Update elide: a hidden-content policy replaces the EXIF policy - #526
Moves elide from 91ec9b1 to 5dc9f39 (nvisycom/elide #332, #338, #341, #342, #343). The upstream change that matters here is #338: every codec now strips hidden content at decode, under a per-document policy.
API changes
CodecParams::exif_policy is now hidden_content. It takes a HiddenContentPolicy, which sets Strip or Redact for metadata and for collaboration content. The audit records it, so anonymize decodes the way analyze did.
is_default is now uses_default_formats. The policy is an argument to each decode rather than a setting on a format, so asking for it doesn't rebuild the registry.
Pattern recognizer:Regex is now Pattern, and build() does the context keyword boosting that build_context_enhanced() used to do.
Behaviour changes
ExifPolicy::Retain no longer exists. Metadata can be stripped or redacted, but not kept unexamined.
More is removed by default, in every format: comments, tracked changes, document properties, scripts, macros, thumbnails and external references. The audit's report now lists what was removed under stripped.
Some files are now refused: PDFs encrypted with a user password, and office files with an unrecognised part.
Custom regexes with a group named entity: only that group is now redacted, not the whole match. An optional group can miss a match entirely, so MatchOn::Pattern now documents this.
metadata: Redact depends on the format, because the runtime registers no metadata pipeline:
Metadata
Examples
Under Redact
Held as text
HTML <meta>
Kept and sent through text detection, so anything detection doesn't flag stays in the output
Surfaced field by field
EXIF, office properties
Removed and reported as Unscanned
Not included
Metadata pipeline: registering one would let Redact keep the EXIF and office properties that detection doesn't flag.
Testing
cargo test --workspace --all-features, clippy with and without all features, cargo doc, nightly fmt and cargo deny all pass locally. The Testcontainers E2E can't run here because Docker isn't running, so it relies on CI.
New tests in crates/elide-pipeline/tests/codec_params.rs run analyze and anonymize on an HTML page under both policies, on both the shared and rebuilt registry paths.
The Unscanned result for DOCX properties and nested EXIF was checked with a one-off probe, not a committed test. Upstream tests the same behaviour for JPEG EXIF.
elide now strips hidden content at decode in every format, under a
per-document HiddenContentPolicy. ExifPolicy is gone, and with it the
Retain option. CodecParams carries the new policy as hidden_content,
which the audit records so anonymize decodes as analyze did.
The policy is an argument to each decode rather than a setting on a
format, so it does not cost a registry rebuild. is_default becomes
uses_default_formats, which ignores it.
Context keyword boosting is now part of PatternRecognizer::build, and
Regex is now Pattern.

CodeRabbit blocks several paths by default. You can override this behavior by explicitly including those paths in the path filters. For example, including **/dist/** will override the default block on the dist directory, by removing the pattern from both the lists.

Walkthrough
Codec parameters replace EXIF handling with a hidden-content policy. The decode engine passes that policy through both registry paths. Tests cover policy defaults and metadata handling. Pattern recognizer construction and named-capture documentation and tests also change.
CodecParams replaces exif_policy with hidden_content and adds with_hidden_content. uses_default_formats() checks format settings only. The provider exports Disposition and HiddenContentPolicy, removes the ExifPolicy export, and drops the elide-image dependency. The changelog describes hidden-content handling.
The engine uses the shared registry when format defaults apply and otherwise builds a configured registry. Both paths pass codec.hidden_content to decoding.
Tests cover default policy values, format-override checks, and metadata stripping or redaction through HTML decoding and detection.

Custom matchers use Pattern::builder(). The built-in recognizer uses build() instead of build_context_enhanced(), and attach_pattern no longer requires the Enhanced recognizer bound. Documentation and a test describe named entity capture handling.
nvisycom/elide-runtime#515: Updates the caller-supplied matcher’s regex budget. The change is relevant to the custom matcher’s transition to Pattern::builder().

Custom patterns may leave sensitive text unredacted, and legacy audits may apply positions to differently decoded content; both risks should be resolved before merging.

Preserve full-match semantics for custom regexes.
The new recognizer treats a capture group named entity as the emitted span. Previously, custom regexes emitted the whole match. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
For (?P<entity>employee-)?\d{6}, input 123456 now produces no entity; with the prefix, only employee- is detected. Sensitive identifiers can therefore remain unredacted. Preserve whole-match behavior for existing custom matchers, or make capture-based spans opt-in.

Review comment at @crates/elide-provider/src/detect/custom.rs at line 82:
Update the custom regex recognition flow built around Pattern::builder() to emit
the whole regex match, preserving existing custom matcher behavior; if
capture-based spans must remain available, make them explicitly opt-in rather
than treating a capture named entity as the default span.

Reject legacy audits or require re-analysis before anonymization.
A pre-upgrade audit without hiddenContent receives the stripping default during deserialization. anonymize then applies the audit’s stored entity positions to a decode that may have removed hidden content. If removed content precedes an entity, the positions can shift and produce incorrect redaction. Distinguish legacy audits from audits analyzed with the stripping policy, or reject legacy audits until re-analysis completes.

Review comment at @crates/elide-provider/src/orchestrator/codec.rs at line 57:
Update deserialization of HiddenContentPolicy and the anonymize flow so legacy
audits lacking hiddenContent are distinguishable from audits analyzed with the
stripping policy; reject legacy audits until re-analysis rather than applying
stored entity positions to potentially shifted content.

…d-audit test
Since elide added capture-group spans, a custom regex with a group named
entity reports that group rather than the whole match. Say so on
MatchOn::Pattern, including that an optional group can miss a match, and
pin the narrowing in a test.
Nothing is deployed, so audits written before this update need no
handling and the test for reading them goes.
