refactor(api): move settings from option structs to context parameters - #546
Replaces zxc_compress_opts_t / zxc_decompress_opts_t with per-parameter setters on zxc_cctx / zxc_dctx.
Why: option structs were part of the ABI, so adding a field changed their layout. Parameters are appendable enum identifiers. Every entry point, one-shot zxc_compress() included, refuses out-of-range values instead of clamping them.
API
zxc_{c,d}ctx_set_param / _get_param, with bounds from zxc_{c,d}param_bounds(); 0 restores the default.
zxc_{c,d}ctx_set_dict copies the dictionary, so the caller can free it right after the call. Also _set_progress and _reset.
zxc_compress(src, size, dst, cap, level). zxc_decompress() and zxc_decompress_inplace() take no options: no checksum and no dictionary without a configured context.
Streams take a const context. zxc_create_{c,d}ctx(void).
Removed: the opts structs and zxc_{compress,decompress}_opts_size().
Other:
All bindings migrated, with dictionary pinning dropped.
--bench now logs its errors.
docs/MIGRATION.md is the full migration guide.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Reusable compression and decompression contexts support configurable parameters, dictionaries, checksums, and progress callbacks. Settings can be queried, reset, and reused across buffer, block, and streaming operations.
Go, Node.js, Python, Rust, and WebAssembly bindings support context-based configuration and parameter errors.
Go and Rust file operations preserve existing output files when processing fails.
Updates
One-shot compression accepts a level directly; 0 selects the default, and unsupported levels are rejected.
Simple decompression does not verify checksums or support dictionaries; use a configured context for these options.
The C API has breaking changes. See the migration guide for updated usage.
This pull request replaces options-struct configuration with persistent compression and decompression contexts. It updates the C API, internal implementation, streaming paths, static contexts, CLI, tests, documentation, and Go, Node.js, Python, Rust, and WASM bindings.
Changes: Context-based API migration

Summary
Public API and parameter contracts include/*, src/lib/zxc_dispatch.c, docs/*
One-shot calls use simplified signatures. Contexts expose parameter setters, getters, bounds queries, dictionary and progress setters, and reset operations. Setters reject invalid values.
Core implementation and streaming integration src/lib/*, src/cli/main.c, contrib/*, cmake/*
Context parameters replace per-call options. Stream and push APIs use contexts as configuration. Static compression contexts receive explicit block-size and level arguments.
Bindings and validation wrappers/*, tests/*, conformance/*
Bindings and tests configure contexts through setters. Coverage includes parameter validation, checksum and dictionary behavior, reset behavior, and context reuse. Go and Rust file APIs also manage regular-file output through temporary files and commit on success.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 10956
The change is mergeable with minor follow-ups. The Go and Rust file helpers now need a writable output directory and can fail where they previously succeeded. The benchmark job builds an unpinned external branch. One source comment in the C library still describes level clamping that the code no longer performs.

Free the contexts and buffers on the setter-failure paths.
In the buffer example, Lines 63-67 return 1 after a setter refusal. At that point, cctx, dctx, compressed and decompressed are all allocated, and none of them is freed. In the reusable-context example, Lines 288-292 return 1 without freeing cctx or dctx.
The other error paths in these programs clean up before they return. Readers copy these programs, and the new setter checks are the code that teaches error handling for the context API. Use the same cleanup sequence as the neighbouring error paths.

Pin the lzbench source to an immutable commit.
This step builds code from the mutable zxc-ctx-params branch. A branch update can change benchmark behavior without a change to this repository, which reduces reproducibility and increases CI supply-chain risk. Fetch and check out a reviewed commit SHA.

Fix the stale comment on zxc_compress: it says out-of-range levels are clamped.
The code at Lines 2120-2121 returns ZXC_ERROR_BAD_LEVEL for any nonzero level outside 1 to 7. include/zxc_buffer.h documents the same refusal. The comment still describes the removed clamping behavior and will mislead maintainers.

Write in place when the temporary file cannot be created in the output directory.
Before this change, os.Create(output) needed write permission on the output file only. Now createOutput needs to create a sibling file with O_EXCL in the output's directory. If the output is writable but its directory is not, CompressFile and DecompressFile now fail where they succeeded before. This matches the Rust Output::create regression. If os.OpenFile(tmp, ...) fails with os.ErrPermission and the output already exists as a regular file, open the output with os.O_WRONLY|os.O_TRUNC. Then return &outputFile{File: f} with an empty final.
🐛 Proposed fallback

Write in place when the temporary file cannot be created in the output directory.
Before this change, File::create(output) needed write permission on the output file only. Now Output::create needs to create a sibling file with create_new in the output's directory. Example: the output is a writable file in a directory that the process cannot write to, such as a shared log or spool directory. In that case, compress_file and decompress_file now fail with PermissionDenied where they succeeded before. The existing output was already opened for writing at line 41. If temporary-file creation fails with PermissionDenied, keep that handle, truncate it, and write in place with pending: None. The atomic replacement remains the normal path.

One-shot compress() clamped invalid levels while contexts and streams refused them, an inconsistent API. Make every entry point refuse via ERROR_BAD_LEVEL; update wrappers, docs, and tests accordingly.

Document the dict API renames, size_t bounds and zxc_version_number() left out of the previous ABI-break commit, refresh the site's quickstart example for the context-based params API, and clarify that param bounds don't cover the block-size power-of-two constraint.
Also fix fuzz_dict.c: persistent cctx/dctx kept dictionary pointers into freed fuzzer input across iterations; clear them after each use.

conformance and golden tests each had their own vc_recipe_t/gc_recipe_t types with identical logic.

Leftover call sites still used the old opts-based signatures (NULL/0 args, int64_t vs size_t comparisons). Update them to match the per-context param API, and have cparams_resolve compute level/block-size defaults directly instead of via the removed opts macros.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Make the one-shot zxc_compress() refuse out-of-range levels with ZXC_ERROR_BAD_LEVEL instead of silently clamping them, matching zxc_cctx_set_param() behavior. Drop the now-unused zxc_level_clamp() helper, update docs/tests accordingly.
Also hardens the Go/Rust file pipelines: probe the existing output before creating the temp file and use a pid+counter suffix instead of a random one for atomic replacement.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Benchmark setup and I/O failures previously failed silently via bare `goto bench_cleanup`, giving no clue why `--bench` aborted. Add zxc_log() messages for each failure path.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Simple API now builds stack-allocated contexts directly instead of routing through the now-redundant *_params wrappers left over from the SOVERSION 6 context refactor.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Temp-file creation can fail with permission denied in directories that refuse new entries but allow writes to existing files. Fall back to truncating the output in place instead of failing the whole pipeline.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Dict size, block size, and level checks now live solely in the param setters, so compress/decompress paths no longer re-validate options already enforced at context configuration time. Also updates wasm/rust wrapper docs and tests to match the stricter
setter-based error reporting.
Signed-off-by: Bertrand Lebonnois <[email protected]>
Context dict setters now copy content and table instead of keeping caller pointers, so buffers can be freed right after the call. Simplifies Go/Rust/Node/Python/WASM wrappers by dropping pinning/borrowing workarounds.
Adds ZXC_ERROR_MEMORY for failed copies; refused calls keep the prior dictionary.
