feat: remove deprecated api (major version bump) - #1122
Conversation
parse() returned a profile without checking the signature, expiry, audience or anything else, so its output could be forged. It has been deprecated in favour of validate() and Polis does not use it. The tests that went through parse() now go through validate() on signed documents (status code, non-XML input, DTD, missing assertion, missing Version, attribute mapping, createSAMLResponse round trips), or are dropped where they only covered the unverified path. The createSAMLResponse round trips sign with the test IdP key, since the Okta test certificate does not verify. BREAKING CHANGE: parse() is no longer exported from the package root or from dist/response. Use validate(), and parseIssuer() to read the Issuer before validating. …root Both are internal helpers for validate() and sign(), and Polis does not use them. They stay exported from dist/decrypt and dist/cert, which the rest of the library imports. BREAKING CHANGE: decryptXml and PubKeyInfo are no longer on the default export or the named exports of the package root. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
validateSignature() does the same check and also rejects being given both a certificate and a thumbprint. The verification itself stays, as a module-private function that validateSignature() calls after sanitizeXML(), exactly as before. BREAKING CHANGE: dist/validateSignature no longer exports hasValidSignature. Use validateSignature(). The previous commit left the validateSignature export list short enough to fit on one line. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
It is an internal helper of parseFromString and was deprecated. Callers that need to recognise a multi-rooted document can compare against the multiRootedXMLError error, which is still exported. BREAKING CHANGE: dist/utils no longer exports isMultiRootedXMLError. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
The export list now describes 2.0.0 rather than 1.21.0, and a new block pins what 2.0.0 removed on purpose (parse, decryptXml and PubKeyInfo from the root, parse from dist/response, isMultiRootedXMLError from dist/utils, hasValidSignature from dist/validateSignature), so none of them comes back by accident. Run against the 1.22.0 lib/, that block fails all 4 cases. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
Without strictAudienceValidation, validateAudience accepted any Audience that merely started with the expected value, so an assertion issued for https://sp.example.com/metadata.evil.example passed for https://sp.example.com/metadata. Audiences are now always compared exactly, and the option that opted into that is gone. A list of expected audiences still works: each AudienceRestriction must name one of them exactly. The suffix tests now assert rejection, and new signed-response tests cover the prefix cases through validate(); two of them fail on the previous code. index.spec.ts pins the removed option with @ts-expect-error. BREAKING CHANGE: ValidateOptions.strictAudienceValidation is removed and saml20.validateAudience() no longer takes a third argument. An Audience must equal the expected audience, or one of the expected audiences, exactly. If you relied on a prefix match, pass every accepted audience in `audience`. package.json gets an exports map with "." (types first, then the CJS build) and "./package.json". Paths inside the package, such as @boxyhq/saml20/dist/typings, now fail to resolve with ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED in Node, and with TS2307 under moduleResolution node16, nodenext or bundler. TypeScript's node10 resolution ignores the map. Every module under dist/ used to be public, so compat.spec.ts pinned the exports of 13 modules. It now pins the package root only: the named exports and the default export must each be exactly the API list, so an addition or removal shows up as a test change. It also checks the exports map and, through a self-reference, that an internal module cannot be resolved. Both of those fail without the map. Checked against an npm pack of this commit: require() and ESM import of the root work, require of dist/typings throws ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED, and root type imports compile under node10, node16 and bundler resolution. BREAKING CHANGE: only the package root and package.json can be imported. Import types such as SAMLProfile from '@boxyhq/saml20' instead of '@boxyhq/saml20/dist/typings'. It existed only for callers importing dist/validateSignature, which the exports map now blocks. The package root takes certToPEM from cert directly, so the public API is unchanged. Leaving `audience` out skipped the audience check, so a signed assertion the IdP issued for any other service provider was accepted. validate() now rejects with "audience is required." when audience is missing, an empty string, an empty list, or a list with a non-string or empty entry, before any signature work. The audience check then always runs. New tests cover each missing shape (all 5 fail on the previous code), and index.spec.ts pins the required property with @ts-expect-error. The existing