Editor Meta Box Tabs turns classic WordPress editor meta boxes into a compact, accessible tab bar above the editor. It is especially useful for complex custom post types with many fields and settings.
- Places editor meta boxes in a clearly labeled button bar above the classic editor.
- Leaves Publish and Categories in their standard locations.
- Displays one meta box at a time, with every box hidden initially.
- Lets users click the active button again to hide all meta boxes.
- Uses WordPress's native behavior to expand collapsed meta boxes.
- Supports keyboard navigation and reduced-motion preferences.
- Works with posts, pages, and custom post types.
- Download
24moves-editor-meta-box-tabs.zipfrom the latest GitHub release. - In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin.
- Select the ZIP, install it, and activate Editor Meta Box Tabs.
Alternatively, copy the 24moves-editor-meta-box-tabs directory into wp-content/plugins/ and activate it from the Plugins screen.
Limit the plugin to selected post types:
add_filter(
'moves24_embt_enabled_post_types',
function () {
return array( 'page', 'your_custom_post_type' );
}
);Add another meta box to the default exclusion list:
add_filter(
'moves24_embt_excluded_meta_box_ids',
function ( $excluded_ids ) {
$excluded_ids[] = 'postimagediv';
return $excluded_ids;
}
);Returning an empty array from moves24_embt_enabled_post_types enables the plugin for every post type. Publish (submitdiv) and Categories (categorydiv) are excluded by default.
