Closes #138

What

  • wire.Manifest reads menu as []MenuEntry, and screens and screen_capabilities. They no longer sit in Extra.
  • Run refuses a menu entry with no label, screen or capability, a screen name that is not one path segment, two menu entries that ask different capabilities for one screen, an empty screen capability, and a screen capability for a screen a menu entry already names, since that screen takes the entry's capability. A null counts as leaving a key out, as for every other key.
  • Config.TSScreensPath, when set, writes a TypeScript map from each plugin id to a dynamic import() of its screens module, in wiring order, and an empty map when no plugin names one. Its strings are written as JSON string literals, so any address reads back as the manifest wrote it.
  • With PackageJSONPath set, the package a screens module names joins the workspace dependencies. A screens value that names no package, such as ./screens, is refused before any file is written.
  • screens does not count toward the backend-or-frontend rule, and frontend keeps its meaning, so a plugin can carry both while it moves.
  • The behaviour is written as scenarios in pluginkit/features/screens.feature.

Why

A downstream application's admin draws its menu from up to 200 plugins and should download a plugin's screens only when one of them opens. Every screen must name the capability it needs, a screen opened from a button included, so the admin can show no access on a screen that names none.

Testing

  • go test -race -shuffle=on passes for pluginkit and pluginkit/wire, and coverage stays at 100% in both. One new case covers a package.json parse error no test reached before.
  • 30 scenarios with 141 steps pass in screens.feature, beside the 17 hook scenarios, 20 times in a row under -race. Breaking each new check on purpose fails the scenarios that describe it.
  • Mutation testing killed all 29 mutants on the changed lines of wire.
  • The byte-identity tests pass with their expected values unchanged. The full manifest fixture and its index golden file change, since menu and screens moved from Extra into typed fields.
  • A generated map with odd characters in its addresses, and an empty one, pass tsc --strict.
  • CodeScene scores 10.0 on the changed wire files except wire.go, which keeps its earlier 8.74. The new steps file scores 9.38, since godog hands every captured word to a step as a string.

Walkthrough

The change adds typed menu and screen fields with validation to plugin manifests. It adds optional TypeScript lazy-screen map generation, includes screens-module packages in workspace dependency synchronization, and updates manifest index output. Feature scenarios and unit tests cover parsing, generation, validation, and package handling.

Changes: Manifest Screens and Lazy Wiring

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typed manifest fields and validation
pluginkit/wire/manifest.go, pluginkit/wire/manifest_test.go, pluginkit/wire/manifest_identity_test.go, pluginkit/wire/manifest_index_test.go, pluginkit/features/screens.feature, pluginkit/features/steps_screens_test.go, pluginkit/features/features_test.go, pluginkit/CHANGELOG.md
Manifest now types menu entries, screens-module paths, and screen capabilities. Validation checks required values, path segments, and conflicting capability declarations. The manifest index includes the new fields.
Lazy screen-map generation
pluginkit/wire/wire.go, pluginkit/wire/screens_test.go, pluginkit/features/screens.feature, pluginkit/features/steps_screens_test.go
When TSScreensPath is set, wiring generates a TypeScript map of lazy imports for manifests with screens modules. The map preserves manifest order and is empty when no module is named.
Screens-module workspace dependencies
pluginkit/wire/packagejson.go, pluginkit/wire/packagejson_test.go, pluginkit/features/screens.feature, pluginkit/features/steps_screens_test.go
Package synchronization now includes validated package names derived from screens-module addresses. Invalid names return an error, and tests check that failed wiring leaves prior outputs unchanged.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 1abf0

The change adds typed menu and screens manifest fields with validation and optional lazy screen wiring. Existing manifests with partial menu entries will now be rejected, and code reading Extra["menu"] will stop finding the key, so the upgrade note should say so. Otherwise the change looks ready to merge.

Explanation

[#138] Typed fields, screen validation, lazy imports, dependency retention, index output, byte-identity tests, and Gherkin scenarios support the main objectives. However, parseManifest uses encoding/json to decode MenuEntry. It accepts null for optional parent, icon, and position, although those fields must be strings or an integer when present.

Resolution

Reject wrong JSON types, including null, for present menu entry fields. Add automated tests for these cases.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the previous finding is fixed and no new actionable issues remain.

Summary

Adds typed menu and screen fields, optional lazy TypeScript imports, and workspace dependencies for screen packages.

  • Plugin manifests describe menu entries and screen permissions as typed data.
  • The generated screens map loads each plugin's screen module on demand.
  • Screen modules add their package to configured workspace dependencies.

Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Flag the new validation as a breaking change for existing manifests.

Before this change, menu stayed raw in Extra and Run did not check its shape. The previous fullIndex fixture held a menu entry with only a label. Any application with manifests like that now fails wire.Run with menu[0]: screen is required or menu[0]: capability is required.

Code that reads Extra["menu"] also stops finding the key. Both effects need an explicit upgrade note. The 0.9.0 entry already states that Run refuses a wrong shape, so the Unreleased entry should match that clarity.
