major failure modes). The overall design — capability snapshot on start, JSONL sample stream, explicit stop/finalize, STOP-file and signal-based termination — is sound.

Two defects were identified that block merge:

🛑 Critical Bugs

  1. process_state — guard-after-use bug (tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py, lines 665–669): text[end + 2:].split() executes before if end < 0 is checked. When rfind(")") returns -1 (malformed /proc/pid/stat), the slice silently returns the wrong fields, making pid_alive unreliable and potentially leaving zombie sampler processes undetected by stop. Fix: move the end < 0 guard before the slice.

  2. free_mib — KeyError crash (tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py, line 282): The fallback str(metrics["headroom"]["status"]) raises KeyError if neither "headroom" nor "vram_free" is present in the metrics dict (possible with non-standard backends or future metric set changes). This crashes refusal_reason before any refusal can be recorded. Fix: use .get() with a safe default.

Notes on Non-Issues Reviewed

  • The run_bracket early-return path (armed.refused → return armed.code) correctly flows through the finally block, calling close_backend and skipping finalize via the status == "refused" guard. No resource leak.
  • overhead_within_budget's mixed integer floor-division and float comparison is correct as implemented.
  • The _ints helper correctly excludes float values from timing metrics (all timing values are int by construction).
  • gpu_ci_gate.py CPU_FILES expansion correctly classifies all new sampler files as CPU-only paths.

Split sampler support out of the 759-line module, keep run_bracket under
50 lines, and bundle sample timing so build_gpu_sample stays within the
parameter limit. Spawn the sampler child and the bracketed command with
posix_spawnp instead of a dynamic subprocess argv.

Codacy flags posix_spawnp when the executable is dynamic. Use os.spawnvp
with mode plus the literal program name, which the spawn audit allows.

Codacy's start-process rule flags every os.spawn* call. Fork, then
execvp a literal python3 so the audit's static-executable exception
applies.

Co-authored-by: Raul Cardenas Montoya <[email protected]>
Close the child's standard streams after fork so start does not hold a
pipe open for the whole run. Leave tools/host_cli.py off the CPU
allowlist so edits to the gate helper still require GPU validation.

Co-authored-by: Raul Cardenas Montoya <[email protected]>
The bracket installs handlers that signal the trainer, waits until that
child exits, and returns its status (128+signal when killed). The sampler
then stops and writes the clock-skew and overhead records. CPU tests cover
SIGINT, SIGTERM, and a nonzero child exit.

Co-authored-by: Raul Cardenas Montoya <[email protected]>
Comment thread tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py Outdated
A terminal SIGINT hits the sampler's group and was also forwarded, so
the child saw the signal twice. The child now leaves that group, and
the tests require a single delivery plus a different process group.

Comment thread tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py Outdated
os.kill only reached the direct child, so a shell or uv wrapper could
exit while the real trainer kept running. killpg targets the group
created for that child.

Comment thread tools/f0_gpu_sampler.py Outdated
When stdin is a terminal, run makes the child's process group the
foreground group with tcsetpgrp and restores it after the child exits.
A background read no longer stops on SIGTTIN until the duration bound.
A pty test checks that a child readline returns, and the 130/143/9
cases still pass.

run ignores SIGINT while it waits and forwards only SIGTERM. The child
resets SIGPIPE, SIGTTIN, SIGTTOU, SIGXFSZ, SIGINT, and SIGTERM to
SIG_DFL before exec. waitpid uses WUNTRACED and kills a stopped child
so the sampler can still write its final records.

Register the existing self-hosted, Linux, X64, and CUDA labels inside
WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04. The script checks the WSL nvidia-smi and compute
capability 12.0, and it does not install a Linux NVIDIA driver. The
GPU gate and workflow labels stay as they are.

CodeAnt PR Risk: Low Risk

  • The PR appears safe to merge; the reported path-containment and sampler lifecycle races are addressed in the current code.
  • Atomic session writes and SIGTERM masking also prevent partial reads and lost termination, with CPU tests covering these paths.

