Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added contribution guidance requiring signed commits on the default branch, using a GitHub-registered SSH key and verified committer email for people and interactive agents.
    • Clarified that apps, bots and workflows should create commits through the GitHub API or approved signed-push process.
    • Documented squash-merging as the required merge method. Unsigned commits on a pull request branch block merging; contributors are advised to recreate the branch with signed commits and open a new pull request. Rebase-merging is disabled.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide now sets out signed-commit requirements for people and automation. It explains how unsigned commits affect merging and states that contributors must squash-merge.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb02d

The documentation overstates how squash-only merging is enforced. Correct the rebase explanation; this documentation-only mismatch does not block normal squash merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb02d

The change documents signing and merge policy without changing enforcement. The guidance and checked-in merge settings disagree, and live enforcement remains unverified. No unsigned-commit bypass has been established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The mapped candidate concerns contribution commits reaching this repository's default branch. Effective exposure depends on deployed merge permissions and signature controls; exposure across downstream repositories is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The security candidate remains deferred, with no retained finding. Whether the settings are applied and whether active rules prevent unsigned rebase results is unavailable. Enabled rebase merging alone does not establish an unsigned-commit bypass or a PR-introduced weakening.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The main-branch configuration requires signatures, one approving review, code-owner review, strict named status checks, and administrator enforcement. It dismisses stale reviews and disables force pushes and deletions. These are declared controls, not verified deployed protections.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Recovery instructions route replacement signed commits through a new PR rather than document an exception to signing. The reviewed change adds no recovery automation or approval-transfer mechanism. Effective review, check, and signature enforcement during interrupted or repeated recovery remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Reconcile the guidance and checked-in configuration with authoritative deployed settings before treating squash-only merging and verification of every PR commit as enforced guarantees.

A rabbit checks each commit’s mark,
Then signs its work before the dark.
It picks signed commits for the line,
And squash-merges them neat and fine.
The guide is clear; the burrow’s set,
No unsigned hops to trip the net.

## Signed commits

Every commit that reaches the default branch must be signed; a ruleset refuses
unsigned pushes. Estate policy:

- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub

`commit.gpgsign=true`). The committer email must be verified on that account.
- **Apps, bots and workflows** never `git push` local commits. They write
through the API (`createCommitOnBranch` or the estate `signed-push` action)
so that GitHub signs each commit.
- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

🌐 Web query:

site:docs.github.com required signed commits rebase and merge branch protection

💡 Result:

GitHub’s docs say **Rebase and merge can conflict with a branch’s “Require signed commits” protection**: GitHub adds the head-branch commits to the base branch **without verifying their signatures**. If the destination branch requires signed commits, those commits may therefore fail the protection check. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/about-commit-signature-verification?apiVersion=2022-11-28&utm_source=openai))

GitHub’s branch-protection guidance says commits pushed to a protected branch must be signed and verified; unsigned commits may need to be rewritten and signed. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-protected-branches/about-protected-branches?ref=the-mergify-blog&utm_source=openai))

**Practical takeaway:** don’t assume enabling signed commits makes GitHub’s rebase-and-merge flow sign or verify the rebased commits. The docs establish the lack of signature verification during that merge method; they don’t, in the excerpts found, spell out every resulting UI or blocking behavior for each repository configuration. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/about-commit-signature-verification?apiVersion=2022-11-28&utm_source=openai))

Describe rebase merging as restricted, not disabled

.github/settings.yml enables rebase merging. Branch protection requires signed commits, and GitHub documents that rebase-and-merge does not verify the head-branch signatures. The operation may therefore fail protection, but the repository setting does not disable it.

Suggested fix
- Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.
+ Rebase-merge does not verify head-branch commit signatures and may fail the
+ required-signatures protection. Use squash merge to follow this policy.
