usage_rs::completion::Completion::run writes the completion script and the --install report to one writer. The docs example passes stdout, so a tool that copies it prints installed /path and already up to date: /path on stdout. usage generate completion --install keeps stdout empty and reports on stderr, so the two paths disagreed. Pitchfork's adoption inherits the stdout behavior. Raised in #1623.

This adds Completion::run_split (and run_split_in for tests), which takes a second writer for the install report:

completion.run_split("ex", &mut std::io::stdout(), &mut std::io::stderr())?;
  • ex completion fish prints only the script on stdout, so it is safe to pipe or redirect.
  • ex completion fish --install leaves stdout empty and reports on stderr, like usage generate completion --install.

run and run_in are unchanged, because changing where they write would break a published API. The docs example now uses run_split, and V8.md records making that the behavior of run in the next major release. A new test checks that the script goes to out and the report to report.

Tested with cargo test -p usage-rs --all-features for the completion tests and doctests.

Note

Low Risk
Additive public API with unchanged run/run_in semantics; low risk beyond adopters opting into run_split.

Overview
Adds Completion::run_split / run_split_in so embedders can send the completion script to one writer (e.g. stdout) and the --install status report to another (e.g. stderr), matching usage generate completion --install and keeping piping safe.

Refactors run_in through a private render + Rendered type; run / run_in still write everything to the single out sink, so existing callers are unchanged.

Documentation: docs/rust/completions.md uses run_split in the example and explains stdout/stderr behavior; V8.md records a future breaking change: either route install reports to stderr in run or drop the single-writer form.

Tests: a unix test asserts script-only on out and report on report for run_split_in, with install still writing the file correctly.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Completion commands can write generated scripts and installation reports to separate output streams. Existing commands continue to write both kinds of output to a single writer.
    • Added options for directing script output and installation reports to separate writers.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the completion example and guidance to demonstrate separate output streams and clarify where scripts and installation reports are written.

Add Completion::run_split, which sends the --install report to its own writer so
stdout carries only the script, matching usage generate completion --install.

Walkthrough

Completion adds methods that accept separate writers for generated scripts and installation reports. Rendering returns output text with an indicator for its type. Documentation and a Unix test describe and check the split output behavior.

Check the installed file in the split-output test.

A run_split_in regression could report an installation without writing the script, and this test would still pass. Compare the installed file with the generated script.

Test run_split with --install.

The test calls only run_split_in, so it cannot detect a regression in run_split that sends the report to out. Add a test that calls run_split with separate writers in an isolated process environment and checks both outputs.

Extend the completion test that currently calls run_split_in to exercise

No instruction-count regression above 1%.

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.