7. New release milestones include the version in the title; close only when that tag and release artifacts exist. The 2026-09-22 retirement of historical M1/M2/K0/CI/K1 tracks creates no retrospective releases. See [docs/RELEASE_V0_2_0.md](docs/RELEASE_V0_2_0.md).

## Release acceptance

4. Target sm_120; no sm_100, FA4, TMEM, or MIG assumptions. Maintain **at least
2048 MiB free throughout** each measurement, not only before allocation.
Serialize training and GPU CI. Missing reserve or competing workloads
invalidate the measurement. The headroom probe is not an exclusive lock.

wait_child no longer uses WUNTRACED or SIGKILL. A stopped trainer stays
stopped until the shell continues it, and run waits for the real exit.
The pty test sends Ctrl+Z and fg to sleep 2 && echo SURVIVED.

- write_json writes a temp file and renames it, so the detached loop
never reads a half-written session.json while start records its pid.
- run_trainer blocks SIGTERM across fork(); a SIGTERM that lands before
the child pid is known stays pending and is forwarded once recorded.
- sample_loop drops a reading that straddles a stop request, so no
sample is appended after finalize owns samples.jsonl.
- The bracket's sampler thread is a daemon; if a blocked NVML read
outlives the join timeout, run finalizes without closing the backend
under the reader and still exits when the trainer does.
- _exec_job_shell exits 127 on any OSError instead of continuing the
  checker in the forked child.
- setup-wsl-gpu-runner.sh canonicalizes RUNNER_ROOT before the
in-checkout guard, runs installdependencies.sh as root only right
after a checksum-verified extraction, and drops the local
  registration before RUNNER_REPLACE=1 re-runs config.sh --replace.
- Two new CPU checks: stop during a read drops the sample, and the
atomic session write leaves no temp files (26 passed).

74924c1 described two changes that did not apply: write_json still
truncated session.json in place, and bash_stop_and_fg still used
semicolon-joined statements. This commit lands them.

- write_json writes a sibling temp file and os.replace()s it.
atomic_session_write now holds a reader open across the rewrite and
fails against the old in-place write.
- bash_stop_and_fg takes an optional ready file; check_ctrl_z_fg starts
the trainer as `sh -c "touch <ready>; exec sleep 2"` and sends Ctrl+Z
only after the trainer is running, so the stop lands in wait_child.

Correction on my thread replies: the atomic write_json and the semicolon split were described in 74924c1 but did not apply there. They landed in 997e63f, and atomic_session_write now fails against the old in-place write. CPU checks in WSL Ubuntu 24.04: check_f0_gpu_sampler.py 26 passed, and the other 8 ci-cpu F0/gate checks pass.

…(RM-1230)

Codacy flagged f0_sampler_support.py and check_f0_gpu_sampler.py over
the 500-line limit after 74924c1/997e63f. The pty, pipe, and job-shell
drivers plus the CachingFree/StopsMidRead NVML wrappers move to
tools/f0_sampler_harness.py. The sampler never imports it, and it is
on the gate's CPU allowlist alongside the other F0 tools.

docs/f0-gpu-sampler.md records a live NVML smoke on ShipOfTheseus
(WSL2, idle GPU): median read 3.0 ms, overhead_ratio 0.003, median
jitter 4.7 us; temperature_memory stays null as unsupported. This is
not the training-load overhead number.

197-211: Parent-side cleanup in bash_stop_and_fg is still missing.

If os.write or _drain_pty raises, the function skips os.kill, os.waitpid, and os.close(master). A raising os.read on the pty master (EIO) is a realistic trigger. The Bash child stays unreaped and the master descriptor stays open for the rest of the checker run. Wrap the interaction in try/finally, as the earlier review comment on this function proposed.

Comment thread scripts/setup-wsl-gpu-runner.sh Outdated
A missing .bkl-runner-deps stamp makes the next run verify and extract
the archive again before installdependencies.sh runs as root. Replacement
deletes local registration files only after svc.sh stop and uninstall
both succeed.
