Keep an old Desktop host's process reads inside the 1 MiB socket ceiling - #1011
Conversation
A host released before transfers ignores process.read's max_bytes and answers with up to 1 MiB of what its process kept (1.33 MiB base64'd), so a chatty command closed its link with 1009 mid-run. Its ring is bounded by the output_limit_bytes it is started with, so the link session now starts its processes with at most LINK_INLINE_DATA_BYTES kept: every read fits, and a burst past that keeps its newest output and reports the rest truncated. Current hosts are started as asked. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

bool is an int in Python; a True output_limit_bytes falls back to the inline bound like any other non-count. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

…o fix/old-host-process-output
old_host_params is one pure function, so its cases -- under, past and no limit, anything but a positive count, the rest of the start as asked, another op untouched -- live in a unit file rather than the e2e one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

process.readafterprocess.start.The test only checks the forwarded
output_limit_bytes. It does not issueprocess.read, so it cannot detect an oversized response, incorrect newest-output retention, or missingtruncated_before_sequence. Extend this case to sendprocess.readover the same workspace and link, return a response with known chunks and truncation metadata, and assert the returned chunk size, newest sequence, and truncation marker. Use an old-host execution fixture if the test must validate actual retention rather than only the relay path.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

A process buffer that drops its oldest chunks says where what is left begins (truncated_before_sequence), but the collector moved its cursor past the gap and returned the rest as if it were all of it. It now marks where output was dropped in stdout and returns output_truncated, so a caller (and the agent reading a command's output) knows part of it is missing. An old host answers process.read with a JSON object per chunk, data base64'd, and bounds what it keeps only in raw bytes: a process flushing a byte at a time made a 256 KiB ring an ~18 MB answer. The limit is now sized for that worst case -- (WS_MAX_BYTES - 4 KiB) / 72 bytes per output byte, about 14 KiB -- and a test builds that answer and checks it fits. What changes
A Mac still on a Desktop host older than #1010 no longer has its Agent Host link closed when a command prints a lot between two reads. Its processes are started with at most 256 KiB of output kept, so no
process.readanswer can pass the API's 1 MiB websocket ceiling. A burst past that keeps its newest output and reports the rest as truncated, as any full output ring does. Current hosts are unchanged. Why
The review of #1010 found the gap: an old host ignores
process.read'smax_bytesand answers with up to 1 MiB of buffered output (1.33 MiB once base64'd). The socket closed with 1009 mid-run, and the run ended without an answer. That host's output ring is bounded by theoutput_limit_bytesit is given atprocess.start(desktop/agent-host/src/host_exec/ring.rs: newest kept,truncated_before_sequencereported). So the server can bound every read without a Desktop update.old_host_paramsinagent_host_link_ops.pycapsoutput_limit_bytesatLINK_INLINE_DATA_BYTESonprocess.startfor a host that doesn't advertisetransfers.desktop-host-execution.md§4 andagent-host.md.The review's other finding (0058 edited in place) needs no change: no database has applied 0058, per the owner.
How to verify
test_an_old_hosts_process_keeps_no_more_output_than_one_message_holdsdrives a pre-transfers host and a current host through the real link and op client. It fails with the cap removed. Transfers e2e: 7 passed. Agent unit tests: 3,172 passed.make quality: 32/32.Checklist
Compatibility and rollback notes
No API, schema or wire change. It only lowers the output buffer requested from hosts that predate transfers. A plain revert is safe.
