What does this do?

Makes api-triggered runs (morph execute / morph-cli) honor the scraper's own platform file, instead of always silently building against DEFAULT_PLATFORM (cedar-14).

Why was this needed?

ApiController#run_remote untars uploaded code straight into run.repo_path and creates a Run with no scraper association at all - there's no git repo involved. Platform selection was run.scraper&.platform, which is always nil for these runs, so every morph execute run silently fell through to cedar-14 regardless of what the scraper's own platform file said.

Found this by triggering a real scraper (platform: heroku-24) via morph-cli and getting cedar-14's old Bundler::LockfileError instead of a heroku-24 build.

What changed

  • Extracted the platform-file-reading logic already in Scraper#platform into Morph::PlatformFile.read(repo_path).
  • Added Run#platform, which uses the associated scraper's platform when there is one, and otherwise reads the platform file straight out of run.repo_path - which already has the uploaded code unpacked into it by this point, including the platform file if the scraper has one (morph-cli uploads every file in the directory, this wasn't a client-side gap).
  • Morph::Runner#compile_and_start_run now calls run.platform instead of run.scraper&.platform.

Testing done

Specs added (spec/lib/morph/platform_file_spec.rb, plus a new #platform block in spec/models/run_spec.rb) but not executed in this session - didn't want to stand up the full docker-compose/mysql/redis/elasticsearch stack for a change this size. Traced the logic by hand against the actual source and syntax-checked every touched file. CI should be the real gate here - flagging this clearly rather than claiming it's verified when it isn't.

Opening as a draft for the same reason.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Runs without an attached scraper can now determine their platform from the uploaded code.
    • Platform configuration is read consistently, including support for legacy early_release values.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved platform selection when starting runs, including API-triggered runs without an associated scraper.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for platform-file handling, legacy platform mapping, and runs without scrapers.

'morph execute' (morph-cli) uploads code directly via ApiController#run_remote,
which creates a Run with no associated Scraper record at all - the code was
never synced from a git repo (see the existing comment at
Morph::Runner#compile_and_start_run: 'If the run is not part of a scraper
(e.g. through the api) then there won't be a git repository').

Because platform selection was 'run.scraper&.platform', every api-triggered
run silently fell through to Morph::DockerRunner::DEFAULT_PLATFORM
(cedar-14) regardless of what the scraper's own platform file said -
discovered by triggering a real scraper (platform: heroku-24) via morph-cli
and getting cedar-14's old Bundler::LockfileError instead.

The uploaded tarball already includes the scraper's platform file if it has
one (morph-cli uploads every file in the directory). Extracted the
file-reading logic shared by Scraper#platform into Morph::PlatformFile, and
added Run#platform which uses the associated scraper's platform when there
is one, falling back to reading the platform file straight out of the
already-unpacked run.repo_path when there isn't.

Specs included (Morph::PlatformFile and Run#platform) but not executed in
this session - didn't want to stand up the full docker-compose/mysql/redis/
elasticsearch stack for this. Traced the logic by hand and syntax-checked
every touched file; CI should be the real gate here.

Use let + an after hook instead of @repo_path / an around block.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change centralises platform-file reading, adds platform resolution for runs without scrapers, and passes the resolved platform to the Docker runner.

Changes

Platform resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Centralise platform-file reading
app/lib/morph/platform_file.rb, app/models/scraper.rb, spec/lib/morph/platform_file_spec.rb
Morph::PlatformFile.read reads and trims platform, maps early_release to heroku-24, and returns nil when the file is absent. Scraper#platform delegates to it.
Resolve and pass the run platform
app/models/run.rb, app/lib/morph/runner.rb, spec/models/run_spec.rb
Run#platform uses the scraper platform when available and otherwise reads the uploaded code. The runner passes this value to Morph::DockerRunner.compile_and_start_run.

An API upload containing a platform directory fails during startup and leaves the run stuck as started. This should be fixed before merge.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Handle a directory named platform.

When an API upload contains a root-level platform/ directory, ApiController#run_remote unpacks it and invokes Morph::Runner#compile_and_start_run without a scraper. The method sets started_at before run.platform calls Morph::PlatformFile.read. File.exist? accepts the directory, but File.read raises Errno::EISDIR. No rescue or normal error path handles this exception, so the request fails and the run remains started without finished_at or status_code.

Use File.file? and add a spec that creates a platform directory and expects nil.

Proposed fix
- platform = File.read(platform_file).chomp if File.exist?(platform_file)
+ platform = File.read(platform_file).chomp if File.file?(platform_file)