validate() calls now pass the audience their fixture was issued for (encrypted Okta and OneLogin fixtures: https://saml.boxyhq.com), and the unhandled-rejection sweep gives every case an audience so each one still fails for its own reason, plus a case without one. BREAKING CHANGE: ValidateOptions.audience is required. Pass the SP entity ID, or a list of accepted ones. validateSignature() had two failure modes: it threw for a document it could not check (a disallowed algorithm, too many References, no Signature, untrusted rotation certificates) and returned null for a signature that did not verify. A caller that only handled one of them could treat a bad signature as good. It now returns the signed XML or throws, with "invalid signature: the signature does not verify" for the null case. validate() keeps the old two-way contract through the module-private verifySignature(): it retries on the original document (for IdPs that sign after encrypting) only when the signature does not verify, so its behaviour and error messages are unchanged. BREAKING CHANGE: validateSignature() no longer returns null. Wrap it in try/catch instead of checking the return value. …onseAndVersion parseResponseAndVersion only ever receives what the signature covers, and validateSignature returns the signed Reference: a Response or an Assertion, never a WS-Trust RequestSecurityTokenResponse. The branch could not be reached, which branch coverage showed (response.ts goes from 92.94% to 95.12% branches with no test change). No behaviour changes: a signed Assertion inside an RSTR still validates exactly as before, through the Assertion branch. Removing parse() left three paths in response.ts without a test. They looked unreachable through validate(), but each one is reachable: - A signed Response that carries several Assertions is accepted, and the first one is used. - xml2js rejects some documents the DOM parser accepts, such as a bare "&" in text. validate() reports that as a WrapError with the xml2js error in inner. - sanitizeXML strips
after the DOM parser's DTD check, so "<!DOC
TYPE" inside a comment or CDATA becomes a DTD keyword that only the xml2js guard sees. validate() rejects it with doctypeNotAllowedError in inner. Each now has a validate() test, and response.ts is back to full line coverage. - test/assets/saml20.validAssertion.xml has had no reader since parse()
went; its persistent-NameID case is covered by a signed validate()
test.
- test/assets/certificates/oktaPublicKey.crt cannot be parsed: its
notAfter is a UTCTime too short for OpenSSL ("utctime is too short"),
so crypto.X509Certificate rejects it and nothing can verify against
it. sign.spec.ts and the createSAMLResponse tests in response.spec.ts
now sign with the testIdp key pair, and the "unrelated certificate"
in validateSignature.spec.ts is the OneLogin certificate.
oktaPrivateKey.pem stays: it decrypts oktaEncResponse.xml.
- The commented-out OneLogin and Okta certificate reads in
decrypt.response.spec.ts are gone.
Every file under test/assets is now read by a test.

- The build badge points at ory/saml20 instead of boxyhq/saml20. - The title says SAML 2.0 only: getVersion accepts Version="2.0" and nothing else, so "& 1.1" was wrong. - The intro says what the library does, that it started as a fork of leandrob/saml20, and that Ory maintains it under the existing npm name. - The note about callbacks before 1.6.0 is gone. - The BoxyHQ Discord and Twitter links are replaced by a pointer to GitHub issues. - My contributor email is my Ory address. The npm name @boxyhq/saml20, the matching setup-node scope in CI, and the BoxyHQ copyright line in LICENSE stay as they are. This reverts the code change of fb54843 ("refactor: drop the RequestSecurityTokenResponse branch from parseResponseAndVersion"). That commit called the branch unreachable and said nothing changed; both were wrong. When a WS-Federation provider such as ADFS signs the whole RequestSecurityTokenResponse, the signed content validate() reads is that envelope, and this branch is how it finds the Assertion inside. Without it, such a response failed with "Invalid assertion.". The branch had no test, which is why coverage made it look dead. New tests pin both ADFS shapes: a signed Assertion inside an unsigned RequestSecurityTokenResponse (handled by the Assertion branch), and an Assertion inside a signed one (this branch), plus a tampered signed envelope and an audience mismatch inside it. Without the branch, the signed-envelope acceptance and audience tests fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
…ignedInfo Polis tested this through its own code by spying on the xml-crypto copy inside @boxyhq/saml20 (test/saml/lib.test.ts and test/sso/logout.test.ts in ory-corp/cloud). That reaches into this library's dependencies and breaks whenever they move, so the guarantee belongs here. validateSignature.spec.ts already pins it for validateSignature(); this pins it for validate(), with a control showing the spy sees the single Reference of the unmodified response. Without the Reference ceiling the 1500-Reference case runs for minutes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LkWpdoa6VXK2GbJojJszvV
