feat(lib): label the completion install flags with their effects - #1627
The shared Completion command added in usage 7.3.0 writes a file under --install and can overwrite one under --force, but its spec did not say so. Tools that audit command effects (pitchfork labels its commands read, write or destructive, and treats an unlabeled write as the dangerous mistake) had to choose between calling completion read-only and over-labeling the plain print.
The flags now carry their effects, the same flag-level model usage generate completion uses:
--install is effect = "write": it creates the script, or updates one usage generated.
--force is effect = "destructive": it replaces a file that usage did not generate, such as a hand-written completion script, with no backup, so a tool that confirms destructive commands can ask first.
mycli completion fish still prints and has no effect. A test mounts Completion in a derived CLI and checks the exported spec: --install is a write, --force is destructive, and nothing else carries an effect.
docs/cli/completions.md also now says the Rust framework's completions need no usage install and follow the installed version of the tool, and points Rust CLIs at the ready-made Completion command.
AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: unavailable.
Note
Low Risk
Spec metadata and documentation only; completion install behavior is unchanged.
Overview
The shared Rust Completion command now exports effect=write on --install and effect=destructive on --force in the generated KDL spec, matching how usage generate completion describes file writes and overwrites. Plain completion <shell> still has no effect label.
A new test mounts Completion on a sample CLI and asserts only those two flags carry effect= in the exported spec. --force’s help notes the no-backup overwrite rationale.
docs/cli/completions.md expands the Rust completions callout: no separate usage install, scripts track the installed tool version, and Rust CLIs can expose mycli completion <shell> [--install] via the built-in Completion command.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified that shell completions follow the installed tool version, require no separate installation, and support Elvish.
Documented the completion command and its options, including that --force can overwrite a non-usage file without creating a backup.
Tests
Added checks for the effects shown for completion command options.
The completion command marks install with the write effect and force with the destructive effect. A test checks the generated CLI metadata. The documentation describes completion version behavior, installation requirements, shell support, and command syntax.

Summary
Completion flags and documentation usage-rs/src/completion.rs, docs/cli/completions.md
The install argument gains the write effect. The force argument gains the destructive effect, and its documentation states that it overwrites files without a backup. A test checks the generated effects. The documentation describes following the installed tool version, not requiring a separate usage installation, supporting Elvish, and using mycli completion <shell> [--install].
jdx/usage#1624: Adds the shared Completion command and its --install and --force flags, which this change annotates with effects and documents.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a73aa
Tools that inspect command effects will treat completion --install as a recoverable write. It can still overwrite a user-edited generated completion script with no backup. Reclassify the flag as destructive, or refuse to overwrite modified files, before merging.

Mark --force as destructive.
When --install --force encounters a foreign completion file, the installer replaces that file without a backup. Effect::Write excludes irreversible removal, while Effect::Destructive covers irreversible overwrite. Mark --force as destructive and update the test expectation so tools inspecting effects do not classify this operation as a recoverable write. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If a user edits a generated completion file and keeps its marker, install::ours accepts it. --install can then overwrite the edits without a backup or --force. The write effect does not cover this loss.

… --install (#1105)
`pitchfork completion` could only print a script for bash, zsh or fish,
and the docs had you redirect it into the right directory yourself.
Tools built on usage did this differently from one another (aube has
`--install`, pitchfork did not), which is the inconsistency raised in
[usage discussion 1623](jdx/usage#1623).
pitchfork now uses the shared `Completion` command from usage-rs 7.3.0,
so it matches every other tool that mounts it.
```
pitchfork completion fish # print the script; `pitchfork completion fish | source` follows the installed version
pitchfork completion fish --install # write it where fish looks, no startup file is edited
pitchfork completion fish --install --force # also replace a file usage did not generate
```
Bash, zsh, fish, PowerShell, Elvish and Nushell are accepted (`nushell`
and `pwsh` work as spellings too). Re-running `--install` after an
upgrade is a no-op or an update; a file you wrote by hand is refused
unless you pass `--force`. `--force` without `--install` is an error.
The scripts are unchanged in kind: short, they hold no spec and ask the
installed `pitchfork` for candidates on every Tab, so they cannot go
stale across upgrades.
The runtime `__complete_word__` handling, including the async daemon-id
completer, is untouched. The docs page for installation now shows
`--install` and no longer calls the scripts self-contained, and
`docs/cli/completion.md` and `pitchfork.usage.kdl` are regenerated.
**Effect label.** `pitchfork completion` was labeled `read`. It now
writes a file under `--install`, so it is labeled `write` for the whole
command, including plain printing. usage-rs 7.3.0 does not yet mark the
flags themselves as writes
([jdx/usage#1627](jdx/usage#1627) does); once
that ships, the command could return to `read` with the flag-level
labels doing the work.
Checked by building and running: printing, `--install` into a temporary
home, refusal of a hand-written file, the `nushell` alias, and `--force`
without `--install`. The two completion unit tests pass. `Cargo.lock`
moves the usage crates from 7.2.0 to 7.3.0; no crate version in this
repo changes.

the script where the shell expects it, with **`--force`** (requires

**bash, zsh, fish, PowerShell (`powershell`/`pwsh`), Elvish, and Nushell

prints the script; execution runs synchronously on the **blocking pool**

because install touches the filesystem. Docs and generated CLI spec

redirect recipes. Custom daemon-id completion overlays and
**`__complete_word__`** handling are unchanged.

## Summary by CodeRabbit
* **New Features**
* Shell completion supports Bash, Elvish, Fish, Nu, Nushell, PowerShell,
Pwsh, and Zsh.
* Use `--install` to write a completion script to the shell’s completion
location; without it, the command prints the script.
* Installation can be rerun safely and does not edit startup files. The
command reports any required startup configuration. Use `--force` with
`--install` to replace files not generated by the tool.
* **Documentation**
* Updated command references and setup guidance to cover supported
shells, installation options, and startup configuration.
