Run on hardware now PINGs for psxmon first and falls back to Unirom. Through psxmon the build goes up in 8 KiB LOAD frames and starts with RUN; psxsplash's file calls then arrive as
break 0, 0x10xstops, answered with GET_REGS, READ_MEM, WRITE_MEM, SET_REG and CONT (nugget monitor/PROTOCOL.md section 8). That needs psxsplash#72: under psxmon the SIO1 file protocol loses replies. An older psxsplash gets a line in the output saying so.editor_tests has a fake monitor; frames are checked byte for byte against a separate host implementation. In pcsx-redux with the monitor cart, courtyard loads through it. No real console yet.
